Absolutely love this place! The rooms are huge and have all the things you need for comfortable stay. The beds are so incredibly comfortable and the pillows are out of this world. There's free breakfast in the lobby every day with coffee, bagels, muffins, boiled eggs, fruit, and yogurt, etc.. There's a mini fridge, coffee maker, and microwave in the room and you can rent bikes on site. I truly believe the bikes make your experience so much better! This is a very short bike trip to Duvall Street and only about a mile bike ride to Fort Zachary where there's a great beach! Need to make your reservations directly with the hotel. Lots of other people pretend they are the hotel but it's another person trying to make money off the reservation. This is perfectly located and gives you so much paying for your buck! Oh, yes! Southwinds Motel Key West 4-30-25 Out first time staying here, and we would stay here again when visiting Key West. This Motel was not fancy, but it had everything we needed. It is less than a 5-minute walk to Southern most Point Buoy or South Beach and just a block off Deval St. There are 3 pools and plenty of room to park. In the morning, they have a Continental Breakfast in the main lobby. Our rooms were very clean, AC worked fine and very quiet so we could sleep well at night. The beds were comfortable, and the room had Coffee Maker, Refrigerator, large ceiling fan and Microwave in it. Bathroom and shower were functional, and the mirror was large for the ladies to get ready from. Flat Screen TV was a little small, but it did the job. Only thing that I would have wished for was a desk area in our room for my work on a laptop so you may want to make sure your booked room has one. The pool area was clean as was the pool itself. They did supply towels for you in the pool area. There was also a guest laundry on premises and bike rentals. We could park near our room which helped my handicap, Dad. We ordered a Golf Cart to be delivered to our Motel when we booked the room, and it was. One thing to bring up is they add a 50-dollar charge on your bill called Other Charge. We asked about it and it took them a while to explain but that it's a charge for Internet, Beach access and the Continental Breakfast items. I would not have a problem with that, but they never explained that charge when we booked direct with them. This is something you may want to consider this if you're looking into staying there. I requested a quiet room twice prior to arrival and again at check-in; however, I was initially placed just steps away from loud live music that continued until midnight throughout the weekend. After requesting a quieter room, I was moved to the back of the hotel, where it was peaceful and I slept well. Unfortunately, that room was gloomy, dark, and felt dated, as if it hadn't been updated since the 1960s. The main benefit of staying here is that it is more affordable than nearby resorts, hotels, and B&Bs. The location is convenient--one block from the beach and one block from the quieter end of Duval Street. Although I did not use the beach chairs, towels, or the two pools, a daily amenity fee of $30 is still charged. In the future, I will choose to stay at higher-quality hotels. read more

We absolutely loved Southwinds as our key west hotel! It's small & simple but it's clean & affordable! We were literally in our room long enough to sleep! We enjoyed the beach access with towels & a chair (front desk could've done a better job advertising this came with the room though, we happened to see it online during our trip). The pools were also nice & peaceful! This is about a mile from all the action on Duvall street but it's easily walkable, bikeable or driveable. This is a great little place in a terrific location. Yes, it could use some updating, but the reasonable price reflects this. Our room was clean and more than adequate; we mainly used it to shower and sleep. There was plenty of drawer/closet space for our clothing and the bed was comfy. We made a last minute booking and the staff was EXTREMELY helpful. If you have a concern or issue, the staff is very receptive. Grab and go breakfast is included for you to enjoy on the front patio. Also, free use of the beach at the adjacent resort (restaurant, bar, and restrooms). Be sure to visit the Tipsy Rooster (next door) for nightly live music, Milagro (down the street) for an excellent meal, and Ana's Cuban Cafe (across the street) for a quick, delicious lunch or dinner. We stayed 5 nights and enjoyed it. It's simple accommodations, clean and in the perfect location. Just about a block from Duvall on the "southern most" end. We rented bikes from right across the street to get around. It was cheaper than renting them from the motel. We stayed in the room directly next to the office. We had a little patio with tables, chairs and umbrellas just outside our door where we'd sit at night and enjoy a night cap and watch the passers by. There's a little bar/liquor store right next door called The Tipsy Rooster that has acoustic live music. So beware if you go To bed early. The music lastil 10 or 11pm, but it didn't bother us. We were on vacation. motel has 3 pools to cool off in. We stayed in early August 2021. I would highly recommend Southwinds for those on a budget, and still wanting a place perfectly located. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Southwinds Motel for our Key West vacation (06/06/2020-06/10/2020 4 days/ 3 nights). We booked through Expedia and paid $821.99. If you haven't booked with Expedia, they do not include resort fee, you pay that upon arrival. The resort fee was $90.00, so in total we spent $911.99 PROS: Great location, it is the biggest perk. One block from Duval street, 2 minute walk to the southern most point. You can bike anywhere from there. The bed was nice and comfortable. The pillows were the fluffy squishy kind that I love. Feathered. Three pools, one which is heated. You can wash/dry your clothes for no extra charge. Bikes are available for rental. Due to COVID the continental breakfast was only individual wrapped muffins (blueberry was my favorite huge fresh and delicious) and beverages (juice, coffee, tea, H20) CONS: The door knob is a tricky thing, you have to insert the key, slightly pull it out, and then turn to the left to open the door. There is no closet, just a bar with hangers to hang your clothes. There is absolutely no counter space in the bathroom!!! The water for a shower was also tricky; there is a fine line between hot and going to give me a three degree burn hot. I turned the cold water all the way on and then slightly turned the hot knob to get the perfect temperature. OVERALL: I keep stressing this, YELP needs to allow half stars. I give this hotel 2.5 stars. Will come back if it's $200 cheaper or if the nightly rates are $99.00 or less. read more

