I use to go to Spanky's a lot when I was younger and in my 20s. I miss the old place. I also miss when they use to use stone ovens. Conveyor ovens usually leave the bottom crust soggy and limp. And if you ask for it well done, it just seems to come out burned. I usually never get pizzas now unless they have stone ovens. But I thought I'd get nostalgic and live out some memories. I have had some very mixed results over the years when it comes to quality since they moved into the nicer building. My last visit a couple years ago wasn't great. But I am only going to speak about my most recent visit. The no dine in on certain days will have people walking away. I watched 2 people do this on my visit. Perhaps saving on overhead comes out better than heavier staff. I originally felt my order was quite expensive but upon reassessing what I got with all the bells and whistles (thick and seasoned crust) and an extra sauce and drink, I guess it wasn't horrible. The fountain drinks being 22oz for $4 seems a bit wild to me. But honestly when I get pizza take out I don't normally get drinks and I usually never get breadsticks. But you kind of have to get Spanky's breadsticks. I got a thick crust pizza, realizing that it might not come out so limp in the conveyor oven (I've even had this come out too soggy at other places). I was quite impressed with how this came out. A light crunch to the underside when consuming it after cooking (not driving it somewhere for 20 minutes before eating). I feel even the trip home can lessen the experience of a pizza. This is also another reason some people prefer dine in. I had my truck with a steering wheel food tray so all good for me. The breadsticks as usual were great. I might get regular crust next time to see if it still comes out good which I'm sure is a gamble. Either way I was quite happy with this experience. The star nose pierced girl that served me might also be the prettiest girl I've ever seen in this town. If I could rate a 4.5 I would but I don't get that option. The breadsticks at Spanky's are the bomb-diggity and everyone within 50 miles knows that. Honestly, I go to Spanky's every time that I visit Michigan and order breadsticks to go and without shame, eat the whole order myself. They are magical breadsticks, soft and chewy, covered in crispy parmesan and dipped in cold sweet and chunky marinara. If you live nearby and haven't had the breadsticks, either a. Shame on you or b. never try them because once you do, you won't be able to stop eating them. I give them four stars though because the pizza is just meh. It's good but nothing special. read more

First time I've had Spankys pizza and I'll definitely be ording again. It was absolutely delicious.

Main reason I went there was it was open after 5pm on a Sunday when everything else seemed to be closed. I walked over from the hotel across the street to find out the dinning room was closed. So takeout it was. Less the one star. The pie was good and still hot as I trudged through the snow across the street. Fremont apparently loves it's pizza (there's a lot of pizza locations for such a small town) and this site's pizza was very good and I'd recommend it. read more

