It takes many…read morehands to make a project like this possible; artists and staff, officials and city departments, creatives and tradespeople, businesses, residents, and supporters. Garden of Journey was a project that brought lots of talent, creativity, and vision to this project. One person was not capable of completing a 35 x 110 foot mural without an extra set of hands (or three). So this mural was a combined effort of many local artist, bringing colors and shapes to downtown Providence. The mural brings to the viewer creativity vs destructive energy; fluidity vs geometry; negative vs positive energy. It's a beautiful splash of color in this part of the city,.

Bridges straits and…read morelights The strait between Narragansett Bay and Mount Hope Bay is only about 600 yards wide with a couple of small islands, sand bars and rocks thrown in for interest. A dangerous place to sail through at the best of times and very interesting in foggy or bad weather. So it was recognized a long time ago that some help for mariners would be nice and a small lighthouse was built here in 1855. Only about 30 feet tall and had a small 6th order Fresnel lens that was later upgraded to a 5th order lens. The light not only helped the boats get through the strait but also assisted the Bristol Ferry than ran across the treacherous area. A very useful little lighthouse that did it's job well and prevented many accidents. Then in 1927 the hulking Mount Hope Bridge was built between Bristol and Aqidneck Island so both the ferry and the lighthouse were no longer needed. The huge bridge served as a great navigational aide, as long as the boats didn't run into it or course. The lighthouse remained but since it isn't easy to see from land it was forgotten and slowly fell into a rather sorry condition. Paint was chipping off and it definitely needed so TLC. Fortunately some great new owners spent time restoring the lighthouse to it's former cute little self and now sits proudly under the huge bridge. It's private and never open to the public but good views can be seen from the water or by the landing under the bridge. This is a residential house so don't get too close and respect their privacy. The combination of the looming bridge, cool straits and lovely little lighthouse makes for a very special place indeed.

Continuous Line V (levity), 2022 is a doodle, unscripted, enacted in slow motion. It is made of…read morelengths of thick-walled steel pipe (2-" diameter), which are bent with hydraulic assistance into partial loops and arcs of dynamic radii. The first time I saw it, I was drawn by the bright white steel curves that change perspective with every step. The curved segments were welded end-to-end, organized intuitively to create a continuous line drawing in three dimensional space. The sculpture shifts dramatically with change in vantage point. Its white enamel coating stands out vividly in urban space, while referring to white linear traffic markings, bike lanes, and crosswalks. The artist is Kelly Goff is a Curaçaoan-American artist working primarily in sculpture, installation, and public spaces. Kelly was born and raised on the Caribbean island Curaçao, studied science and art at New College of Florida, and completed his graduate work at RISD with honors. Located at the corner of Broadway and Empire st, it's easily reached by people staying at the Hilton across the street, people that visit the Public Library, a block away or fans that come to the Amica Mutual Pavilion across the street...as well as many others that might just walk by this part of downtown Providence.

College Hill is a historic neighborhood of Providence, and one of six neighborhoods comprising the…read morecity's East Side. It is roughly bounded by South and North Main Street to the west, Power Street to the south, Governor Street and Arlington Avenue to the east and Olney Street to the north. The neighborhood's primary commercial area extends along Thayer Street, a strip frequented by students in the Providence area. We enjoy walking around this area during our morning or afternoon strolls and enjoy the beautiful colonial architecture throughout. The buildings are very well kept and renovated and many of them are part of the Brown University or the Rhode Island School of Design college. College Hill is the most affluent neighborhood in Providence, with a median family income of nearly three times that of the whole city. Portions of College Hill are designated local and national historic districts for their historical residential architecture. In 2011, the American Planning Association designated the neighborhood one of the "Great Places in America". The toponym "College Hill" has been in use since at least 1788. The name refers to the neighborhood's topography and numerous higher educational institutions: Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, Pembroke College, and the since-relocated Bryant University. Prior to Brown University's 1770 relocation to Providence, the area was known as Prospect Hill. College Hill boasts architectural styles from the 18th century onward, including residences and institutional structures. As Providence's colonial core, the neighborhood contains a number of the city's oldest structures. Among these are the Governor Stephen Hopkins House (1707), the Benjamin Cushing Sr House (c. 1737), the Jabez Bowen House (1739), and the John Corliss House (1746). College Hill is particularly noted for its 18th and 19th century mansions, many of which are situated on or near Benefit Street. Among these residences are the John Brown House (1786), Nightingale-Brown House (1792), Edward Dexter House (1795) and Thomas P. Ives House (1803), Corliss-Carrington House (1812), Thomas F. Imagine the Black Pearl except bigger and right there in front of you. The best-named ship was the Gorch Fock II (from Germany), but the Brazilian Cisne Branco had the cutest crew. Exploring the ships requires some ladder and gangway climbing - nothing strenuous, but leave the heels at home. Don't miss the international tents, with free samples and swag: This year we got Gouda from Holland, gummi bears from Germany, a variety of sweets from India, a DVD(!) from Indonesia... There were free performances (we watched women in aprons dancing with rolling pins. huh?). Costumed pirates and wenches also roamed the wharves with pistols and swords. Kitschy but super-fun.

It has been over forty years since a terror attack on a U.S. military facility in Beirut killed 241…read moreservice members. The single deadliest day for U. S. Marines since Iwo Jima in 1945. Nine Rhode Islanders were in those numbers. This memorial, located along the greenway between Dyer St. and the river, was originally dedicated September 2020. An etched photo of each Marine plus a bit of personal information on a plaque below the photo line the memorial. Where was he born? What was he interested in? Who is his family? There are also a couple of info kiosks with details of the events of October 23, 1983 that lead to their deaths. We, as citizens of the U.S., owe these young men, and many, many more like them, who volunteered to protect, our respect. These young men made the ultimate sacrifice. As too many before and after have done. Take a walk through. Look at their photos. Read a bit about who they are and give thanks for their courage and willingness to defend democracy. I don't mean to wax poetic. I believe any young person who willingly enlists in military service deserves respect and honor. This memorial gives a small glimpse into just nine of the lives given.

The memorial honors the nine Rhode Island Marines who lost their lives during the Marine Barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon October 23, 1983. The attack on the Marine barracks killed 241 U.S. Marines, Sailors and Soldiers who were deployed to Lebanon as part of a multinational peacekeeping mission during the Lebanese Civil War, this memorial focuses on the nine who were from our State of Rhode Island

Here you will see a stone from a field where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville PA. Here you will see a slab of granite taken from the wounded Pentagon when American Airlines Flight 77 sliced a hole through it. And here you will see a 6' high steel beam from the World Trade Center towers, destroyed by American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 The memorial stands exactly 9'11" tall and includes a clear plastic marker containing the time line of that terrible day.