First, we were given a room right behind the bar out front where live music would be going until 11pm. We had a very long day flying to Tampa and then driving to key west and needed some sleep. After we asked we were given a different room but still near the bar. Very loud music until 11pm. Wifi would work for 10-15 seconds and go out. TV picture quality was not good. Gap under entrance door and quality of interior just ok at best. We moved to a different motel the next am and it was fantastic! Would not stay here again or reccomend it. read more

The key west ferry was cancelled due to weather. We called immediately to find out what our options were. It took well over a week before anyone from the hotel would even give us the time of day and respond to our attempts to contact the manager. No refund was given and no credit towards our trip when we reschedule (which the people who work at the ferry office said was very common because most hotels are so understanding of the weather limitations of the ferry and will give a credit to be used toward a future stay just like the ferry does). Definitely do not to book with this hotel if taking the ferry because you'll be out money due to no fault of your own. Some people save and plan for a really long time for a trip like this and it's unfortunate they have to lose money they can't afford to lose due to this kind of service. read more

Way overpriced. You can do much better in Key West. Surprisingly the price of this motel in April rivaled that of many of the nicer older hotels and bed & breakfasts in Key West. The decor is minimal and basic, the sink tiny (with plaster coming off the back), the AC seemed only to have one setting, the shower was a bit wonky and very low flow, the bathroom window was broken and could not be opened, and the microwave so old and scratched that you had to guess at the settings. To its credit it was clean and the coffee maker worked fine. The location is in the southern, quiet end of the island about 14 blocks from Mallory Square. We booked a little late so did not have much choice. They charge way too much for this motel. The only good part was that Frenchie's Cafe is around the corner and has very good croissants and breakfasts. read more