It's a great place because you can do a drive thru pick up on an order, but you will pay a premium price for that privilege when it comes to their food. The pizzas are okay for the almost $20 for a large. Their world famous breadsticks are just awkwardly long pieces of twisted bread with Parmesan cheese baked on top. I expected some other kind of added flavor, but it was just a lot of baked crusty cheese that falls off when you touch it with no other seasoning besides butter. I've only gone to dine in twice and they were terrible experiences both times where our food order was screwed up and our table was sticky with an inattentive waitress. I love this place. Know what you are getting. This isn't some fancy gourmet pizza place of wood fired. It's homemade pizza and it's good! My favorite specialty pizza would be the chicken ranchero, but even just a plane cheese pizza is good. Now for the star of the show... breadsticks :) I have been eating this breadsticks since before I could even walk. So many of my family members have worked here as well and would bring them home. I was in the area with no idea what to eat and am a sucker for carbs so based on the pictures of the breadsticks alone, I was in. And they were just as good as the photos promised! Seriously, 100% crave worthy and I'm sad I don't live closer. Although maybe that's a good thing so I don't over indulge, which I definitely would. I was in Fremont visiting my daughter from Detroit. We came in on Friday and 2:00pm. I stood at the "please wait to be seated sign" for 5 minutes never spoke to by the 5 teenagers in the kitchen. Finally get a table but no menus, we came in for the pizza buffet but our server tells us that they breaking down the buffet so we can't get it. Super unprofessional, I'm a server and if our server would have been a little helpful she would of gotten a fat tip. Instead we left. Service and staff were terrible! I would like to point out that Spanky's is one of the cleanest restaurants I have been in! Try the breadsticks! They have a crispy Parmesan topping. Breadsticks are big but you are gonna want 2! When it's 8:00 p.m. in Fremont and pizza is wanted, there aren't many choices. This is the place I chose because it was one that seemed to be favored by locals. The crowded parking lot seemed to augur a tasty pie. What I got instead was a veggie pizza with a dry crust, gloppy cheese and nondescript toppings. OK is right. The breadsticks are yummy indeed, but forgettable. The poor service out weighs it all. Our waitress told us all about the pizza buffet and when we asked, "Do we just get up?" She told is it was closed. Seriously?!? Why try and sell us on it? Also, it creeps me out when servers take your cup in the back to refill it--imagine my momentary panic when ours grabbed a cup from our table and the one behind it. I'm all about avoiding cross-contamination. Nasty! Our family ate at Spanky's the night before and loved it; I think the service really ruined it for us. The food was OK. I consider myself a pizza connoisseur from wayyyyy back...I love a good pie! Also, I'm told I've got a pretty good hand for making pizza. Without a doubt, Spanky's pizza ranks in my top five favorites, NATIONWIDE! What makes Spanky's restaurant better than your typical pizza joint, or some other type of restaurant which serves pizza, is that EVERYTHING I've had from there is delicious...pizza, hot sandwiches (a.k.a. grinders), pasta, and especially their "famous" breadsticks, which are undoubtedly the best I've EVER had. If you like parmesan cheese, and if you get a chance to try the the breadsticks, order them with extra cheese. It is not your typical melty/gooey cheese; the best way I know to describe the cheese (the 'extra' or the stuff that flakes off the breadsticks) is to say that it's thin, slightly crunchy (sort of wafer-like), lightly browned and mildly salty. Or, in a word, DELICIOUS. When we go there, we almost always order the 'family special', a combo which consists of a 16-inch, two-topping pizza, an order of 8 large breadsticks (each is approx.12 inches long) and a 2-liter bottle of pop. They also offer a small buffet of about 8 different pizzas, breadsticks, sauce, and a rather limited salad bar, but I have never tried it. You can even buy take-and-bake pizzas at half the price of those baked in store (the crust is slightly different, not quite as good as those baked in store, but decent). One other thing which warrants being mentioned is their sauce, the sauce used in making the pizza, served with the breadsticks, and on some if the sandwiches. As a rule, I don't like a lot of sauce on my pizza, but Spanky's sauce is SO GOOD (slightly sweet with a bit of visible parmesan cheese) that I often dip my pizza in the sauce which comes with the breadsticks. Finally, in addition to the great taste of the food, Spanky's offers a good variety (something which will appeal to most anyone), decent portion sizes, reasonable prices and friendly, efficient staff. Bottom line, I would recommend Spanky's to anyone! read more

I was in town for business and told that I HAD to visit Spanky's Pizza Shop & Restaurant. Who can resist such a glowing review? I met my client there on a cold, snowy February night and the comfort food was a welcome meal. We shared a full order of breadsticks (there were three of us, and it was more than enough). The reviews are right: definitely get the breadsticks. I also ordered a taco pizza, which isn't something I usually get. There was just something about it "calling my name." It was quite tasty. It came with a side of Pace picante sauce, which I can take or leave, but it was good on its own. The service was very friendly and continually refilled our drinks. My client got food to go, and that was very quick (and even came with additional breadsticks). I would definitely return if I'm ever back in the area. read more

We had an interesting and enjoyable experience at Spanky's. 12 of us were in town for camping/hanging out/attending the National Baby Food Festival in Fremont. The main draw for us is the Adult Baby Food Eating Contest. The prize? 12 months worth of pizza from the local sponsor which turns out is Spanky's. Second place? 6 months of free pizza. So needless to say we finish the competition and find out that we have actually placed second. So we're excited to get free pizza but the reality is that we're all from at least 4 hours away so there is no way we're getting these pizzas. We decided to stop in with our huge group and try it out. After talking to the waitress, we found out that the manager was willing to give us all 6 free pizzas. We were super excited. We ordered some pitchers of pop, had the 6 pizzas, and a couple orders of bread sticks. The bread sticks were fantastic. The pizza was pretty average but I'm not entirely sure if we just received a bunch of buffet pizzas and they have a better/more elaborate pizza available. The server was really friendly and made our experience a memorable one. read more

We ordered a sandwich and their "famous" bread sticks. They told us it would be about 20 minutes and we waited over 30 minutes for a simple sandwich and breadsticks. Learned about this place from my girlfriend who grew up in Fremont, MI. We both met in Alaska and came down to visit her family and was told that I HAD to try Slappys pizza. The breadsticks/knobs are very good, some of the best in the industry but the pizza could use some work. Tried it a couple times and to their credit the pizza and breadstick quality and taste is consistent. Consistent in the bread knobs are delicious and the pizza needs an upgrade. Every time I come back home, I always get a box of breadsticks to go. They aren't kidding when they label them the Famous Breadstix on the menu. I've been getting breadsticks from them for 20 years - and I've probably only have gotten a pizza once or twice...that's how good the stix are.
