We visited the Sovah Health ER October 21, 2025 about 8:00am. My daughter needed to be seen for a neck/shoulder injury. Which ended up being a pulled muscle or muscle strain. They were great. Very professional, customer service was excellent! We were in and out within about an hour through fast track. The only problem I did have was my daughter was prescribed a muscle relaxer that was not paid by my prescription insurance. I do believe they should have checked our insurance to make sure it was definitely covered. We ended up not being able to get the prescription. I give them 5 stars especially since you used to have to wait in the waiting room for almost 5-10 hours. This was 10+ years ago. I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding the care and communication my father has received from Dr. Balasubram during his current hospitalization. My father has a serious medical condition and, based on our understanding of his needs, our family has requested that he be transferred to a university-level hospital with neurosurgical resources available to provide the level of care he requires. Dr. Balasubram recommended transfer to Lewis Gale; however, because our family previously had a negative experience with that facility, we declined that option. We understand there may be medical or logistical concerns related to refusing a recommended transfer, but our decision was made in an effort to advocate for the safest and most appropriate care for my father. Since declining the transfer to Lewis Gale, our interactions with Dr. Balasubram have caused significant concern. We felt that her communication with my father and my sister was dismissive, intimidating, and inappropriate for a patient-care setting. Rather than helping our family understand the available options and make an informed decision, the tone and manner of these interactions left my father feeling afraid to speak up for himself. I also want to emphasize that patients have the right, within the limits of the law, to refuse treatment and to advocate for appropriate care. My concern is not only for my father's current situation, but also for other patients who may not fully understand their rights or may not have family members available to advocate on their behalf. I hope that my concerns regarding Dr. Balasubram's communication and conduct be addressed to ensure that other patients and families do not encounter this type of demeanor. read more

Awful hospital. My mother had dementia, fell, and broke her hip. The emermency room physican who called about this couldn't stop laughing about how "funny" my mother was. Glad she thought dementia was funny. Surgery was needed and a few hours after the emergency room admitting doctor the surgeons called me. One of them was complaining because he asked my mother was happened, and she said she fell. His complaint was "how did that help him?" Seriously, the surgeon's only concern was how my mother made it difficult on him???? Really??? Avoid this place at all costs. Never never never go to this hospital unless you truly are on death bed's door. read more

My family and I unfortunately had to go to Sovah health's emergency department on Christmas morning, due to an allergic reaction. The check-in process was interesting, mainly because the non-medical staff member at the hospital's front desk initiated registration and the whole check-in process for the emergency department. During this process, a woman showed up after us asking for assistance getting the next patient out of her car. She clearly explained his situation and the worsening medical problem that he has (which was urgent), but the staff kept telling her that she will be right with her. Eventually the staff person calls for a male co-worker close by, who also told her to wait for a moment. Eventually, my husband offered to help the woman get the patient out of the car, but the staff member told him it was not necessary and that they were going to help him out. After some time, we were able to see that they were finally able to help him out of the car and put him into a wheelchair since he arrived to the emergency department while we were going through triage. I personally didn't like how both staff members kept brushing off that situation with the other patient, which is why I believe they should have someone with some type of medical background helping out with registration. It may have been like that temporarily, due to the holiday, but I can see that going down hill very quickly with someone with a more acute illness. Anyway, after registration and going to the second floor for the emergency department (not sure if this is its permanent home since they were doing construction on the emergency department), we were told to wait in the waiting area before we were called in for triage. After a short wait, we were called in and triaged before sitting back out into the waiting area. The waiting area is somewhat spacious, but seating is limited since they are spread out for social distancing. Unfortunately, people were using the emergency department waiting area as hangout with their friends. After about three hours of waiting, we were finally called back to be evaluated by a medical provider. We were seen by a nurse practitioner who did not introduce himself at the start of the evaluation. I checked for his badge to confirm that he's a hospital employee, but I didn't find out his name or credentials until we received our discharge summary. Other than that, he did a great job taking down my family member's history, examining her, and prescribing the appropriate medication to her. The nurses treating us were friendly, despite being busy and dealing with some difficult and entitled patients, and they introduced themselves upon initial contact. One of them thoughtfully grabbed me a chair so I could have a seat, without me asking for one! Overall, I'm pleased my family member was seen and treated effectively for an allergic reaction. Sovah health has good potential. There are things that should be addressed to make things run more efficiently for both employees and patients. It's clear that the employees in the emergency department are overwhelmed with patients (both with true emergencies and those utilizing it as a regular clinic). Some of the ED staff were very friendly despite the amount of patients in the ED. I just hope that they make it standard protocol for all employees to introduce themselves upon initial contact with the patients, especially for the medical providers. read more

I had a deeply disappointing interaction with Heather Hamlett, Manager at SOVAH Ear, Nose, and Throat. If it were possible to give zero stars, I would. As a paying patient, I expect courtesy and professionalism, regardless of any scheduling or communication issues. Instead, I was left feeling dismissed and undervalued--an experience that falls far short of the standards I expect from a healthcare practice. read more