We chose this motel because it was kitty corner from the Southernmost Hotel that we would eventually move to for our wedding. The place is in walking distance of everything! Rooster's Bar next door was a nightly event for our group - please you can buy liquor inside as well. Bonus! They have 3 pools on the property & serve a small breakfast. The location & cost alone is worth staying here. Could use a bit updating inside but it didn't bother us! We were very happy with our stay. The one is for the pool and the deal breaker for me to ever go back! I thought the "black spots" on the sides and bottom were just chipped cement! Nope!!! Slimy black mold.. Yes I said mold!! One of the pools was " broken" was what we were told when checking in All of the furniture at the pool had mold on it as well. Disgusted to say the least! The office staff was very nice. The rooms were clean. The bathrooms were clean but very outdated. They provided a hair dryer that was probably 20 years old and sounded more like a generator. Breakfast was generic cereal, below average "homemade " muffins, bananas and oranges. There was coffee,juice and milk. Not what you would expect for $400 a night and not even on the beach! I booked a stay at this motel for my husband and I. We paid the deposit as normal. A couple days before our trip my father in law passed away. I called to explain the situation that we would not be able to make the trip and I was told the manager would call me back. He never called me back but emailed me instead and told me that we would not be getting our almost $400 deposit back because that was the policy and since it was less than 2 weeks from our trip that there was nothing he could do. I responded advising again of the family emergency we had experienced and was treated with zero empathy or compassion from the manager. He advised they would not have time to rebook the room and would lose money. I came to find out they rebooked the room and did not lose any money but instead profited off of our tragedy. The manager would not even let me use the deposit as a credit for a stay at a different time! I then requested the contact information of his manager so that I could reach out directly. It took 3 emails to get this information. Once I got this info, which was only an email I sent 3 emails explaining the situation and he could not be bothered to even respond. I will never stay at this motel again and will never recommend this place to anyone. The lack of respect and human decency makes me sick to my stomach. I hope neither of these individuals ever experience being treated like this if they have a family tragedy. It's shameful! The owner just responded on this review, the one who couldn't be bothered to answer any of my emails to him. What a joke! "Sorry you don't like our cancellation policies." How inconsiderate and completely heartless. A completely inhuman response. So I came to key west for 5 days and my friend booked us a room at this motel. The prices were very affordable so it seemed like the right fit. You don't really spend much time at the motel/hotel room except to sleep really when you're on vacation, so we weren't looking for anything fancy. Our stay was very nice! The room was always made up when we returned to it at night, there are three pools there as well. Our room was actually located right outside of one of those pools. It was probably the smallest pool they had but it suited the needs of what we wanted. To just lay out in the sun and go for a dip when we got too hot. So it was perfect really. The grounds were always clean too. Everything was very well kept. What I thought was so cute was apparently in key west they have chickens everywhere. Every day this mother chicken and her babies would casually walk by the pool for a few mins to I guess see if we'd feed them or whatnot. You can't feed them unfortunately - so they'd run off within a few mins. They were so cute though! I'm a big animal lover so this was exciting to me lol Above all- like I said the staff was very nice and that includes the people who made our rooms up and the people in the office. Didn't have any issues at all. They also have a small complimentary breakfast each morning- small things like muffins and coffee. It was cute. Across the street they have a really good deli you should check out if you stay here. There is also a small store where you can get basic groceries across the street as well. And ofcourse the best part is you are only a few blocks away from Duvall street where all the action is. So it's really located in a good spot. We had such a great stay here! Everyone on staff is very friendly and helpful. The rooms are so nice and clean and cleaned daily. Our bed was so comfy! They are very conveniently located near South Beach which is just a short walk and Higgs Beach which is just a short bike or car ride. Duval St. is also just a short walk from the hotel. Do not go here under any circumstance. Rooms are very small and outdated. There are no closets or drawers for your clothing. There are no security locks on the doors. In order to get into the room we had to push an overgrown bush to the side. We left in disgust checking out in less than an hour. Would recommend and would stay again if I make it back! We had guys trip, stayed for 2 nights and it was perfect. We didn't spend much time in the room but to sleep and get ready in it was great! Staff was awesome, we got there before check in and Karen moved a couple things around so we could get in early! Room was very clean and big enough for 4 of us to move around in comfortably. Location is 5 stars, about a 25-30 minute walk to heart of Duval, you can rent bikes or even call an Uber but we just walked. I was pleasantly surprised when we walked into the motel. The lady who was working at the front desk was overly nice, spent a lot of time taking us through an itinerary of what we should do during the day, and made sure that we felt welcome in the Keys. Since we travel fairly frequently, we were a little wary when we walked into the room, as we were not sure what to expect having seen that it was a motel versus a hotel. As soon as we opened the door though, we were so happy to see that everything was extremely clean and really cute. There were also three pools, something we were not aware of, so we were really happy as we knew that it was going to be hot while we were there. Came to town last minute during the beginning of lobster season so several places were already sold out. Found this place that was very reasonable compared to the other places. At first I was very skeptical because it's a "motel", but I was surprised by how big and clean the queen room was, the on site free parking, free WiFi, free breakfast, location to the beach, free bikes, and three small swimming pools. This place isn't near the hustle and bustle of Duval bars/restaurants, but it's a short taxi ride away or a 15 minute walk. I loved the cathedral wooden ceilings with the ceiling fan. There is a liquor onsite, a market that serves breakfast/lunch across the street, and a few other places to eat within a block. Cons: the property is run down and reminiscent of a 70s property that is stuck in time. Summary: for the price it was worth it and I would stay again if we found another great deal here. read more

