Dr Charles Gerhart, and his daughter Dr Laura Gerhart, are an amazing team. Yes the office is a bit on the older side but a few things... the staff is all wonderful, because it isn't a fancy modern office the prices are affordable, and they are down to earth vets that actually care about your pet. They are compassionate and talk to you in a way you can understand them. They do not ever rush you and take the time to answer all of your questions. I also appreciate that they really try to accommodate you and get you in quickly if it's necessary. I would highly recommend them for good old fashioned pet care. read more

I have been going to dr gerheart for 15 years and was very satisfied. My cat 5 years old had lost a lot of weight so i took her in October, Dr Gerheart said to bring her back if she continues to lose weight as he did a physical and could not see anything wrong. In November i brought her back as she had a cyst on her neck. DR Gerhart scheduled an appointment for the next week to have the cyst removed but miraculously it went away I brought my cat back 3rd time as she still was not doing good. Dr LAURA Gerhart ordered blood work insisting it was a thyroid condition The next day she called me to ask for another 100 To test for another condition thinking my cat had addisons disease (rare) so I decided to go to a new vet. The new vet did a radiograph and told me that my cat either has stomach cancer or swallowed something that is lodged in her stomach. 3 months and my cat will finally be diagnosed tomorrow with one more test. Brought my recently adopted 3 year old kitty for a checkup and updated vaccinations. The only thing that could be improved upon is better communication. I got there at 8:45, I had to ask the receptionist at 9:20 if the doctor was running late as my appointment was at 9:00 and she answers me "it looks that way"". Good customer service goes along way , so how about saying at 9:00 when you know the doctor is not there yet, just do you know the doctor is running 20 min late or better yet how about call the doc on their cell phone and ask. Everyone has schedules and circumstances do come up periodically but a good support staff is essential in running a business. I do think Dr Laura Gerhardt is a caring compassionate vet. read more

I just moved to the area but my Mom has used this vet for the last 14 years. The staff and Doctor were wonderful. I'm not sure what the previous poor reviews were about! They scared me! I'm so glad I took my cat Clyde anyway! I learned a lot and the Dr took all the time he needed to examine and explain Clyde's eye problem. Good vet. I'm using them for all my fur babies! Our pets have been cared for by Dr. Charles Gerhardt for many years. His daughter has joined the practice and the service and care she provides is nothing like her father. She is arrogant, rude to customers, and does not relate well to our pets, or from what I can see while waiting, any pet owners. This is one of the most depressing places I have ever taken my pet to. There is one tech who is very nice, but most of the people who work there seem unhappy and do not seem to believe in friendly customer service. The first suggestion was to put my cat down, but thankfully I knew better, and I am also thankful that they were willing to prescribe some medication that might help what they suspected was wrong without insisting on putting him through a lot of tests that probably would have killed him, because he is so terrified of being at the vet. He is doing well now, and it has been 3 weeks since his appointment. Besides the depressing atmosphere, the other thing that leads to my two-star review is that they would not allow me to get refills on the medication through another source unless I paid them a fee to sign the prescription over. I went in and paid the fee, and they said the Dr. signed the release, but it has now been two days and they still have not sent in the release so I can get the refill that is needed in a couple of days. Took my 15 year old cat to Dr. Gerhart in Ocala today. What a big mistake!!! I've never imagined that a Veterinarian could treat a customer or their cat so badly. He must have left gauze in my cats mouth when I had teeth cleaned and pulled 2 weeks ago. He told me that my cat would continue to bleed and not to worry. Today I finally had enough of the bleeding and made an emergency appointment for him. I saw him pull the gauze out of his mouth and blood went everywhere!!! He practically threw my cat at me after he told me the reason for the bleeding was because he needed to pull another tooth that was scraping against his gums. Why in the hell did he not pull that tooth when I paid him over $150 2 weeks ago. I am FURIOUS and intend to report him to the Veterinarian Association as soon as I figure out who to call!!! read more

Today i took a kitten i found to southwest Ocala animal hospital to get it help. I didn't plan on keeping him and couldn't afford to pay a lot for his bill but i had an organization that was willing to help with some of it. I was told he had to have a rabies shot or they couldn't see him and it would be $25. I couldn't afford to pay that and the rest of his bill and said so. The vet their then laid into me about how i shouldn't have or take care of any animals if i can't afford to pay their bills. How im such a horrible pet owner and don't deserve to have any pets cause im too poor. Keep in mind that this was a stray kitten i was trying to find the owner for but didn't want him to be injured and suffer until i found them. So i was basically fostering him and couldn't afford to pay too much. He kept berating me like im such a horrible person to the point i broke down crying. I repeatedly told him i was not his owner and just fostering him till i found his owner but he didnt care. Please dont use this clinic as he is very rude and nasty for no reason. Even his staff said he is always like that. I ended up having to surrender the kitten to the humane society so he could get the care he needed. read more

