I moved to Los Angeles about 18 months ago from Boise, and every time I have been back in town to…read morevisit I make it a point to hit Terry's for some cheap drinks and some karaoke. I recall being a little sketched out the first time someone suggested Terry's for a post-work drink and a couple of songs. The building is unassuming-leaning-towards-dive-y, which can make it seem a little uninviting. Once I got inside I quickly got over it, as have pretty much all of the people I have brought to Terry's for their first time. There are video games and pool tables in the front of the bar, with the latter almost always occupied. The bartending staff have always been friendly and eager to accommodate as long as I have been going, and having a night out is super affordable there- spend a few minutes looking around the bar, and especially behind it, looking at all the different posters advertising drink specials/promotions/happy hours and it becomes clear you won't have to spend much to have a really great time. The popcorn machine in the middle of the bar is a nice touch as well. It's a decent enough watering hole by itself, but it's location makes it a hard sell if all you want to do is step out for a nightcap or two. Really the thing holding the bar together is the karaoke, which I believe they have going just about every night. It's the main reason I go, and I don't think it's a stretch to believe that's principally why anyone else goes there. Last weekend I gathered a group of my friends and family to celebrate (among other things) my sister's recent nuptials, my return to visit, job promotions, etc. We were in the middle of our standard Terry's experience- a pitcher or two on the table at all times, someone coming over with a tray of whatever random shots were on special at the bar, flipping through the giant books of karaoke songs. The host was friendly enough, and kept things running pretty smoothly. It was a pretty full house that night, with lots of people coming in and out and it was all handled pretty well. For some reason, (and this is the part of the experience that prompted me to write this review) in-between songs the host would scream. Like, scream-o music screams. Sometimes it was in keeping with the filler music between singers (music like Disturbed and such), sometimes it wasn't. It was so loud and obnoxious, and the host clearly didn't notice or care that every time he would scream into the microphone, everyone in the bar would clap their hands over their ears. At one point, one old guy by himself sang a sweet Merle Haggard song and as soon as he was done, the guy was like "thanks, that was Howard singing (whatever) AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHGGGG!!" for no reason. He kept it up all night, much to the discomfort of the ENTIRE bar. Toward the end of the night, when my head was pounding from the constant abuse, I even gestured to him to stop doing it as it was making everyone around me miserable. He looked right at me, stopped for a second, and then screamed louder. And longer. He held the scream for like 45 seconds. Kenny G would have been proud. He drove me, my date, and most of my party out of Terry's a good hour and a half before we would have otherwise left. It was the worst experience I have ever had at that bar, which I count among my favorites in Boise. When I come back to town I will skip Terry's if I know that guy is running the show that night. My rating would have been higher had it not been for that experience because usually that place is guaranteed good times. Seriously, screamo is not cool. It wasn't cool even when it was cool, and that was like 5 years ago.

Some friends and I go here every Sunday. Cheap pitchers and occasional pot-luck. It's a great…read moreplace with friendly staff, owners and regulars.
