I was recently at The Columbus Square bowling alley, spending time with friends, when we witnessed yet another disturbing incident involving Sparks Security. This time, it involved an elderly man and woman, accompanied by what appeared to be their middle-aged son. Unfortunately, this was far from an isolated event--it seems that such incidents with Sparks Security are becoming all too common. Frankly, we are fed up with seeing these so-called "security guards" at the bowling alley, pretending to be something they clearly are not. To begin with, Sparks Security personnel are neither employees of the bowling alley nor police officers, despite the way they carry themselves. They walk around with an inflated sense of authority, acting as though they have the power and training of law enforcement. In reality, these are just low-level, overzealous "rent-a-cops," who seem to think that their poorly earned badges and uniforms give them the right to exercise authority they do not have. Their behavior reeks of desperation, as if they're trying to compensate for their obvious failure in all aspects of their lives. They present themselves as something they're not, and it's becoming more and more intolerable. The situation on Saturday evening was no exception. What started the altercation was unclear, but we witnessed a shocking display of power abuse. Around five or six security guards surrounded a small group of three people--two elderly individuals and a middle-aged man. What happened next was absolutely appalling. Instead of attempting to mediate or deescalate the situation, two security guards--both wearing glasses--took it upon themselves to escalate the matter to a physical confrontation. They shoved the middle-aged man, and shockingly, they shoved the elderly woman to the ground with no regard for her well-being. The arrogance and lack of professionalism on display was hard to believe. What made this even worse was their constant threats of using mace, which only served to heighten the tension and aggression. It was evident that these so-called security guards had no real understanding of how to handle conflict appropriately. Their behavior was not that of peacekeepers but of bullies, exercising unnecessary force on people who were clearly no threat to them. The only thing they were doing was disrupting the peace and causing an even bigger scene than what had originally occurred. In such situations, the appropriate course of action would have been to call the police, especially if they felt the need to intervene physically. Instead, they overstepped their bounds, misused their authority, and caused harm to those who were completely unprovoked. These individuals are incompetent and unfit for the positions they hold.