I visited this veterinary hospital several times for my cats' check ups. Each time, I felt my cats, Maple and Mango, received excellent care. One instance, Mango got sick, and had stopped eating. I had no idea what was wrong. Dr. Gerhart was insightful with his diagnosis. He noticed Mango's tongue was swollen, and suggested he may have gone into something, and licked something toxic. The medicine he prescribed to Mango cured him quicker than I had expected. I noticed a difference in Mango within 30 minutes, as a matter of fact. Mango says Meow Meow! My first impression: at the office, there are only a few designated parking spaces for cars to park plus an open area along a fence used as a free for all. Not a great place to park if you want to get in and out safely. And the entire building needs to be renovated and updated--it's old and rundown. That was my first visit. Since then, I saw them only a few times for routine things. Dr G. was pleasant and perfunctory. My last visit was when I had to euthanize my cat. They did not offer in home euthanasia. They did not offer pre-sedation. Once there, instead of giving her sedation to make her fall asleep, they gassed her. They took her from me, gassed her, and after 10 minutes or more, had me go back to be with her. There was a gas mask around her head. Dr. L. G. gave the injection. My final impression: despite the fact that they did not offer in home euthanasia or any sedation and that they used gas, and although I knew this ahead of time, I felt obliged to concede. I was between a rock and a hard spot. My sweet cat was very sick and it had to be done. There are businesses around who offer in home euthanasia but at $400, this was not something I could or would pay. My regret is that I am troubled in knowing that her last moments were in the hands of strangers. And I was not with her. I am troubled knowing that she must have struggled when the gas mask was applied. And I was not there. At the end, Dr. L. G. offered her sympathy. But to me, it all seemed practical and impersonal. And although I don't believe this was intentional, it was my impression. It surprises me that Dr. L. G., a fairly new vet, does not offer in home euthanasia or sedation as part of her practice as a new, young vet. The lesson learned here is that you need to ask your vet about their euthanasia procedure. If they don't offer sedation before or during, or if they use gas, find another vet because you will be left with a lot of sad regret. P.S. Dr. L. G. did quickly come up with a diagnosis and the treatment was appropriate. Some people might say that is all that counts, but for me I wanted my beloved cat at home, in my arms, asleep before she left me forever. read more

I absolutely recommend this veterinarian office for your furry friends. Dr Gerhart and Laura are absolutely amazing. They brought my "8" week old actually turned out to be 3-4 weeks old Rottweiler puppy back to life. Yes we reported the breeder/seller but they brought my beautiful girl back to life now to be a 80 pound girl!!! They were absolutely amazing by doing literally everything they could and made sure I understood everything to care for my girl. There is no one else I trust to care for my girl than Southwest Animal Veterinary Hospital. I actually was extremely pleased with the care I got from our puppy that my family changed vets for our chocolate lab. They are wayyy much reasonable priced for monthly Heartguard and Nextguard rather than Family Veterinarian off of Sw 60th Ave in Ocala Fl. There is a wait tho because the vets take their time with EACH patient and I am extremely pleased with how long the vets take each time to make sure I am 100% satisfied. Yes there is bad reviews but I truely recommend this amazing vets office as it is family owned. read more

I'm really disappointed there is no lower rating. First they lost my cat's records that his former vet had faxed so we had to postpone his appointment. Then we had to wait 40 minutes after our appointment time before we got called in to a room. The vet techs were very rough getting him out of his cat carrier. As a vet tech, myself, I was shocked. After a minute or two a man entered the room and started looking at the paperwork. He never introduced himself or extended any niceties. I explained the problem my cat was having and where we were in his course of treatment. The man, whom I assumed to be the vet told me he wanted to start the cat over at the beginning of treatment. When I reminded him of what had already been done, he completely lost his temper. He told me that this is the way it is done, and he kept yelling, "What do you want me to do, wave a magic wand?!" I was so shocked. I told him that I just wanted to leave and never come back. As I was walking back to the lobby, he kept taunting me about the magic wand. Then they had the nerve to charge me $45, which I am mad at myself for paying, but I was just so upset and shocked that I just wanted to get away. read more

I highly recommend NOT bringing your animals here. I just recently moved to the Ocala area and needed a new vet for my 5 yr old tabby cat, just for his yearly check up & shots. Upon arrival they told us we had to wait in our car for the entire visit, even during the examination, which I didn't feel comfortable with since i care deeply about my cat and would like to make sure he's not being mistreated since he obviously can't tell me what happened while he was in there. After checking in with a staff member upon first arriving we ended up waiting over 40 minutes for anyone to come back out and either take my cat inside or filling out paper work since we're new. I eventually had to call just for them to tell me they needed all my info again and asked if i even had an appointment. Like what was the point of me making an appointment in the first place? Anyways once they did finally take him inside they came back out with him no more than 5 minutes later to tell me there's no way they could examine my cat because he's too vicious & that they could only do so if they sedated him and that was going to have to be another appointment. In my 5 years of having my cat i've taken him to 2 different veterinarians in Delaware and never once had any of these issues. They always gave him a physical examination and everything without any issue, being that veterinarians have tactics they're taught to handle animals in any situation.... I mean that is their job. It came out to $106 for a rabbies shot & distemper shot which i know doesn't remotely cost that much being my cousin has worked at a vet hospital for years now in a different state. I do not recommend this place, they're very unprofessional and under staffed. Who knows if my cat even ACTUALLY got his rabbies & distemper shot. Will definitely be finding another vet. read more

I just adopted a Biscion and I needed a Vet near my house in Ocala. I went in a few weeks earlier to do a walk through and see where my dog would be boarded if i had to go away.. I brought her papers and was told it would be about $55.00 to update her shots. Well this morning I brought her in for her appointment and was very disappointed. The Vet reamed me out for 15 min. instead of introducing himself to a new patient he ranted and raved about heart pills and the correct procedure.. etc etc gave me a headache.. they wanted to do more tests I didn't think were necessary so i said not today.. then I got a bill for $96.00 I was stunned...he spent less than 10 min with her and only answered two of my 3 questions i told him i was concerned with. What a HORRIBLE AND EXPENSIVE experience. It is worth the ride to go to a decent caring and loving vet and I will never return to this horrible place.
