Had the worst experience ever with Special Needs At Sea. Rented a scooter for a cruise. The scooter worked for 1 day then it would not hold a charge. Called the emergency number on the scooter with guest services on the boat. There was only 1 thing they had me try. It did not work. Had to have my daughters and some crew members push me to an outlet multiple times during the cruise to charge. Would only hold a charge for 2 hours. Called company was told it would take 7-14 days to hear from them. Did not hear from them. Called my credit card company and they had me send an email. Special Needs answered my email claiming they "tried to reach me and left a vm". They did not. They also said they checked the scooter and there was nothing wrong with it. They accused me of not charging it nightly. It charged all night long every night. They also claimed they talked to the cruise we were on and that they told them. I had no issues. Are you kidding me I called you during the cruise. I will never use this company again. Horrible. read more

I was at first impressed with the responses that I received, and the fact that they would deliver the roller-walker to the hotel and then pick it up from the ship when we completed our cruise. The cost was a bit high but at this point the convenience seemed to be worth it.......shortly I was totally wrong in that idea. One of the things the asked was the height and weight of my husband. 6'4" and 220 pounds. Fine they said, no problem. we have two walkers at home and they are just fine for him, but ...just wait. We get to the hotel and were told the roller-walker was there. I took one look at it and said, OMG, that's a child's walker! I am 5'4" and it was ok for me, but for a 6'4 person...no way. OK maybe it was adjustable. the arms were (about 2 inches) and the legs.....no! they were not adjustable. As soon as we got into our hotel room I called them assuming they had sent the wrong walker. No they insisted, this was the standard roller-walker? Standard for who? definitely not a 6'4" person. If he tried to use it he was bent over like a cripple. Because we pad prepaid , we took it, thinking maybe someone else on the cruise might need it. nope! It sat in our room the entire time, unused. While on one of the tours I noticed another gentleman using a walker who was all bend over, he also was about 6'4" and I asked him...you didn't by any chance rent that from Special Needs at Sea, did you? He looked at me and said...how did you know? Yup! That's were it came from, another travesty. He was totally disgusted about the whole situation also, said his wife made him try to use it, but it was better not having one at all. So unless you are 5'4" and lie and say you are 6'4", you might not get something that works. I would definitely stay away from this company. It is not reliable and doesn't know what people need, just give you anything they happen to have in stock. read more

This company is very responsible. Upon arrival on the ship the scooter was waiting for us in the room. They also keep spares in the ship in case of incidentals. We had a bad experience with a previous company that for that reason is no longer in business, but we only have to say good things about Special Needs at Sea. read more

I do not recommend Special Needs Group (AKA Special Needs at Sea) for medical equipment rentals. https://www.specialneedsatsea.com/ My experience with this company was extremely disappointing. I visited their website and initiated a rental request for an electronic scooter, understanding that my card would not be charged until availability was confirmed. However, just ten minutes later, I received an e-signature document, a rental agreement that I was expected to print, sign, and bring with me to pick up the scooter. The email stated I should click the button to review and sign the agreement. Crucially, I did NOT sign this agreement. Despite this, my credit card was charged $265. When I immediately called to cancel the request (to free up the scooter for someone else), as my husband decided we should just take our scooter, a representative named Shella informed me that they would only refund $215, keeping $50 as a cancellation fee. This cancellation fee was never disclosed to me, and I had not signed any document agreeing to it. I never received confirmation that the equipment was available. To add to the poor experience, the representative was unsympathetic and unprofessional. Based on this experience, I strongly advise against using Special Needs Group for your medical equipment rental needs. I have had MS for 42 years and though I can walk with a cane and my husband, it has been difficult for me to walk the distances required while cruising, which is our favorite hobby. I was told about Special needs at Sea by the staff at Carnival cruise lines, called them and reserved a scooter for an eight day cruise from Tampa, FL to the Panama Canal. The scooter was there at the Tampa port when we arrived. There was absolutely no problem getting the scooter or using it on the ship. When we returned to Tampa, the scooter was just dropped off where I got it initially and we drove off with no problem. The scooter fit through the door with no problem and was easy to use during the cruise. I was very satisfied with the scooter, the service, and the value for the price paid. I highly recommend Special Needs at Sea and have already reserved a scooter for our next cruise in August. read more

i was injured on a cruise and needed to rent a scooter. They were closed on weekends and guest services could NOT get ahold of anyone so I signed an agreement because I needed a way to get around the ship. Guest services said special needs at sea would send me an invoice. i did not receive one after 5 days so I went down and requested guest services to contact them I then received an invoice and it was double the amount had I rented it prior to the cruise. I then called special needs at sea when I returned home and they said since it was returned internationally and that's the higher cost. Their scooter malfunction the second day and I was give a different scooter from a different company yet charged the higher amount from this company. Extreme price gouging at its finest!!! read more

