Once I did get an appointment though, it was all smooth. Good service, good prices. I'd give them 3.5 stars if I could, but have to stick to 3 since my initial experiences don't justify 4 stars. When I got started, a staff-member took me to a couple of machines to measure the health of my eyes and get a ballpark prescription. The optician was thorough and really patient, explaining to me at all stages what he was doing.

It was slightly difficult to get an appointment (the first time I called their system was down, so I had to try again twice before they could find me a time...) Once I made it to my appointment I was really impressed. To start with, a member of staff took me to a couple of machines (one blew air into my eyes - to test for glaucoma?), another checked how well my eyes focused to give a rough guide on what prescription I need. After that I got to meet the optician. She was thorough, really helpful and answered my questions about all the tests (I was curious!) She only looked at the machine results right at the end, to compare them to her findings... I didn't feel rushed at all, and it seemed like they tested my eyes in sooo many different ways. After she was finished, she wrote out my prescription, but then didn't charge me for the eye test. I'm not sure why...maybe they had a special offer or something!? After that I spent ages wandering around and trying on different pairs of glasses, but I couldn't find any that I liked, so I didn't buy any from them in the end. Their prices are really reasonable, so I wish that they had some that suited me. Ah well.

The optometrist who does the eye tests is very thorough and is definitely worth waiting for if he is with a customer. I asked when I arrived how long it would take to see the optician because there seemed to be alot of people there. They said they would only know after the next patient. I decided to just wait and after about an hour I was still just waiting. They did not even take my contact details and say they would call me 10 minutes before my appointment. The manager obviously knew there was a queue building. After one and a half hours I asked how much longer it would take and they were still uncertain. I told them to cancel my appoitment because like most other people I have a life and shouldnt be expected to wait for what would soon be two hours. After about a minute I realised that I should wait for my appointment as I had already waisted nearly two hours of my life there. When I asked the manager if i could still see the optician, she said no because there were other patients who were waiting. This was utter rubbish because all the patients that were left had come after me. I believe this optician is in serious need of a new manager who knows how to run the establishment and preferably one who is not so rude. Unless you want to waste a few hours of your life and not even end up seeing the optician I strongly suggest that you do not go to betterspecs.

I write this because of the way they have adapted to Covid. A whole new enlarged Test Room with an actual window and a hi output vent system . All the usual precautions too but I was impressed how much more pleasant the visit is with the appointment system .

I have always had such good, friendly customer service for whatever I've been in for. Was really…read morehappy with the way they polished my 10 year old glasses recently so that they look new again, I didn't know that would be possible. I also like how it's a pleasant experience to wait on the comfy sofa and read a magazine or one of their books. They had an etch-a-sketch too, I can't remember if they still have it, but what a fun, nostalgic way to pass the time if you get there early for your appointment.

Everytime I booked an appointment I had to wait at least 10 minutes because they were unable to handle the lunchtime rush. All three times that I went in I needed to be informed of when my glasses/contacts had arrived at the store and they didn't contact me once. When "a few days" became two weeks I couldn't get through on the telephone to enquire, which was just another hassle. I won't be going back unless I have to!

Like many of the other branches, this branch offers a 30% discount for students (bring your ID card), though you need to get a pair worth above 75 pounds for the discount to apply, which was okay for me as I was looking for one in this range anyway (scratch-resistant treatment on the lens and all). The selection of glasses is reasonable, though if you tend to like a lot of choice, you may prefer to try a large branch elsewhere (especially for designer brands).