I have so many great things to say about this hotel but I will start with the amazing staff. Specifically EVIE! Who is amazing. We stayed here this past NYE. Obviously a busy time . We showed up a bit early in the hopes to site see. When we called the day before someone said it wouldn't be a problem if we parked at the hotel in the morning while we did so . When we arrived they said we couldn't because they didn't have enough people check out yet . I was annoyed but fine . We came back a few hours later and talked to Evie who not only said we could park there but continued to get us an early check in because our room was ready over two hours early! She more than made up for my earlier annoyance ! We were beyond impressed with her service . She then helped us rent one of those little cars and got us a discount . AND got us a late checkout the next day. My boyfriend proposed to me a few hours later while we were sight seeing and when we got back I had to tell her because I already felt like we were friends she is that personable . She was so excited for us and continued to give us dinner recommendations and cab numbers because we wanted to celebrate . The room we stayed in was small but all we needed since we were barely in it ! It was clean . The pools are a very nice amenity and the location of the hotel is great! For New Year's Eve they surprised us with really nice champagne, chocolate covered strawberries , cookies and cupcakes from an amazing local bakery and lots of NYE hats and fun stuff ! The works !!! They know it's an expensive night there and make it worth it! This hotel is right by the southernmost point . You will want to take a cab or rent a cart if you are planning on going out on a duval crawl! Since it was New Year's Eve we couldn't get ahold of a cab at 1 am and ended up walking all the way from captain Tony's which took us an hour in our drunken stupor . Yay! This is an amazing hotel in an amazing location with amazing rates. It's clean, the rooms are well-maintained and pretty spacious, and the staff are so friendly and accommodating. There are on-site bikes for rent. We didn't get to take advantage of the beach, which is really close by (they give you little vouchers for hotels and chairs provided by the restaurant on the beach), or the pool, but it's nice that those amenities are available. I read the reviews and chose this motel based on location, walking distance to beach access and military discount. First of all, when I checked in, the desk clerk was rude snd acted like I was bothering her. Then I went to take a shower in room 15 where the shower is so small, you can only stand, not turn around. The shower curtain was filthy and the hot water did not work. I went to the office and the desk clerk acted like I was asking for gold when I asked for a room with hot water. We then had to move after unpacking with no offer of help or a cart for our inconvenience. I then found out that I paid more for military discount than the regular price. Of course, those ladies did not care. The continental breakfast was a joke of just muffins daily, no yogurt or fruit or even granola bars. Parking was a nightmare because people rent scooters and park their car, so you may have to park on the other side if you drive out somewhere. The motel is dated, the room they moved us to did have warm water but no shower pressure and a sink that you couldn't even set a tube of toothpaste on because it was so small. The only reason I have it 2 stars was for the 2 nice desk clerks that worked on different days. I asked to see the manager and he just said 'Sorry' basically. If you are doing Key West, do yourself a favor snd stay somewhere else. I am sure you could find a nice Air B and B that would be more worth your money. read more

I was really impressed with our stay here. We stayed for one Saturday night in Mid May driving down from Ft Lauderdale as a pre-graduation celebration. Since this is a little boutique hotel, the desk is not open 24-7 like larger hotels. We were able to check in gross as hell after a 3 hour snorkel and booze cruise, and it was smooth as a baby's butt to do so. Our room was clean, cool, and comfortable. There aren't a lot of 5 star resorts in the keys and you will certainly pay dearly for them: these quaint little places are what the keys are all about. We had a bright blue painted room decorated in white wicker and with a nice clean bed. A full size coffee maker and mini fridge came in handy along with the complementary wifi. I did notice that here was a TV in the room but the cable box didn't want to cooperate. However you go to the keys to enjoy the sun and the atmosphere, not sit in the room and watch TV, so no harm no foul. It was easy to check out and get the bill, and there were amazing Key Lime muffins available as breakfast. We didn't have time to check out the pool or other amenities but noticed there were vending machines and other things like laundry if you needed it. This hotel was very close to the Southernmost point and near a little bodega which was very convenient. We walked to Duval and the beach and almost everywhere on the island-location was awesome. Without researching hotels in the area, my boo called this hotel out of the blue; ended up finding a 2 bedroom as someone canceled at the last minute so it was good. Can't remember what room we stayed in. Once arriving the placed looked pretty clean and very close to everything in Key West. Private parking is available which is a plus! When we walked in the bed was right there. On the left hand side the mini kitchen with a sink, microwave and mini-fridge. We continued on through and the bathroom (bit small but clean with a sliding door) to the left and the 2 beds are to the right. The hotel looked like it went through some renovations, well at least our room, possibly new management as the flooring and bathrooms looked redone. The 3 days we were there we walked most of the time. Very close to Duval street. The rate was more then what we would spend at the time which was around February 2014, a little over $200 per night. We called again this month to find out how much their rates were: $350 a night!! WTF! They must have changed management because that is crazy high. Even though it's going to be hot, we will try again in May. But overall was experience was pretty good. read more

