I love the experience and the service was good they are kind and helpful. Their food selection is wonderful and delicious.

I've been seeing Southern Roots pop up on Instagram for a while, and it always looked cute and delicious, but I hadn't been able to make it work until now. On my most recent trip to South Texas, I made it a point to finally check it out and I'm so glad I did. The space itself is beautiful. It has a very aesthetic, thoughtfully designed look with plenty of photo-worthy opps, including a charming old-style phone booth that's impossible to ignore. The food really hit the spot too. We started with the queso topped with pork belly, which was decadent and incredibly flavorful. The addition of pineapple was a great touch, adding just the right hint of sweetness to balance everything out. I also had the Texas chicken and waffles. The waffle was perfectly shaped like the state of Texas, and the chicken strips were crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and just plain excellent. Add in good butter and solid execution, and it was a standout dish. One of the fun surprises was that Southern Roots isn't just a restaurant. There's also a small vintage shop where I managed to knock out some last-minute Christmas shopping, plus a cute flower shop on site. Food, shopping, and flowers all in one stop? Came back with the girls for another brunch date! Here's our food! Everything was delicious. Accommodations were great and our server Chris was very attentive. They had accidentally messed up my coffee from iced to hot but I wasn't going to send it back but Chris corrected the order immediately and brought out the iced coffee. We recently visited Southern Roots for brunch and had a very pleasant experience. I ordered the Chilaquiles and found the flavor to be really good the sauce was good. However, I personally prefer my chilaquiles to be crunchy, and unfortunately, the tortilla chips were a bit too soggy for my liking. I also would have enjoyed the dish to be a little spicier, but that didn't detract from the good overall flavor. I would definitely order this dish again, but I'll be sure to ask for the sauce on the side next time to keep the chips crispy. My husband ordered the Catfish and Shrimp Platter, and it was a huge portion! He said it had great flavor and was very satisfying. The service was attentive and prompt, and we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere since it wasn't too crowded (we went on a Sunday after Church 1pm). They also had live music, which was a nice surprise not sure if that's an every-Sunday thing, but it added a lovely vibe. I've always been a fan of Southern Roots and have consistently received quality service, helpful advice, and a beautifully curated SMALL selection in their flower cooler. However, my experience on Valentine's Day 2025 left me shocked. The pricing felt like blatant price gouging. As shown in the pictures I took, the flower selection was priced unusually high--one bouquet was even listed at $500. On their more affordable bucket, a small selection (one peony and two filler plants) was priced at $23. I can find fuller, more reasonably priced arrangements at other local floral shops and even H-E-B. I understand that flowers can be expensive, and I don't mind paying for quality. However, it's disappointing to see Southern Roots take advantage of Valentine's Day demand, especially given the current economic climate. With their brunch prices already on the high end in their second location, it seems the shop may now be overrated. I'd recommend checking out other local florists for better value. read more