I had knee surgery in April and needed to use a walker for my cruise the 8th of Dec to the 18th. My TA made arrangements with this company for me. The walker was supposed to be left in my cabin but when I got to the the cabin. It was sitting outside of it for anyone to take. It didn't even fit through the door. A shoestring is what we had to pull up to collapse the thing which didn't stay folded up at all. The seat fell through it cause it to be hard to carry. The left hand break didn't work at all. Making it hard to go down steep hills slowly. the bar across the front with the rubber padded came apart when you tried to lift it to go down stairs. The thing was rusted. What a waste of money totally useless. Don't rent from this company. read more

Required a mobility scooter for a cruise on April 9, 2023 due to a knee injury while awaiting surgery. Rented from this organization and am pleased with the ease of the entire process and the quality of the scooter. Boarded Celebrity Beyond on the 9th and the scooter was already in our cabin at 11am. The scooter performed well, was easy to maneuver and helped me explore the ship with ease and no issue. Additionally, the return process was easy as all that was required was to leave the scooter in the cabin when we disembarked. I highly recommed this organization for reliabilty, quality of product and ease of the online rental process. I did notice that one of the small wheels required to navigate over the cabin threshold was in poor shape but did not deter from the overall experience. Will definitely use their services again if necessary. read more

I had used special need group at sea back in November of 2022 and had no problems. so I would use them again for my cruise in April of 2023 . it was nothing but problems from day one. my spouse got stuck on the 15 deck and I had to push the scooter to the closest outlet to charge, thinking it wasn't fully charged upon our arrival. after charging it overnight . the next morning he took it to the buffet for breakfast and then returned back to the cabin just to get stuck in the elevator with a dead battery. I had complained to the cabin steward and guest relations. they said they would contact special needs to see what can be done. special needs said they would call me directly which the never did. after getting back on land I had called them and made a complaint . They told me they have 14 days to investigate this complaint. After the 14 day they called me at the wrong time. I had a 101 temp and was heading to the hospital with a stomach virus . She continued to say they cleans the scooter up and sent it onto a client and they had no complaints. So one that note they can only offer a 50.00 dollar credit on my next purchase. I feel this is a bad way to do business ! I will be looking for a different company. read more

SCAM ALERT - THIS COMPANY IS PREDATORY AND FRAUDULENT. If I could give zero stars, I would. I rented a scooter from Special Needs at Sea for my mother, who was cruising with my aunt to celebrate the end of a brutal year of radiation and chemotherapy. As you can imagine, the scooter was key to her being able to move about the ship and enjoy her holiday. Unfortunately the scooter died two hours after embarkation and Special Needs at Sea was not only completely unhelpful, when my mom called for guidance, they suggested to her that they wouldn't be able to begin an evaluation of the issue until my mom brought the (non-working) scooter down to the guest services desk. When she pointed out that if she were able to push a scooter across a cruise ship, she wouldn't need one, they *helpfully* suggested that "it'll be easier if you take it out of gear first"! Gratefully, the ship had a scooter that they let her borrow. Upon trying to get a refund, these fraudsters refused saying that since she got to use *a* scooter, their end of the bargain was fulfilled, even if it wasn't their scooter. Livid doesn't begin to describe my state of mind. This company is a scam that preys on folks with special needs. read more

At the port, the Special needs person (Tracy) asked us if we want to upgrade to a scooter for a $50 add'l fee. We agreed. and they charged us $75 in addition to additional $50 as agreed. when I called them, they said I also agreed to pay additional $75 as it was a last minute request. I was not told of this when I rented the scooter. this is a rip off. and I would not recommend it to anyone as it is a fraud. read more

I rented a scooter for our cruise on the celebrity reflection. Scooter was in cabin upon arrival. Made our trip much more enjoyable. ONE THING THE COMPANY DID NOT MENTION WAS THAT YOU MUST UNPLUG CORD FROM STEERING COLUMN TO USE SCOOTER Just a tag would have helped as if you do not unplug from column ,scooter WILL NOT work. If I could leave zero stars I would. This is a completely unreliable company. DO NOT USE! We arranged to rent a full size crib to be delivered to our cruise ship. We received confirmation however when we arrived on board the crib was actually a mini crib. Our daughter is much too large for a mini crib and nevertheless the cruise ship would have provided that for free. We called to report the problem and have a full size crib delivered. The office was closed and we left a voicemail. We also emailed as we were in a panick about where our daughter would sleep for the next week. It is now 3 days later and we just got an email response that a claim has been submitted and we will get a response within 7-10 days. Obviously that is not a help since our vacation will be over! We got extremely lucky and found another company to rent a full size crib from (for a fraction of the cost of this company may I add). Our vacation would have been completely ruined otherwise. We are now on our cruise with this extra crib folded up and taking up space. We also now have to deal with returning the other crib. The absolute lack of care and service from Special Needs Group is completely unacceptable. read more