Took my girlfriend there because she was having a lot of pain and turns out it was a appendicitis. We was there form 11:13pm -6 something in the morning. The nurse and doctor was rude beside the head nurse. Everytime she needed the nurse it would take almost 20 mins for someone to come. For a place that supposed to take care of you and help you but you don't get that here at all. read more

I went into this ER 3 times seeking help, because for the past 2 weeks I had been vomiting. I realize when I went in I was displaying symptoms of extreme anxiety, but that is not all that was wrong. The first 2 times they did nothing but take my blood and give me an IV and Ativan / Xanax / muscle relaxers. The third visit they finally did a CAT scan which came back fine, so they sent me home. I kept telling them on that third visit my legs were uncontrollably jerking, and the nurse once again passed it off as anxiety. I went to a different hospital when I started getting dehydrated again, and luckily was able to get in with an endocrinologist. They suspect I have Addison's disease, and I may be having episodes which are dangerous if left untreated. This hospital has let me and my family down more than once over the years at that. It's dirty (trash everywhere even when not busy; looks like its never been mopped) and half of the staff are rude. They'll tell you they're too busy to remove an IV tube so you can pee, while they're just standing around the desks laughing and talking. My mother had to take up for me while I was sick due to one nurse giving us attitude and treating me like I was beneath her. I couldn't do it myself because I was too busy vomiting and violently shaking. Another nurse tried to cover for her, and said "She's had a lot of patients tonight." Why am I expected to give empathy to a nurse who's whole job is to give empathy to patients? She had none for me. Do not go here if you have a choice! If you can make it to the Eden or the Reidsville hospitals (both about 30 minutes away), you'll get the care you expect from an ER. read more

Everybody working here seems so uninterested in their job or they may be just overworked but whatever the case may be they need some help as far as staffing. If you have a choice of hospital I would go elsewhere. I feel like they try but when you dealing with sick people you need to show more care than what I see taking place. read more

Excellent doctor and nurses in the ER. But the wait time is just too long. Stayed here for over 4 hours. Had to wait to get admitted for a room for an overnight stay. Service was great but need to work on providing more rooms for patients. It is better to go between the hours of 1am and 3am. read more

Staff in MRI was awesome. We arrived with little notice from our doctor needing an MRI very urgently and staff was phenomenal.

This review is specific to outrageous billing practices, not the level of care which I thought was adequate. The billing issue is bad enough to negate the best of care though as Sovah is guilty of most of the practices responsible for most Americans agreeing the US healthcare system desperately needs to be completely overhauled. In October of 2018, much of the east coast of the US had just experienced the devastation of Tropical Storm Michael and Danville was part of a massive regional power outage. My basement had flooded and I was moving furniture, trying to get the water out. While doing so, I hit my head on a sharp edge and though it didn't bleed a lot, the laceration was deep and my neighbors agreed I probably needed a few sutures. It was probably 9 or 10 pm and none of the local urgent care centers were open. I had only one local choice and that was Sovah ED in Danville. They weren't busy at all surprisingly and they took me right back within a few minutes. I never saw a physician but the PA I did see was very nice and did a good job putting in three sutures. I was in the ED maybe an hour from the time I arrived. I assumed the bill would be higher than an urgent care center since it is the ED but I had no idea just how much higher. Remember, this is the care I received: 1 shot of local anesthetic, 3 sutures and 1 Tetanus shot. All performed by a PA. I'm not going to go through every bill that I received over the next few months but I ended up paying my entire deductible to the tune of $3000 on top of what my insurance covered (I had/have a high deductible HSA). I believe the total they initially billed was over $7000. For 2 shots and 3 sutures. I'm writing this review tonight because earlier today, almost exactly two years since the incident in question, I received yet another bill because they apparently finally figured out a way to get my insurance company that I had at the time to accept yet another charge and they paid around $200 of it leaving me on the hook for over $380. I paid my entire deductible two years ago, when this actually happened and I have a different insurance now. So now I'm going to be $3380 out of pocket for 2 shots and 3 sutures. And they also got thousands out of my old insurance company. I did call their number on the bill to ask if there was any way they could just accept what I had already paid as it has to be more than adequate to cover the care I received. The unamused CSR to whom I spoke would only offer to set up payments. I again explained it's not that I cannot pay, it's the principle. Just how much do they need from me? No dice. So I paid. I had no choice. I'm not having my credit ruined and it seems I have no recourse. It seems the laws, as written allow them to bill for whatever they want and the customer/patient is legally obligated to pay. Sovah takes full advantage of this. I guess I'm good until they send the next bill out of the blue. There's honestly no way to know when you're finally done paying them - my Sovah account online showed a $0 balance due for the past 18+ months so I'm honestly not holding my breath that we're done. read more

