This collection center accepts various recyclables such as card board, metal, yard waste, dirt/concrete, appliances, and e-waste. They also accept hazardous waste such as batteries, chemicals, motor oil, coolant, oil filters, and paint, etc. Propane tanks smaller than the 20lb size can be disposed here. Styrofoam is no longer accepted. Service is always good as the workers are efficient at unloading hazardous waste and directing customers on where to place the recyclables. All recyclable items are placed into large 20' roll off bins. The yard waste and metal bin is very tall (approximately 6' tall) so it is easier to dispose of yard waste using a truck and standing in the bed to throw the items in. Gasoline can also be disposed here, but if you want to keep your gas can it requires coming back at a later date to pick it up after it has been emptied. I never knew this place existed but my friends told me about it. residents and eligible businesses can safely dispose or recycle hazardous, bulky, and hard-to-recycle items free of charge. They are open Saturday through Wednesday, 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM but Elk Grove residents only. I stopped in because I was looking for paint & I really didn't care what color to paint an old bench. There's Free paint & some other household items. Paint, cleaning products, automotive fluids, pesticides, etc. I mainly only looked at the paint. I found a neutral color & checked out by logging it in at the computer in the back. Elk Grove residents are limited 10 items per month per household. First time to special waste collection center. We have some old sample paint from our house which we need to dispose (opened more than a year old). The process is very easy. Pack everything you need and leave at easy access of your car. Wait in the line (super quick). They will scan your ID and ask what you have for disposal. Stay in the car. They will open the door / trunk and pick it up by hand in person. No need to leave the vehicle at all. Handy if you have the items already in a box / bag so they can just grab it! I really think it should be open 5 days a week: Tuesday through Saturday. Sunday is still the Lord's day and the empolyees should be given the choice of worshiping, though that is thought to be an archaic tradition even though it isn't. The folks who were on duty when I took my hazmat to the facility were efficient and friendly. It's not a glamorous job, but boy is it important! Came to drop off motor oil and house batteries. Going here was quick and finding the location was easy and good instructions to follow while in the car. We pulled up, they askes for a driver liscence and ask what we had. You stay in the car and they get the box out of the trunk. We were on our way. We then went to check the reuse room of supplies. You check in at the computer, get your Stuff you want to take and leave. Suggest you bring your own bag or box. Lots of pool cleaner, paints, furniture spray, cleaner, and bug and garden spray. Went on a Saturday before 12 and it was quick in and out to drop off a broken TV. Drove up and let them know what I had and they open my trunk and unload it and gave them my ID information. I had old paint in my garage that was likely from long before I purchased my home in 2015. I took it to the Special Waste Collection Center. The biz is open Sunday through Wednesday 9-4, closed Thursday through Saturday. There is a limit of 15 gallons per drop off and if you have more, you cam make additional drop offs 3-4 hours later or the next day. I believe this is to stop any commercial drop offs by contractors. This service is free to residents, there is no annual limit. You must bring a valid driver's license or ID card, it will be scanned. The employees are practicing social distancing, wear masks, gloves etc. Be respectful of them. You must stay in your vehicle. Polite employees, very clean facility, quick service, no waiting and conveniently located near 99 at Grant Line, turn right just before the AM PM station. read more

I don't even pay attention to this Special Waste Collection Center in Elk Grove until the food waste containers giveaway in Elk Grove City is happening here. The line was very long last Saturday morning when the city government started handout the container. All families in Elk Grove can get one free container with the driver's license scanned by the workers. No need to get out of your vehicle. The line was moving very fast. I got my food waste bin in less than 15 minutes. Not poor, as so many Elk Grove residents show up simultaneously. They also collect all the unwanted paints, chemicals, other hazardous waste, plastic bags, cardboard, and propane cylinders. Very convenient and easy to drop off those items and keep our world safe and clean. I'm glad very have this fantastic facility close to my house! read more