They will provide a credit with a bonus, but for many people who use their services, future cruises will not be option. I have used special needs for the last 6 years and they are amazing. I have nothing bad to say. My first time I needed a scooter we were already at sea. My husband went down to customer service and customer service connected us to someone at Special Needs and I was able to get a scooter while at sea. They helped turn a bad uncomfortable situation into the best vacation I ever had. I now call up and reserve my scooter as soon as I book a cruise and we cruise every year. read more

My 92 yr. old Mom and I just returned from our MSC Seaside cruise last Saturday. The ship was spotless, the food was delicious, and the staff and crew were exceptionally polite and very helpful. My Mom and I have mobility issues and requested wheelchair assistance to board and disembark the ship. MSC's staff were very accommodating. I explained to my travel consultant that my Mom and I needed a shower bench. We were referred to Special Needs at Sea. We paid $85 to rent the bench for the week. Prior to the trip, I spent time on YouTube reviewing the ship, the Staterooms, and reading reviews on travel sites. I phoned, texted , and emailed my travel consultant regarding my concerns about the size of the bathroom's shower being too small for the shower bench. we rented. In addition, I even requested a room with a bathtub instead of a shower only. She said there were none available and the bench should fit inside of the shower. She assured me that Special Needs at Sea was aware of what size the shower was and would provide the appropriate sized bench. Not so, my friend. The bench was over sized and would not fit inside of the shower. We paid $85 for nothing. To add insult to injury, MSC provides a shower bench to it's passengers, free of charge and it fits inside of the shower. It's a very close fit but at least it fits. I was able to use it, with difficulty. However, my 92 yr. old Mom was unable to use it because it was too close of a fit. She didn't shower for the entire week of the cruise! Please don't inconvenience any future customers with renting a shower bench for MSC Seaside's showers from Special Needs at Sea. It's wasted money, $85. Unfortunately, we will be unable to get our money refunded from Special Needs at Sea. All things considered, we had a lovely trip celebrating my Mom's 92nd birthday with the staff and other passengers on the ship. I am entirely satisfied with my experience renting a Hoyer lift / hoist from Special Needs at Sea Group for our Cunard Lines cruise. The lift was in my stateroom before I arrived just as promised. It was in perfect working condition and appeared to be new. I was very relieved to see if there waiting upon arrival because this piece of equipment is indispensable for me; without it I could not have made the trip. They are located in Florida but have agents in major ports. Their New York agent was right on the ball, on time with the delivery. I think that more people should take the time to review businesses with whom they have had positive experiences. read more

I am sorry to see other reviewers had problems! We ordered a reclining lift chair for my grandmother on a cruise last October (2017) Due to back issues, she cannot sleep in a bed or in a lying flat position. We had wonderful service! We were on the ship very early and the chair was already in her cabin waiting for her! The chair was very comfortable, clean, worked with the remote and served her well for the trip. They showed up to take it away on the last day of the trip when they said they would and we never had to worry about anything! Because of the ungodly price to rent a walker for a 6 week cruise I opted to purchase one. After doing so I changed my itinerary and needed to have it delivered to a hotel the day before instead of delivering to the ship and they wanted an extra delivery fee to do that, nevermind that the price I paid included delivery to the ship. I made other arrangements with someone much more pleasant to do business with and cancelled my purchase but they would not allow it. No cancellation, no return of goods (that I don't have yet), no refund. I don't see that spelled out in the contract. read more

Exceptionally flaky customer service. I called to rent a wheelchair for my mother during a cruise in Hawaii. The representative in Miami couldn't seem to figure out how to connect with his colleague in Honolulu. Phone and e-mail evidently were not viable options. Despite promising to call me back, he never did. When I finally followed up to confirm our reservation, he was long on excuses. He suggested that I rent a wheelchair on board from guest services. I am a travel agent in Delray Beach, Florida and book cruises all over the world and I have been using Special Needs At Sea for years and have never been disappointed. One thing people should know nothing that has to do with a disability is inexpensive and Special Needs at Sea's prices are very fair and acceptable. My son had a wheelchair and the cost of this chair was $14,000.00 to purchase and I know that the piece of Velcro on the strap didn't cost $250.00., but this is the cost of having a disability, as unfair as it may seem, you have to pay the price or you are out of a safe way to travel or being able to sit. This is a convenience for people who are traveling and don't want to drag their scooters, wheelchairs or other pieces of medical equipment with them when they travel which can make it very difficult. Special Needs at Sea takes care of all of the hard work, just call them and reserve the equipment you need and when you are on the ship or wherever you are going, there you are, everything is in your room. So if the price is a little bit more think of; what it saves you in time and dragging equipment around that is exhausting is well worth it. I recommend them very highly and everyone in my office uses them as well. read more
