This company deserves 0 stars. We recently moved from tyler to chapel hill two years ago and switched from tyler water utilities to southern utilities and they are a flipping joke! I never get my bill and they don't even have a way to pay online or draft from bank. They are super rude over the phone and no help. Ive thought about selling my home and moving back to tyler just because of them. lol Im so over this water company. I guess we will just switch companies.....oh wait! YOU CANT! ugh! This company is garbage, we are new to the area and was not aware of us having to go and pay a deposit until a few days before they cut our water off I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old I was not home when the put the lock on my meter, I went to setup new service the next day and still have to wait another day until these people come out and turn our water on, this company has to do better, I will be reporting them to the BBB, smh!!! read more

I recognize my comments will accomplish nothing more than allowing me to express my amazement that an executive of a company could speak in the way the President of this utility did this morning. Back story: I have multiple accounts with this water company, all of which have an excellent payment history. My main service has been in use for 25 plus years. Last summer my Mother-in-Law moved out of the home we provided her and we had paid for water service for approximately ten years. We decided to rent the house, which turned out to be a bad decision. The property was somewhat trashed and the water and electricity disconnected. I contacted the electric service and they advised me they would be out tomorrow to do a reading on the prior service and connect back in our name. SIMPLE. I call Southern Utilities and was advised that they would waive any deposit due to our long standing good pay history. They could handle in one business day and charge $30 reconnect, understandably. However, I must come to their office and sign a contract. I told her that I have a husband at home with Multiple Sclerosis and babysit a three year old granddaughter so this was not all that easy for me, without making special arrangements. She offered the alternative of emailing or mailing through postal service the contract, however it must be notarized and returned prior to their being able to connect service, which was really no better. I agreed my personal problems were mine, however was there not someone empowered to waive the signature being needed prior to reconnection due to my multiple services and excellent payment history. She could not and offered her supervisor. She explained same requirements, empathized with me and referred me to their company President. I called him and of course had to go through all of the above to his assistant before he would take my call. Well here is how it went: I asked if he had been explained the details of my situation which he acknowledged he had. I commented that surely he could override my signature in advance due to my being a long time, good paying customer. He said he could not. I commented that they are a very difficult company to deal with. Much to my surprise, I must have hit a nerve and was shocked that a company executive would respond as he did. He said "I would have helped you, but since you are complaining about my company, I'm choosing not to". Now this was after we had only discussed my request for less than a minute. There had certainly been no bickering back and forth....just my one comment on the difficulty in doing business with this company.This was certainly not a remark I would have ever expected and I commented that I would hardly expect him to say such a thing as if this was personal rather than a business.... He said "If you would shut up and listen to me because I am the President of this company" at which point I teared up and asked what alternative I had and he said the PUC and hung up on me. I could not believe what I had heard from this man representing a company. A couple of minutes later he called back and verified I was the person he had talked with. He asked if I had an email and I affirmed I do. He said the same thing the initial representative told me as far as the need to be notarized and returned before any action could be taken. I said well that puts me right back where I was. He said "Oh here we go again". I told him I had never had a representative of a business appear more personal than professional and that the previous representatives of his company had been very courteous to which he said "I bet you didn't talk to them like you did to me". I asked why he hung up on me and he stuttered and then said he was changing to speakerphone and we got cut off. I commented that most times something like that happens you begin your conversation saying sorry we got cut off....this is of no importance, I am just saying how strange this conversation went. I regretfully did say "I hope you attended church yesterday", which was totally uncalled for on my part. He said "GOOD BYE!" NOTHING can be done about the way this company is run, so I am just sounding off. They are not breaking any rules, but they do not bend any either. Even large companies take factors into consideration. I certainly hope there will be no repercussions from my comments. Anyone that has dealt with this person has had to have experienced some of this behavior, as no one could respond as unprofessionally without generally being "just this way". we have been dealing with this farce of a company for many years...this is the worst company to deal with...they actually turned off my water with my check for payment right there on their desk...I was still forced to pay all the reconnect fees...these people are pirates plain and simple...if we had ANY other option for water we would use it. read more

What in the world is going on? In one month my bill went up four times the amount that it normally is. I do not have a pool and I stopped watering my yard a month earlier. The real crazy thing is another customer had the exact same increase to the amount of usage and money and he doesn't have a sprinkler system or a pool either. Other neighbors have also said that their bill has quadrupled as well. If you call their office they just tell you to pay the bill or they will shut off your water and that is that. Let's just say, it seems they just choose a random usage amount for billing, surcharges upon surcharges, shoddy customer service, lack of technology, the list is endless. Stay away from this utility company. They installed a new water meter incorrectly (at a slant) in October 2012, which caused binding that built pressure making me have a leak. I had to spend $168 for a plumber to come fix their error. They have the most incompentent technicians and indifferent customer service. read more

This company is awful when it comes to customer service! The employees are rude when you go to pay a bill. They barely acknowledge you when you get there and are unfriendly when you pay. The times I've needed service of any kind they take forever to come fix the issues. They tell you they will arrive on a certain date/time and they don't show up when they said they would. This company is absolutely ridiculous!! When I tried to sign up for auto draft with a check it was some how denied, even though its a working account. They didn't bother telling us until I had a double payment due with a disconnect fee. After paying this bill and having them waive the fee, they told me to bring in another check. Low and behold the payment wasn't taken out of my account again. When we called they said because it was denied once they couldn't use that account. Then why did you tell me to bring another check in??!! Serious lack of communication... very frustrating!! Sucks there is no other option for the Flint area I live in!! read more

I am the owner of a rental in Tyler. I live in California. The hoops these idiots make ME go through so that my tenant can have THEIR service is unbelievable. I will have to go through this EVERY TIME I get a new tenant. They can't have me sign a waiver to release the property to anyone with a lease because " that's not how we do things". I will sell the house before I go through this again! BTW, my last tenants had no problem getting service WITHOUT my signature. Can anyone guess why I live in Ca. and not Tx.? read more

These people are out of control. Their rates are ridiculous. We are going to dig a well not because we want to but because we have to. Who can pay $200 and $300 water bills for 2 people. We did have a plumber check for leaks. There was one small one that only reduced our bill a few dollars the next month. Still over $200. The retired couple next door paid $310. This is one of the most poorly run businesses I have ever done business with. We were trying to pay our bill and it was near cut off day. The day before our car broke down and though we had the money, we had no way to get there to pay the bill. The original call was to make sure they have a night drop(Which they do not) There is only one location in which to pay the bill and it can only be paid with cash or check. They refused to give us even until noon the next day. After speaking to 3 people that incidently were all rude and sarcastic, we were given the number to contact the general manager. He was just as rude as the others and told us to get there any way we could during their business hours but before 7:30 the next morning or the water would be disconnected. If that happened it would take up to 3 days for reconnect THREE DAYS is rediculous. I did a little research on the company and they are not even a member of the BBB. I would rate this company as low as possible and if it were not for them having a monopoly on this area I would NEVER do business with them. read more

this is what happened to me. i had surgery on my foot on feb. 10th i moved in with relative in louisville for recovery we shut the water off at valve under my trailer april 7th t was able to come back to check my trailer and noticed the leak we shut the water off at the meter . i am disabled at the present time and trying to get back to work . the water bill was 3 dollars shy $1900 i ask if they could reduce the bill a little , give my a little credit i was a customer for 31 years. now i am making payment of want i can $5.00 a month read more
