I came into the California Science Center all whatever about it, but when I actually saw it's massiveness, I was quite impressed. I once had a dream as a child to be an Astronaut. I went to Space Camp. I have sat in the space shuttle launch control room at Cape Canaveral. I own copies of unpublished private photos from space. I have touched an Atlas Rocket. I LOVE SPACE! I still wish to go into space someday. I just doubt that I will ever be so lucky. So at least I can touch and see something that has been there multiple times. I was extremely proud of what we used to do as a spacefaring nation. To visit something as awe-inspiring as a space shuttle is a special thing. The history, knowledge, and adventurousness that are associated with this are incredible. It reawakened a bit of my childhood and my love for space that had been missing for a few years to say the least. None the less, I turned into a kid again and remembered a lot about the craft in front of me. I had built models of it as a kid. But 1/64th scale with 1/2" high astronauts 30 years ago just doesn't prepare you for the real thing when you are next to it. Absolutely stunning to say the least. I loved it. I just wish I could take off in it. The displays that teach you numerous things about this spacecraft are daunting but wonderful. I just want a ride in it. Let's Go! read more

Finally was able to make here to see the United States Endeavour shuttle, before there seemed to be huge long lines to go in but now it has died down. For only $4 you are able to go in and literally almost touch America's last space shuttle. The videos, pictures and stories of our last space shuttle being shipped through Los Angeles's busy streets are quite remarkable. To even comprehend the amount of planning and logistics that went into making all of this possible is amazing. I really enjoyed viewing this exhibit and it is definitely something worth your time seeing if you are in the area of LA's science museum. Parking is $10 and on the weekends this place gets really busy, because the museum has free admission but like I said viewing the shuttle is extra and its for a good cause. Hopefully all this attention will get the government to fund more shuttle missions in the future. read more

Prepare to be amazed ... for only $2!! Now I get why the paperboy was so doggedly after Lane Meyer!! The Shuttle Endeavour Exhibit is the number one draw for the California ScienCenter. While the admission to the museum is free, you need to buy a special ticket in order to see the Endeavour. Thankfully, it is only $2!! The current setup is supposedly temporary, and they are working on plans to build a more permanent display, with the shuttle mounted vertically, no less! It may be years before that happens, but in the meantime, it doesn't disappoint! Besides actually seeing "OV-105," your two bucks also gets you access to the rest of the spaceflight exhibits, where you can learn about what life is like aboard a shuttle in orbit. It really is a fantastic exhibit! It's amazing how much there is to consider to make spaceflight safe and achievable. Hopefully, it'll inspire our kids to become astronauts and engineers! A piece of our history, definitely not to be missed. I still remember watching the Challenger during homeroom in middle school - and being in shock and not understanding what was happening. The exhibit had just the right balance of honoring the lost shuttles and paying respect to the astronauts, without overdoing the emotions. The Space Shuttle is sure to bring memories to everyone. To get up close and personal with the shuttle is an incredible experience. Getting the size of the shuttle speaks volumes of the payloads that it can carry. The cargo bay can hold an 80 passenger bus and more and take it to space. The rocket engines are large enough to stand in and there are three of them. Think of the rocket that the space shuttle ties to that is even larger. Mind boggling is way to simplistic a phrase. Around the walls are listings of the missions and the cargo for each. Very interesting indeed. This is a real must see. Note that if you don't have a reservation to see the shuttle you can use your IMAX ticket for anytime entrance. read more

Excellent exhibit! Very well done. I had no idea how many space shuttle missions there had been between 1981-2011! The various information stations about life on the shuttle are very cool with a mix of audio and visual information. The footage of a launch from the vantage point of Mission Control was really cool. Don't miss the time lapse film about moving the shuttle from wherever it was to LA. Only disappointed by the simulator ride ($6 each). I was hoping for a more realistic experience. I wouldn't spend the money unless you have kids who might think it's cool. All in all, this is a great place to spend a day. read more