I'm so thankful our city offers a Special Waste Collection Center. All of our unwanted broken/used items. They accept batteries, light bulbs, electronic equipment, large cardboards, tires, paint, and more!! It's an easy place to find. When you drive into the gate, follow the signs. It's like a big circle! Once you come to a stop sign, whoever is working at their workstation will wave you forward. They will then ask what kind of stuff you're dropping off. Then they will ask you to swipe your driver's license. Once that is done, they'll unload your stuff for you. That's it! You're done!! YAYYYYY!!! ( That's if you're dropping off batteries, small bulbs, printers/computers.) As I drove to exit, I saw people unloading their cardboards. I saw a sign for tires. I drove to the right to exit. You would be instructed to drive to the left to the appropriate drop off station for whatever you have. Overall, a painless experience. There's a place that you could shop for free for paint and such as well. I didn't go in. I'm happy this is here. This location was great for us during a big clean-up of our garage. The former owners/seller had left a bunch of old paints and nasty abrasive products, expired stuff, and other things you can't just plunk in the household garbage bin. Our first visit here, I did find it confusing to know which lane to drive thru. There are signs, of course, but it feels like an adult multi lane version of go-karts if you don't know or pay attention per driving in. Beyond that, yes, they ask for ID and please wear masks. I've dropped off batteries, injectable's, expired medicines and vitamins and styrofoam containers. They ask for ID to confirm residency and then happily take the items. I've never experienced a long wait line and I never have to get out of your vehicle. If you're dropping off injectables and need a new box just ask and they'll give you one for free. I wish all cities had special waste management facilities as efficient and easy as Elk Grove. Their website has a ton of relevant info on when they are open, what they take, and what they don't. With proof of residency in Elk Grove you are able to go and take care of your electronic and hazardous waste effortlessly. Hazardous waste--you can dump one load an hour. Which is pretty awesome given that most other places limit you to one load a DAY and are only ever open one day a week. What's extra cool is that some of that waste gets sorted and put into the Reuse Room where residents can come help themselves to a little bit of paint, fertilizer, etc. I love that the effort is made to use the remains of products, not just dispose of them responsibly. Electronic Waste--same rules. All appliances with circuit boards or heavy metals are accepted, batteries, bulbs, etc. Recycling--the only weird one: you can take 3 loads a month. I find this limitation strange given that Elk Grove only picks up residential recycling waste every other week, whereas many other cities do it weekly. Ah well, not my highest priority since that stuff can be disposed of on a regular basis through our residential waste services, so not a buy deal. read more

Not all cities offer this kind of service and happy to see that EG has a facility that collects special waste and quite a few other waste products. I know that waste collection isn't exactly something you see people getting worked up on Yelp but coming out here is not a pain, which it can be sometimes visiting other places such as the Keifer Landfill. Initially you go through a drive through where they ask what do you have. Oil, e-waste and other hazardous material are moved from your car. For everything else such as inert material, appliances, boxes, plant materials, etc. are dumped at the blue bins yourself. What I enjoy about this place is that it is generally much cleaner than many of the other waste collection places I've been. The waste collectors are extremely helpful and courteous and on the many trips I've been to this place I have not had a negative interaction. They recycle almost everything else that should not be throw in the common trash bin. We brought in all of our fluorescent light bulbs, many old gallons of paint from our garage, an old propane tank, old computer & printer. Never had to get out of car. Drove up & they asked for identification. This center only services Elk Grove City residents. Then they brought a cart out and unloaded everything. Easiest recycling center! Recently my friend Lisa had stopped by there not knowing they had just closed, and somehow locked her keys in her car. They stayed in the direct sun trying to get the car open, and eventually one of them called there roadside assistance as we had no success ourselves. After that her car wouldn't start so they gave her a jump start. What a long day for them! What they didn't know was Lisa had lost her 13 year old daughter in a car accident a month earlier. Facility is very clean and neat, staff are polite, however I drove on a Sunday morning because I was told that's the best time to come by staff. When I got there I was told that they would not take my cardboard because they were full. However as I left I looked into the cardboard container and there was easily enough room for the small amount of cardboard I had. Pretty upsetting to drive across town wasting gas two ways and then being lied to and now having to return again using more gas. read more