Had been going to Danville Oncology for 19 years since I was treated for breast cancer there and after (5) years, have been going once yearly for my checkup and lab panels and to be seen by the oncologist. On Fri., Dec. 8, 2017, I had my yearly appointment - when arriving at the office, I was told they had moved into the hospital. So I make it to the hospital and into their office there and filled out new paperwork and was told that in addition to paying for my yearly visit and my lab panels, that I would have to pay an outpatient fee in the amt. of around $700.00 to the hospital because their offices are located in the hospital now - Come on people, this is for my yearly checkup with an oncologist that in the past 19 years, I have only paid for the appointment and the lab work. I could have gone on Amtrak to New York, seen an oncologist, for less than this amt. Why should I have to pay an outpatient fee for an office visit. This visit had nothing to do with going to the hospital. Also, I was told I had been assigned a new doctor - none of this was relayed to me before the visit - they never advised me that their office had moved, that I would be seeing a new doctor, or about any outpatient fees. I refused to see the doctor and pay these costs. Will find an oncologist office elsewhere. Also, have called the hospital several times since Fri., 12/8/17 for an answer regarding the charging of the outpatient fees and no one has contacted me back!!!! I wonder if you have to pay these outpatient fees if you go everyday for chemo treatments - but like I said, no one will contact me back. Joyce Yancey read more

I had Sovah Home Health come in for over a month after having surgery. Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy. Every one was excellent, professional, friendly and caring. I would recommend them to everyone. Was almost sorry to see them go, when we were through with my health care. read more

Front desk and charge nurse could care less what the family stated. Even after the family made the nurse aware of who the power of attorney was she still refused to talk to all of the kids except for the child that knew little to nothing about the situation. read more

Great care! Had to be a patient in the ER and they were fantastic. I was taken straight back. No Wait! Amazing! I was treated with courtesy and respect by the doctors and nurses. I had to stay a few hours before I was we'll enough to leave but I felt well taken care of. I had heard things were getting better at the hospital and after experiencing it myself I can honestly say they are . Thanks for the great care! read more

Let me begin by saying, I am not one to bash a hospital for the service. One thing I can say about this hospital in particular, it was awful in every way. I literally met ONE person who was nice throughout the whole ordeal that brought me to this hospital. My husband is a truck driver who gets the pleasure of traveling. Monday night he arrived at a hotel in Martinsville VA and noticed his abdomen was cramping really bad. He went to bed thinking that the pain would just work itself out. However Tuesday around 1:30 AM, I received a call that he was going to go to the closest ER because his symptoms all matched appendicitis. Thankfully I was only 2 hours away. He had sit me a screenshot of the google reviews on this hospital and I jokingly said, it cannot be that bad. I WAS SO WRONG. We received the worst service from the ER all the way until we left. I wish more than anything at this point that we would have known from the beginning what the pain was so we could have got him back to Wilkes County, NC. People here might make jokes on our hospital being bad but I have never received service as horrible as what we received at Sovah Regional Medical Center. When I arrived at 8:30 - 9 AM my husband was sitting in a basically empty ER (I know this because I got lost and found a completely empty section). When I walked in he told me that he hadn't seen anyone in HOURS, he was honestly thinking that they had pulled the curtain and forgot him. We sat there for a bit and I could see out past the curtain a bit, figured out why no one had visited his room because they were all gathered around a computer on social media and just laughing and cutting up. Finally 2 nurses came into the room (2 b.c one was training) and explained they were going to take him to the OR. They even seemed shocked that my husband was just sitting there without a blanket or anything. After surgery they took my husband to a room, from that time on I literally seen one doctor (who couldn't speak English) in the time I was there. If you wanted a nurse or even a CNA, wasn't happening in a timely manner. Twice we hit the call button only for them to turn it off, wait 5-8 minutes THEN make their way into the room. My sister is a nurse at our local hospital and just telling her of the horrible service we received, she was shocked. She spent the whole month of January 2019 in Brenners Children in Winston Salem NC with her son. When I visited them there I was always blown out of the water by how caring the nurses and doctors were. We didn't expect a lot, honestly my husband and I are quiet people who never once would have made their job any harder than it had or needed to be. However, being in the healthcare industry shouldn't just be a JOB, it's a calling. The people that I encountered at Sovah Regional Medical facility were lacking that. I'm sure some people there wanted to be there and loved their job but sadly I didn't encounter those people. I wish I had a different story to tell. Weeks later I'm working with Aflac to file a claim for this and Sovah is telling AFLAC they can submit their request but it will take up to 15 days. Fine, I get that. The AFLAC representative I'm dealing with reached out to Sovah to get an update, you know 8 days into that 15 day wait time. AFLAC says that no one will return their call about this request. In the end, I know this review will mean nothing to most people but if you have an option to go to a different hospital, do so. When you have to be in the hospital the last thing you want to be worried about is the service you receive. Everyone knows health care is expensive, I get that but again I expect WAY more than what we received. Again being in the healthcare industry is NOT just a job. Sadly, the people we encountered there view it as a job, nothing else. read more