It is such a cool exhibit and it's only going to get better in the years to come!! It is is a $2 ticket. It cover the inside informative exhibit walk through and the outside hanger for your chance to look at endeavour. The inside exhibit shows give you a close look at the tires that have to be changed with each landing, as well as the toilets they use, and the rehydration station they need for food. There are cool videos to watch, especially the last one in which you can see how t he you maneuvered through the streets of la. Now for the main attraction, you exit the the information part and go down the stairs to the hanger outside. You have to make sure that you still have your ticket as people try going in without tickets. It is such a beautiful space shuttle. It's huge!!! They also have the workshop on display for you to look at. The staff there is really friendly, and I know that it the next few years they will redesign the exhibit to include the external tank and look like it's ready for launch....that will be cool and I can't wait to visit that in the future!!! read more

I surprised my "space nut" hubby with a date day to this exhibit. I was a bit naive and thought we would actually get to view the inside of the space shuttle. I will give the exhibit 5 stars because my hubby was very happy. We paid $2 each to reserve our ticket time. You don't need to do this if you buy IMAX tickets or another exhibit ticket. First you enter a large room filled with space travel information, video, memorabilia, etc.. My hubby did the optional $5 space simulator. It lasted longer than I would have expected, and he seemed to enjoy it. I had zero interest. Then we went into the room with the actual space shuttle. It was cool! We read every single space shuttle plaque and saw every inch of this exhibit. We still covered it in 75-90 minutes. It was a fun day! The rest of the museum is great too. Ohhh WOW this was my first words when i first saw Space Shuttle Endeavour, I am from the UK and this was one of my top things to see whilst i was in LA. The whole science museum is free but i do believe that there is a charge on peak days or you may have to book in advance, Its a superb museum and there are some really interesting space and science exhibits to see in here from the great displays and short films. Endeavour is in a separate hanger and as soon as i walked through the door and saw it i cried its so emotional seeing something like this! Its not every day you get to see a space shuttle! Endeavour made a staggering 25 missions and traveled 122,883,151 miles pretty remarkable so make sure you come take a visit to this astounding exhibition. read more

How cool is it to have visited an actual space shuttle! Not a replica and you get really close to it too! The entire exhibit is worth way more than $2 admission. The exhibits showcasing pieces of the space shuttle are very informative. The video showing how it was brought to the California Science Center is fascinating (I watched it twice). It's also interesting to see the earthquake precautions that have been taken into place. A staff member shared that the museum is raising funds to build another building for the space shuttle. The goal is that the shuttle will be upright and that there will be a ladder constructed so that you can see the shuttle from above. I can't wait! A must see when you are in LA! read more

Wow. One of a kind experience to be in a room and walk all around an actual spaceship. As in a ship that has been in space and has the re-entry burns to show for it. Even just the achievement in getting the space shuttle to the hangar, through the streets of Los Angeles, which is shown in a short time lapse film, is amazing. The shuttle is slumming it for now in a generic hangar, which was better than I expected, but will be lifted up and on a vertical mount along with the tank and solid rocket boosters as though ready for launch again. Absolutely awe-inspiring to think about the environments this machine travels in and through, the extreme physical forces acting on this craft, its contributions to science and mankind, and the ability to make dreamers of us all. A slightly larger facility would be a nice boost to help really show off the entire machine, but the current "intimate" shelter is really not bad (just makes getting decent full-craft pics a challenge. When first hearing about the Endeavor I was not that intrigued, but seeing it in person was very cool! They have many artifacts and pictures describing every inch of the spaceship and more. They do have a few artifacts that you can touch like the wheels, the glass protection and few others. When looking at the main spaceship you are always looking up as it is displayed above the visitors heads. You can take pictures with it as long as you do not touch it. It is located in a big warehouse type room and it is somewhat dark inside so the pictures might not be that bright if you are looking for that perfect shot. It is spacious where you are not bumping to the next person beside you who is reading and looking as well. Along the walls of the museum there are canvas pictures of the spaceship being transported through the streets of Los Angeles and seeing the people's reactions in the pictures was great as they were all excited. This part of the exhibit is not free - there is a small fee if you want to see this area of the museum only. There is also a small spaceship simulator where you can ride it and feel first hand of how it is to be in space - that is free and comes with the fee for this exhibit. They also have a small section where they sell souvenirs just from the spaceship alone, items like shirts, keychains, and books. Before visiting it might be best to call ahead to see if the exhibit is still available, I heard it is there to stay but they can always take it out and replace it with other artifacts. Do not try to skip this section of the museum it is definitely worth a visit especially if you are into math and science. Plus, there is hardly any line for this part - you can go in right ahead. read more