BED BUGS! My friend and I both got bed bugs from this motel. The place was nice enough while we stayed there, however, a few days after we left both my friend and I broke out in red bites ALL OVER our body. We didn't realize at first because I went back to Colorado and she stayed in Florida. However, this motel is the ONLY place we could have came into contact with the bed bugs because it is the only place we both slept. I continued traveling after Key West and now I am afraid I brought bed bugs with me to three different houses! Most people don't realize that bed bug bites do not necessarily show up on a persons body the next morning. In fact, the bites can take up to two weeks to appear depending on the person. Below I have detailed why my friend and I believe we were bitten at Southwinds. We do not have definitive proof, but are both positive this is where we were bitten. Please, read my information and come to your own conclusion. I have been in contact with the hotel, and they have assured me they have cleaned the entire property as a precaution. DETAIL UPDATE: I flew in from Colorado to Florida for a vacation. Myself and two friends then drove down to Key West. There were a total of 3 of us who stayed at Southwinds. My friend Kayla and I slept in the bed, while my other friend slept on the pull-out; my other friend never even sat on the bed from my recollection. We stayed there for two nights. Upon waking up the first night, my friend Kayla noticed a few rusty colored spots on the bed. I thought for sure it was something we dragged in from the night before so I thought nothing of it. We continued our stay and the next morning we noticed more spots on the bed but shrugged them off. My friends returned to their home and I went back to Colorado. We did not speak for a week. I actually assumed I was bitten by sea lice because I swam through some sea weed. It is important to note that my friend did not go into the ocean at all. My friend contacted me this week and asked if I was also covered in bites. I have 20 bites on my left arm alone. They are red and itchy; I compared them to many bed bug bite photos and they look exactly the same. My friend Kayla even thought it could have been from her bed or house, even though she never had bites before she stayed at the hotel. So she took steps to investigate her entire house and found no evidence of bed bugs. My other friend who did not sleep in the bed has not bites. Only my friend Kayla and I have bites. I never stepped foot in my Kaylas house, nor did she go anywhere else I went while I was traveling. The only place Kayla and I slept in the same room was in the Southwinds motel. We were only together for two days, and then she went back to her house (again, I never even stepped foot into her house) and I went to Colorado. No one else has any bites. I have contacted every person I came in contact with since I stayed at the hotel, and no one else has a single bite anywhere. I even considered the possibility that the car we traveled in had the bed bugs--but no one else who was in the car had any bites. Further, I sat in the front and she sat in the back. read more

The floors were constantly damp/wet, possibly due to the fact that the shower was ground level and didn't have an appropriate shower curtain. Worst check in experience I've ever experienced. Tummyneesha was the most disrespectful front desk lady I could have had the mispleasure of dealing with. I don't understand why work somewhere when you hate you your job that much. It all started when I asked what an amenity fee is. I'm familiar with resort fees in this area but hadn't heard or an amenity fee so I asked for an explanation. The disrespect and rudeness from tummyneesha started there and didn't end. I apologized multiple times seeing that this question upset here just for her to get meaner. She refused to give me a second key to the room I had three guests staying in and once we arrived and checked the map, realized we had been put in a closet sized room with one bed. It was the smallest on the property according to the map we grabbed in the office. We asked tummyneesha if we could have a room with second beds to which she replied, there is no other available rooms. However, the guy in line in front of us was offered another room due to some issue he was having and he declined. They couldn't have a more miserable and spiteful person working the front desk. My guests and I are beyond disgusted with the service we received when walking through the door of this sad excuse of a motel. Currently sitting in the car searching for ANYWHERE else besides this place last minute. We've previously stayed at paradise inn and southernmost inn and had nothing but the most amazing experiences there. Thought we'd try somewhere new but that was a huge mistake. read more

LOCATION, SERVICE & ACCOMMODATION! Top 3 that this place has. Found it on Yelp and they didn't disappoint. It's centrally located. The staff were very accommodating to our needs considering its my first time in Key West. They gave us recommendations on places to go eat and visit from a locals perspective. They also allowed us to leave our car there so we won't have a hard time looking for parking after we checked out. They have bike rental to go exploring. There's continental breakfast, free wifi and cable. At the time of my booking, this place was the cheapest when it comes to location. This place was awesome. Friendly staff....nice rooms for the price. The location was close to all the attractions but far away from the noise. It is an older place but kept well. Had a queen suite for 4 people and had plenty of room. When I return to KW...I will stay here again! read more

Visited, May, 2021. I would recommend staying at Southwinds because of the quiet location off Duvall Street, and the outdoor bar. There's a store and eatery just across the street too. Drive the golf carts for faster sight seeing. read more
