This library was okay overall, but it felt pretty outdated compared to other libraries I've been…read moreto. It's also fairly small, so there wasn't much seating for adults wanting a quiet place to sit alone and read. I didn't notice any study rooms either. The employees were friendly though, and parking was decent.

Nice location though quite small for the population size. I used this library a lot when my kids…read morewere growing up as I love libraries. There's a part for the children, their books, computer games, even games (puzzles, checkers, etc) and close to the bathrooms and front entrance. The adult section has a few tables and very limited private room, and a conference room plus a meeting room. I had a conference call and fortunately was able to fill out the application form immediately for usage, but could use it for an hour since another person had it reserved afterwards. Free WiFi, copier machine if needed. There are public computers if you don't have your own. It IS crowded and the new one that opened up is a lot bigger and brighter due to windows. This is darker and not sure why, but libraries are no longer quiet so if you are easily distracted and don't want noise interrupting you, try to reserve the private room and/or bring headphones. Yet, great location as I was able to stop by on way home for work and join this meeting while looking at my laptop, etc. The staff is excited that they are slated to get a larger building in the future.

The ugly truth is that College Scorecard.gov online reports that only 12% of SMC graduates are…read more"making progress" repaying their loans. 12 out of every 100. SMC reports that 93% of BA graduates are "employed or in grad school within 6 months of graduation." This seems very misleading. Employment could easily mean the same part-time job students had prior to graduating. Many SMC students are already working while in school. SMC is likely not make any guarantees at all about full-time, well-compensated employment. It seems impossible, therefore, to tell just how many SMC graduates are underemployed, if they can even locate a full-time job at all. Two top employers of SMC students in the past few years (per LinkedIn) appear to be Walmart and the US Army, neither of which require a college degree. Please do not fall for the allure of college athletics at SMC either, as there is high turnover among college coaches. Every May or June, SMC seems to hire 5 or more new coaches due to yearly resignations. It's possible your child may have multiple different coaches no matter the sport if they remain at SMC for 4 years. More than 60 faculty/staff/coaches have resigned in the past 7 years. Area safety is also a concern. Google "shootings, West Spartanburg" (where SMC is located) and you'll read page after page of new stories. 3 campus lockdowns during the past 2 school years and a campus safety officer shooting death last year on campus on January 1st (the 2nd in a 10-year span of time). SMC has still not reported the campus security officer shooter's name or released officer camera footage from cameras the school sought for officers following the 2015 shooting death on campus. Roughly 56% of SMC students are students of color last year. The current president and a cabinet of 10 senior leaders who "serve at the pleasure of the president" appear to be 100% Caucasian. How can this be in 2025? Folks outside of South Carolina may have their own guesses that differ from those on site. Who profits from only 12% of graduates "making progress" repaying their loans with two years of starting repayment? Overwhelmingly, the presidential cabinet members, many of whom live in nice houses at a significant distance from campus, of course, and especially the college president (who earns more $$ than Spartanburg County Sheriff, Spartanburg City Manager, and the Chief of Police per year -- see Propublica). SMC's mantra seems very much to be "be nice to the students and pass them so long as they turn in any of their work (because tuition money is needed for us to get paid, y'all)." The college invests its money heavily in social positions on campus rather than highly accomplished professors. Professors' credentials appear purposefully omitted from SMC's website. One theory is that some of them are not as qualified as those teaching at the much cheaper Spartanburg Community College or private high schools. Altogether, don't fall for the gift of (sales) gab or the professional development pitch. Now that Limestone University has closed, SMC appears to have the lowest debt repayment "making progress" percentage for students among all colleges or universities in South Carolina north of Columbia (check for yourself at CollegeScorecard.gov). Altogether, SMC seems one letter shy and a shuffle from SCAM. Published data suggests this college experience may leave you sunk in student loan debt for a lifetime.