A true piece of history! Glad we took the time to stop at the museum while we were downtown. Knowing people that worked on the space shuttle program, it's always been something that i was very interested in. We even took our kids out of school testing to see it when it landed near our home. But, nothing compares to being able to see it close-up. The setting allows you to get close enough to see the wear-and-tear markings, missing heat shields, etc. in person. The facility is a little small (for taking good pictures without the correct lens), but the flip-side of that is that you can get REALLY CLOSE to it. And, the kids will love finding out how they use the restroom in space! I'm with the other reviewers...go as soon as you can! It won't be the same experience when it is moved upright! (and, if you are a photo-geek, come prepared with your wide-angle, etc.) read more

It is so cool to see a space shuttle up close. The exhibit is very informative but the best part are the volunteers, most have worked for some aspect of the shuttle program. We spoke for a long time with a gentleman who had worked for Rockwell to develop the materials to protect the shuttle exterior from heat and cold. Many different products were invented to protect each part of the shuttle, such as the nose or bottom. He had samples of the various materials, including the heat tiles. read more

There was no admission fee for us, but we did donate some money before entering. There's quite a bit to see and read about here. There are exhibits and then there's the giant hanger where the Endeavor is parked. I remember seeing it and thinking, "Wow, it really is HUGE!" It was such an awesome experience to see the space shuttle up close and in person. Just the massive size of it and seeing all the little details on the outer skin/shell, the markings and lables etc... Also on display is one of the jet engines/rockets that plays part in providing the 1/2 million pounds of thrust this machine produces to propel into space. WOW!!! UTTERLY IMPRESSIVE!! Went there yesterday with the family. Had a super great time!! Definitely worth it....Since it was our first time, Greg, at the help desk, extremely nice guy, gave us maps, and told us the best way to go, and catch everything!!!! My kids had a blast, I almost fell asleep in the Toddler Room, as my daughter was playing with all the toys, she looked sooooo Happy!! Overall...everything was SUPER GREAT..... Just one small downside, I don't know if it was me, but the space shuttle, even though it was there, looked fake....like someone had wrapped it in a cardboard cut-out of what the shuttle was supposed to look like...maybe it was me, I've never seen one up close before....But it did look a little fake to me....Other than that!!! Went on Friday. It was not crowded. Did bump into some school field trip groups. You don't need to reserve view time since it was weekdays. You Do NEED to reserve time if you go during the holidays and weekends. I was thrilled to see the Enveavour. You can go under the space shuttle and get close shots for its tiles. Unfortunitaly, for the preservation purpose, no one is allow to touch or go on it. In the display room, they actually allow you to touch Endeavour's tires, which are really cool. The most important is you only pay parking fee to watch Endeavour. U don't get this kind of experience other places!!! read more

A trip to the Science Center is always free for students so I get stuck going regularly. As much as I can't stand going, I enjoyed and appreciated seeing the space shuttle exhibit. The cool makeshift museum was pretty fascinating. The vivid pictures along the walls, the memorabilia, and actual materials in which the space shuttle is made, all made the trip worthwhile. There were a few people inside that helped answer a few questions and allowed the kids and me to touch a few items. Pretty neat. If only I could've stepped inside the shuttle, that would have been the icing on the cake. read more

