I wanted to better connect with the language associated with my heritage, so I decided to invest the time and money to learn Tagalog. I took the Level 1 hybrid course with Rhya in early summer 2026. Overall, it provided a great foundation for introductory grammar and vocab for Tagalog. By the end of the first course, you quickly become comfortable being able to ask simple questions (like where are you from? what's your name?), answering with affirmative/negation statements, and even being able to ask "how much/how many" with Tagalog numbers right off the bat. The class structure felt perfect, with the small class sizes. The course was very interactive, as we were constantly engaging and practicing the language throughout each course. And of course, it provided a safe space to make mistakes and grow with the language. If we made a mistake, Rhya would walk us through our mistake to help understand where it was and why the correct answer was provided. The class structure was also perfect for my work schedule. There were times I had to travel for work and miss a lecture. Because I was signed up for the hybrid course, I was provided class recordings after each session, allowing me to catch up and not feel left behind. The sessions are definitely catered to working adults, with all courses being offered in the evenings. Each session was 90 mins long each week for 7 weeks. I learned a lot from Level 1, and I'm excited to continue on to Level 2!

The instructor that I had, Keiko is great. She is very patient and always willing to help. (The courses can be fast though depending the language and the books being used). The other people there are always very polite and helpful as well. The facility, while basic, is clean and conducive to learning. They seem to use a mix of media (e.g. slides, Quizlet, etc. which is good). FYI - it is near SJC - San Jose Int'l airport and the jets taking off can be somewhat loud at times.

I am a high school student who is taking Mandarin classes every year in my school, and Ms. Huang…read morehas been an essential tutor for my learning this semester. In our sessions, she customizes the lesson plan to suit my personal goals, practices active speaking drills, corrects my tones constructively, and uses visual associations to memorize characters with their English counterparts. Her teaching styles made it so that my test scores went from B's and C's to constant A's. I ended off the semester with a comfortable A, all thanks to her help. I remember when I was so stressed about taking the final semester exam this year, especially since I failed my last one. Fortunately, Ms. Huang was there to lead me through with custom made questions and advice with common grammar mistakes. Because of her help, I passed with flying colors.

Ms. Huang is not only a very experienced Chinese teacher, but she also possess the talent and patience to work with kids of all different ages and abilities. She is able to somehow make my daughter's Chinese class fun and interesting, so my daughter enjoys going to her Chinese class every time! I can honestly say Ms. Huang has become a very important member of my kids' village of trusted adults, and we consider ourselves so fortunate to have found Ms. Huang to teach my children.

I was concerned about the high school 2 year foreign language requirement, so I wanted to find a summer program for both boys to prepare them for Spanish. I searched everywhere. I needed to find someone who was able and willing to work with each of my son's special needs. When I contacted Spanish Bay Area, I explained our needs to Luis and he responded very positively and began to work with me to put a program together for my sons, which included having all of the lessons transcribed into Braille for my blind son. Luis is VERY organized and structured with his lessons, but he is also very personable and engaging with his students. He set-up the lessons, so that when they were working from a printed worksheet, my blind son had the Braille copy to reference. He was very patient and helpful with my other son, who often has difficulty retaining information. Luis taught in a style that was both engaging and effective for both boys. I cannot overstate what an amazing Spanish tutor that Luis is. He is skilled, educated, organized, caring, personable, trustworthy, engaging, structured, effective, creative and passionate about what he does...he is just a natural teacher!!
