Obviously, everyone's results will vary depending on what their strength and weaknesses are, and their individual learning styles. So I'll just keep this to my personal experience. I began studying for the GMAT in August of 2017. I work in non-profits and studied the liberal arts; the last time I did math was AP Stats in high school and I never took anything more advanced than Algebra 2. Thinking about standardized testing, let alone math, still makes my heart race. From the get-go, I knew my work with Dan would be pretty much exclusively dedicated to quant, and that's partially why it was important to me to spring for personal tutoring rather than a class. Wouldn't have made sense to spend my precious time and money practicing verbal, since I desperately needed extra support with math. Manhattan's attention to detail, and that of Dan specifically, helped me transform over the space of a few short months. Don't get me wrong, you have to work a lot.... like 10-15 hours per week for 4+ months... but for me, the hardest part of studying has always been knowing exactly WHERE to focus my efforts, and that's what Manhattan/Dan took care of for me. So all I had to do, thanks to his help, was.... practice. At one point, I scored a 490 on a practice test and CRIED. I am proud to say that last month, I sat for my very first (and final!) GMAT in December 2017 and scored a 720 -- 46 Q (WAY above my target) and 44 V! I had quite a long journey with the GMAT, which spanned over the period of about a year and a half…read more Initially, I took the GRE, and only gave myself about 5 weeks to study for the exam. I reached out to Manhattan Prep to schedule some tutoring time since I was under the gun and I wanted to maximize my learning time. My expectations were far exceeded with Chris Berman. Not only does he know the test inside and out, but after reviewing my strengths and weaknesses he quickly asserted that I should consider taking the GMAT instead of the GRE. I took a practice test cold and scored slightly above what I was scoring on the GRE practice tests, which I was familiar with. Fast forward to a year later, I went to Chris again before taking the GMAT for the second time. The first time I took it, nerves got to me. Chris was so nice as to have an extensive email conversation with me after taking the exam to go over my scores and give me his thoughts, even though I hadn't gone to him in over a year. Knowing I was taking the exam again, I scheduled more time with Chris. I knew going to him to hone in on my weaknesses would give me confidence in an of itself, as well as increase my skill level on those question types I struggled with. I was again under the gun time-wise, and he was great in working with my schedule and making time for me. His ability to laser in on what each question type is really simplifies what you're looking for when you get each question. This helped me immensely with the critical reasoning, which I sometimes went around in circles with on the hard question types. More than this, Chris has a way of imparting wisdom in metaphors that stick with you. He noted my weaknesses and told me a few anecdotes and sayings that I literally repeated in my head on test day and made the difference between me staying on track time-wise and taking too long on certain questions (I tend to want to double/triple check that I have a question right, which you cannot do on the GMAT). Overall, it's not only Chris' ability to hone in on what you're weak in, but also his outlook on the test and his knowledge on strategy that really makes him invaluable. The private tutoring is an investment, but I couldn't have been happier with it. My initial practice test was a 620, the first exam I got a 640 (nerves) then I got a 700 the second time, which was my minimum goal score. If I had more time before applications, I would take it one more time to try to get in the 730 realm, but I'm happy to have gotten in my goal range, and Chris was crucial in getting me there. So I guess this is a first person experience. Primary Source document of Yelp. The classroom was well air conditioned, and had water and tea which were provided thirsty students. It was a normal classroom, with tables, chairs, and a whiteboard. The class had about 10 kids- therefore everyone had one-on-one experience too. Even if there were more students, I'm sure Chris or whoever teaching would still do the same... they really tried their best to teach. The SAT course was 7 weeks, 3 days a week, 4 hours each day... However during the last 2-3 weeks Chris extended it to 7 hours, it was optional. But I was really happy that they always allowed me to come in on another day or stay after, if I ever needed extra help...Pretty flexible people. But we focused on Reading Comprehension, Grammar- sentence structure mostly-, Math, with Algebra, Geometry, Word problems, and Trigonometry. Also a little on ACT, but mostly SAT stuff. Worksheets were given, at times it would be done