In LA, there is undoubtedly a lot to see. One of those things is the Endeavor Space Shuttle. Moving to the West Coast from the East Coast and having the Space program shut down, the thought of having to give up seeing shuttle launches in your driveway was a bit hard to take. Knowing that they were placing a simulator right here in Washington at the Flight Museum was comforting for a Space Nut, but it wasn't a shuttle. The last two launches I caught prior to moving to the West were the Endeavor and to know that it was less than a 6 mile ride from our hotel, it was definitely on my list of "To Do's". I went online to check out just how much this little excursion would cost and to my surprise it was free, but as usual, there were strings attached. You have to reserve your spot and they are set in 15 minute increments. It is best to go during the week and after 1:30pm, however Thanksgiving week and Christmas week are the busiest. Since I was there Thanksgiving week, making my reservation online was a must, however they take down the early times every morning for that particular date. So, since I wanted to go on Monday, the earliest time showing up online was 1:30pm. When I called about an earlier time I was told that I would have to come in, so I opted for a later time and revisited the site and the first available time was 1:45pm. As times were going fast, I made the reservation and paid the $4.00 cost for internet reservations although seeing the Shuttle is a "Free" experience. My issue then became printing out the tickets. I called the box office back and was told that they could print them out there for me at a cost of $2.00. When I arrived at the box office I was told that they would waive the $2.00 fee if I would purchase IMAX tickets at a cost of $8.25 each, so I did. We entered into a maze of escalators and hallways until we finally reached the shuttle and were again distracted by a simulated ride on the shuttle at a cost of $5.00 per adult. After the 8 minute ride we were sent in through a cinema room where you can opt to watch a film or stand in a line and wait to go into the shuttle viewing room. The Shuttle sits atop earthquake proof pylons raising it 11' into the air so you can not touch it, however you can see and photograph each and every aspect of the shuttle. There are also plans to stand the shuttle upright and give patrons a better inside view within the next 5 years. It was very crowded, but we were there on a Sunday. Photographing the Shuttle or persons by the shuttle is an almost impossible task. In the same room as the shuttle are posters with information on each and every launch since it's inception. There is also a gift shop at the nose of the shuttle that you exit once you leave the shuttle area. You can spend as much time in the Endeavor showroom as you'd like until it closes at 5:00pm. Photography and video-recording are allowed. You may take in back packs (subject to search) and food and drink are not allowed. I got to spend from about 2:00pm until 5:00pm looking at the shuttle and it wasn't enough time for me as I am a space buff. The earliest you can begin your viewing is around 9:30. Once you leave the Shuttle showroom, you can not return unless you make a second reservation. So if you are planning on taking in each and every detail, reading all the provided materials, watching the video's and looking though the gift shop you'll need a time early, leave for lunch and then a time after lunch. There is a McDonalds at the facility. I would highly recommend this attraction as it is actually similar to the Pacific Science Center in Seattle with an IMAX and attractions that would take an entire day, if not more to see. They have special exhibits, just like Pac Sci, but no need to worry, the Shuttle exhibit is a permanent addition to the California Science Center. read more

I have always been interested in the Space Program and after seeing the Endeavor on her final flight to LA on the back of an airplane in September, 2012, I knew that it was a place I just had to visit up close. I was not disappointed. The Science Center did a nice job with the display. There is an exhibit inside the main center that includes information about all the missions, plus some cool displays (including one on the toilets aboard the Space Shuttle). Once I gained entrance into the pavilion where the Endeavor is housed, I got chills. Looking up at this immense space craft and being able to see the thousands of little tiles that cover it was truly an experience. I enjoyed the timeline of the entire Space Shuttle Program that covers three walls of the pavilion. It was nice to see the shuttles all placed side by side and what the focus of each mission was. The price cannot be beat - $2 to reserve a time. We arrived early enough in the morning (on Memorial Day Weekend even) that we were allowed to go at any time. As the Endeavour carefully rolled it's way through the streets of Los Angeles not long ago, it found it's home here. What a spaceship! and what a great exhibit. See the Endeavour soon, because in the near future they will be moving it a couple of hundred feet, and standing it up in the vertical position, with stairs and elevators to the top. I like it the way it is now, in a horizontal position, where you can see the Shuttle up close and personal. Lots of interesting artifacts are placed throughout the large exhibition as well. This is a free exhibit. When you walk in to the main building, just take the escalator upstairs, make a left and follow the signs to the Shuttle. We just walked in and we didn't get "reserve" tickets. Reserve may be necessary on weekends however, depending on time of year. Lots of parking, $10 per car. PS: When you finish the Endeavour exhibit, there are other free exhibits in the same complex, like Ecosystems, and the tide pool exhibit. read more
