Took my 15 year old cat to Dr. Gerhart in Ocala today. What a big mistake!!! I've never imagined that a Veterinarian could treat a customer or their cat so badly. He must have left gauze in my cats mouth when I had teeth cleaned and pulled 2 weeks ago. He told me that my cat would continue to bleed and not to worry. Today I finally had enough of the bleeding and made an emergency appointment for him. I saw him pull the gauze out of his mouth and blood went everywhere!!! He practically threw my cat at me after he told me the reason for the bleeding was because he needed to pull another tooth that was scraping against his gums. Why in the hell did he not pull that tooth when I paid him over $150 2 weeks ago. I am FURIOUS and intend to report him to the Veterinarian Association as soon as I figure out who to call!!!

I visited this veterinary hospital several times for my cats' check ups. Each time, I felt my cats, Maple and Mango, received excellent care. One instance, Mango got sick, and had stopped eating. I had no idea what was wrong. Dr. Gerhart was insightful with his diagnosis. He noticed Mango's tongue was swollen, and suggested he may have gone into something, and licked something toxic. The medicine he prescribed to Mango cured him quicker than I had expected. I noticed a difference in Mango within 30 minutes, as a matter of fact. Mango says Meow Meow! Translation: Thanks for healing me Dr. Gerhart!

I never had any complaint about Dr. McCall. Dr. Johnson on the other hand - STAY AWAY!!!!! NEVER bring your dog there for their dental cleaning!!! All I'm gonna say is I brought my darling Izzy in for dental in Sept 2025. She came home in terrible condition! She couldn't eat, she could barely stand or walk and they had no hours when I could bring her back in because I work 8-4:30 and so do they. When I kept calling there and expressing my being upset, they tried to turn it on me that it's MY fault because I didn't bring her back after her surgery. How could I when I work???? I kept bringing her to the emergency animal hospital on 40. Their after care is pathetic. It cost me $1800 to basically kill my little girl. She ended up passing away in my arms the following week - After multiple visits to the emergency Vet. NEVER let Dr. Johnson do dental on your dog! Go to Marion County Humane Society clinic. They are 1/3 the cost, they do the bloodwork the morning of surgery so there is NO QUESTION that your dog can be safely put under anesthesia. The Vet there as well as the team were outstanding. My new rescue came home after surgery and the first thing he wanted to do was eat! What a difference. Save your heart from breaking and avoid this place. Again, my condolences to Dr. McCall because I really liked her, but she was also a disappointment in the end because she never reached out to me during this fiasco.

He did not hesitate and quickly administered a full transfusion from his own personal canine to mine. This absolutely saved her life and I continue to be grateful for his job well done. Since then another one of my furry friends has periodically seen Dr. Nelson. When he handles this small canine he does so ever so gently & tenderly. On occasion he has even cradled her. You can see the passion in his eyes. Giving an exam means a full & total exam like I have never seen from any other clinic. Though their pricing is slightly higher than some others it is worth it to know they're receiving the best care possible. I would highly recommend this long time clinic to anyone.

We explained everything that had happened and provided the veterinary team with all the details about his condition. When we arrived, my dog was able to walk normally, including from the parking lot into the clinic. After examining him, the veterinary team gave him an injection for pain relief. They then told us they wanted to sedate him because he was difficult to keep still during a spinal examination and X-rays. We also informed them that our dog had consumed a large amount of water before the examination. We were instructed to return around 4:00 p.m. to pick him up. When we returned, our dog's condition had changed dramatically. He was completely paralyzed, and his eyes were severely swollen and bright red. I immediately asked the veterinary assistant why he looked like that. I was told that he had become stressed during the sedation and X-ray process. The following morning, at approximately 9:00 a.m., we returned to the clinic and asked to speak with Dr. Southwell. He also questioned why our dog's eyes were so red, even though I had already raised that concern. He administered fluids and a Diazepam injection before sending us home. Around 11:00 p.m. that same night, our dog's condition continued to worsen, so we rushed him to the University of Florida Emergency Veterinary Hospital. The emergency veterinarian examined him and expressed serious concern about his neurological condition. What I cannot understand is why CareVet at Skylark never informed us that something serious may have occurred during the sedation or recovery process, or that his condition required immediate emergency neurological evaluation. Instead, we only learned how critical his condition was after taking him to another veterinary hospital. Those first hours were incredibly important, and I will always wonder whether earlier recognition, communication, and referral could have made a difference. My dog walked into the clinic that morning. He left the same day completely paralyzed and fighting for his life. Despite every effort by the emergency team to save him, he passed away in the early morning of July 18, 2026. My French Bulldog was only 2 years and 9 months old. He had never been seriously ill and was always a happy, loving, and playful dog. He brought so much joy to our lives, and we are heartbroken by his loss. This was one of the most painful experiences my family has ever endured. Based on what we experienced, I cannot recommend this clinic. I hope no other family has to go through what we did. Rest in peace, my little angel. You will always be loved, forever missed, and never forgotten.

Nine months ago, we were told to take our dog, Walker, home and enjoy our last week with him…read more It all started with diarrhea, soft stools, and gradual weight loss. At first, our local veterinarian thought he had low protein. Then he was treated with antibiotics. By the time Walker was finally diagnosed with pythiosis in his GI tract, we were told his case was terminal and that there was nothing more that could be done. We were absolutely devastated. Then our neighbor did some research and came across the incredible work of Dr. Justin Walton at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. That research changed everything. Dr. Walton and the entire UF Veterinary team gave us something we thought we had lost--hope. Their expertise, compassion, and willingness to fight for Walker saved his life. Today, nine months later, Walker is pythium-free, off all of his medications, healthy, happy, and back to being himself. What once felt impossible has become our reality. There are no words to express how grateful we are to Dr. Walton and every member of the UF team. Thank you for dedicating your lives to advancing veterinary medicine, for never giving up on dogs like Walker, and for giving our family so much more time with our best friend. If your pet has been diagnosed with pythiosis, don't lose hope. Seek a second opinion and learn about the work being done at UF. Walker is living proof that there can be hope, even when the prognosis seems impossible. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Dr. Walton and the entire UF Veterinary team. You gave Walker--and our family--a second chance.