individually or with in groups, or as a class. Questions were ALWAYS answered. At the end of each week they gave a Practice test to see your progress, scores were given afterwards of course. (Since the class was long they gave breaks in between, many people went to the donut or sandwich shop nearby. I like the sandwich shop, they're really nice and family like). Well all in all, I'd definitely recommend this place to anybody willing to try and work hard, because they will do their best to help. My first grader attended the 2024 summer program at Young Scholars Academy ("YSA") and now attends…read morethe writing class during the 2025 school year. She has always been a pretty good student, but YSA has made her much better. It's as if she is a different student now than she was before that summer, especially with confidence in writing. She has learned so many things so organically that it was fun for her. She also has amassed a notebook of "beautiful sentences" (her words) that she constructs each week for YSA and from which she later picks and chooses phrases for poetry/creative writing. This has directly led her to win awards at national literature competitions, which I don't think she would have done had she not been in YSA. What more, she has made friends at YSA through the entertaining field trips and Fun Fridays. She was the new girl, but the kids attending YSA were all very kind, friendly, and generous. My daughter didn't want the summer to end! And I can't say enough good things about her teachers and Ms. Esther, the director. The teachers at YSA are creative and detail-oriented, and they give the kids so much individualized attention because the class size is so small (6 to 8 students per teacher). Then there's Ms. Esther, who you can tell from the start really loves kids and cares about how they are doing. She knows each student by name and who their parents are, she regularly sends detailed texts and photos showing how the kids are doing, and her interaction with each child is colored by warmth. For example, she thinks so much about each child's well-being that she will gently move children into the shade at lunch lest they get too much sun (such a mom thing to do but so bracing to see when someone does it for your child). She also makes sure that they wash their hands at the right times, that they have all their belongings with them, and that they eat what their moms want them to eat before rushing off to play. Wow! The children are taken care of so well--physically, emotionally, and academically. Overall, YSA is superb, and I will sing its praises to no end.

Miss Esther is always positive, flexible, and easy to communicate with. Her teachers did a good job of connecting with our son and motivating him to keep learning and developing. Things went well enough that we made a request for a series of special, private sessions to prepare my son for the written portion of the Whitney HS admissions exam. Miss Esther and her team worked out a schedule over the course of a month, and our son felt very confident and prepared for the exam. He felt good both before and after the test and ended up earning admission to Whitney! We are appreciative of the care and investment that the YSA team made in our son. The only benefits I saw, at the time, were 'shortcuts' to answering questions on the SAT and the one on one college counseling / essay writing with Julian Chou. Everything else felt like a waste of my time. I came to summer boot camps to make friends, some of whom I still keep in touch with. Looking back, all of that went a long way. Sure, some might argue it's not worth the money but it really depends on how the student takes advantage of all the resources. I certainly didn't take advantage of all of them but all the instructors are specialized in specific subjects and are quite knowledgeable. Some of these instructors already have full time jobs yet they take their time during or outside of Elite classes to help students. If you can study independently, props to you but most high school students can't. I couldn't. And in this way, Elite was very helpful, using both former and original test questions to evaluate how you'd score on a real test. I enjoyed all my teachers (few whom I still keep in touch with) and the staff, yes they were mean. They were too direct and condescending. However in retrospect, considering how annoying I must've been, imagine that multiplied with hundreds more. Elite wants their students to take practice tests as if it's the real setting. You can't talk, text, or cheat and you shouldn't fall asleep. I attended Elite about 10 years ago. I wasn't close to a 2400 nor did I get into an Ivy League. But considering what I've achieved since then, I can't thank them enough for prepping me for that very first step to 'adulthood': college.

Math was not my forte, yet the tutors of MTG were able to make difficult mathematics concepts easy to understand through helpful explanations and extra practices.
