I was skeptical when I first walked into this store, as the first products I saw just looked like cheap-ass stripper gear. But given that my BF had just been shopping in here and raved about it, I kept my mind open. You can probably really just skip all the skanky clothes up front and head directly to the backroom, where all the Good Stuff is stocked. Yes, they have the ubiquitous products trying to make a buck off the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon, but there's also serious sexy and kinky goods back there. The prices are pretty reasonable, too. I still sometimes prefer to just buy my toys from Amazon, but there are some things that you really want to see and touch in person before buying. For that, Spartacus is your place. The staff are helpful and friendly, but not overly so. And they have a stamp-card, and if you buy a certain amount ($100, I think?) You get $20 off your next purchase. Score. read more

You know what I like in a sex shop? Cleanliness, good lighting, and cool staff. Spartacus has all these things in spades. They're a bit on the pricey side and sometimes don't have as great a stock as they should (you're out of Hitachi Magic Wands? Went in today to evaluate one and make another purchase. The staff are indeed amicable but can be woefully naïve about their stock. I described one item to a staff member (Referring to the item in the next room and she told me they had nothing like it). Was shocked when the price was triple what seemed reasonable. The lube at $20. is ludicrously overpriced at $17. Making the three dollar "I won't come back to Spartacus" tax that much more painful. For most of the stuff they're selling, Fantasy Warehouse just 4 blocks away, has MUCH savvier staff (Learned a LOT more about stuff @ Fantasy). Prices are a bit lower, professionalism is much higher, and you don't feel like yer being constantly monitored for shoplifting. Oh, and they're open 24 hours (The booths are gone). If yer goin to Spartacus for leather. Speak to a savvy leather enthusiast. Not many PDX ventures feel "Small town." Go to a major city or catalog. the price will be the same and the finish superior. Spartacus has a satisfying selection of corsets and lingerie. My poor broke self couldn't afford much, but I was able to spend a diverting half hour or so browsing the body stockings with my husband before finally picking two. The back room has a number of toys and lubes, tastefully displayed. My only real complaint is that many of the vibrators weren't charged/plugged in, so I wasn't able to test out any of the models that caught my eye. I had to come because I've bought a couple Spartacus products before. The store has a surprisingly large section of women's lingerie. I came for the toys and Spartacus products. The toy selection is pretty vast, Spartacus specializes in small leather and accessories so don't expect big full leather products. I'm giving this 4 just because this is a place that has some things you won't be able to find anywhere else in town or in a convenient location. As others have said, this is primarily a fetish shop but not limited to that. They are rather pricey, but again some of those items are hard to find elsewhere (but things which aren't are still pricey). The store feels safe and well-lit, and the staff is really nice and I've had some actually tell me to not bother spending money on something, then telling me a cheaper way to go, which I always appreciate. The stock is somewhat limited, and I feel they'd be well served to expand stock and their adult/fetish section into the front of the store, though this would cause far fewer to come in for a lingerie browsing I'm sure. All in all, I'd go there if you need something you can't find somewhere else, or to just browse around to find that something you can't find elsewhere. read more

Reading prior reviews, I don't think Spartacus has been given credit for being in the same location and operating for 25 years now in PDX. If you are from PDX you know that it is somewhat of an icon on Burnside. It has really evolved into a boutique style store and as other reviewers stated, it is not Fantasy or Castle. But that is why I like it. They have re-done the layout of the store, so it is much easier to browse items. I don't think their prices are expensive but competitive. Anything BDSM related to leather, is going to be expensive because it is leather. The clothing and shoes are very current. They have these feathered lingerie items that are very unique. Also they carry Uberlube, which is a high quality lube, mostly known in the sport industry for now, but I think they are on to something. My brother in law uses it for chaffing when riding his motorcycle during his 4-5 hour races. Great product. I would recommend stopping in if you want something different. They do a wonderful job of moving stock so when I stroll by every few months or so, it is always fresh. read more

Can't believe I'm writing this, but hey if you're reading it, you're just as much of a weirdo as I am. I had an absolutely fantastic experience here. It took me 15 minutes to walk around the block before I could muster the courage to come in here, but it was so worth it. This isn't your walmart of sex shops, the selection is on the smaller side, but curated. There is a spread of mens clothing as well, and all of the dirty stuff is in the back, phew. However, my favorite part of my shopping experience was the staff. I was greeted in a super friendly, welcoming manner, and the gentleman who helped me was patient, funny, attentive, and gave me space when I needed it. He was also impeccably dressed. When he walked me through the lube section, he was more like a perfumer at Jo Malone, going through ingredients, safety, and even taste...except instead of making you smell nice, these little vials help you accomodate large penii. With the help of another sales associate, I discovered and fell in love with the Maison Close line, which I had never even heard of prior to visiting Spartacus. Gorgeous, French lingerie at affordable prices? Suck it La Perla. As I got to know the lovely gentleman better, I learned he was married to a woman. Seems like a minor detail, but I have to say, this was more fun and WAY less creepy than when I bought my car, went to Home Depot, bought gum at a convenience store, etc...It was also nice to hear a man's perspective as well as a couple's point of view. And to top it all off, as he was ringing me up, he let me know that Spartacus started off as a leather company, so their in house leather products carry a lifetime guarantee. I shopped for a pair of leather shorts today, 4/25/15. I bought a pair of medium shorts for $95.00. I brought them home and the waist size turned out to be a small 28". I called to see if I could exchange them for a larger size and was told no. I realize all sales are final, but this was a total waste of my money. I went into Spartacus recently and noticed a lot of changes! The store has club wear, lots of choices for hosiery, lingerie and accessories. There were some plus size choices which I was happy with. Lots of eyelashes and accessories too! The over 18 area was fully stocked with everything you might need from fetish items to toys, lubes and so many fun things!! Its a really shitty business practice to sell sex toys that have been opened and handled. I just bought a fleshlight and when I got home, found that the package had been ripped open and then sealed back up by Spartacus with packaging tape. I could see through the package window that the toy cap had been removed, which leads me to believe that the part of the toy that touches the genitals had been fondled when it was open. Gross. The sales representative on the phone told me that it is their policy not to offer returns or exchanges after the item leaves the store, regardless that it was 20 mins after the purchase time, besides, he said that ALL of the fleshlight boxes in the store had been opened, so I would not have even been interested in an exchange. This is plainly unsanitary. My previous experiences with Spartacus have been positive, but this will be the last time I patron this store. "Disappointed" isn't even the word to describe how I felt exactly after leaving this shop. Like many others, I have worked several jobs involving customer service and can attest to bad experiences with strangers but literally shit talking customers after them leaving in the presence of other customers definitely doesn't make anyone comfortable. Not only that, apparently needing a fitting room is too much to ask for. Already, my boyfriend and I felt uncomfortable and definitely didn't feel helped with anything but we still decided to try on another outfit. After the girl who only stayed behind the counter was done trash talking the previous customer, she decided to go to the break room complaining of feeling sick. I asked to try on the garment but was informed by another employee of not being able to due to the possibility of stretching the fabric out. I understand the rule of latex being stretched but that outfit was definitely not latex. I'm also not a large person SO perhaps the employee made a mistake and thought it was latex or simply didn't want to bother getting a dressing room for me. Two stars is fairly generous considering this experience and I am not saying I'm a know-it-all but I 100% did not feel good in this shop and am always fairly upset with the size choices always being super large, small or ...smaller and those employees only made me and my boyfriend end up not purchasing anything and wanting to leave, which we ended up doing.
