For years I have been a patient of the Virginia Mason optometry department and the service was good--although I was somewhat annoyed that every few years when I went for an appointment my prior optometrist had left so I had to see someone new. But what kept me coming back was the eye glass shop, which always had the same people, who always provided me good service. When VM closed the eye shop I was so disappointed. In fact, I was in denial, I had to go see for myself. Sure enough, it was closed. But a hospital nurse helpfully gave me a list of recommendations for other eye glass shops in the area. I visited the nearest one but had an immediate negative impression. The second place I visited was Spex Seattle in what I later learned is their new location in the Medical Dental Building. When I entered the shop I was immediately impressed with the aesthetics of the office and the two staff on duty. They were both friendly, without feeling superficial, helpful without feeling pushy, polished, and professional. I explained the backstory above and that I was carrying with me two pairs of glasses that had each lost a nose mount. One of them immediately took them and said she would be happy to fix them while I wait if I wasn't in a hurry. While she was busy, the other staff member was pleasant and, of course, said she'd be happy to help me look at designs for a new pair. I just wasn't in the mood to shop, though, and she thankfully let it drop and we just enjoyed some nice conversation until I decided I should probably let her get back to work and I went and sat down. A few minutes later the other staff member returned and had fixed both pairs of glasses. She didn't just replace the two missing nose mounts, but replaced all four, "so they would match". And the charge? $0.00 When I get back from my summer travels I will definitely be back. In looking at their website it looks like they are optometrists too, so now I'm thinking of checking to see if they are accepting new patients. read more

I've gone to Dr. Campbell since I moved to the area 40 years ago you make an appointment with him, it will quickly become apparent he truly does care about all of his patients. Almost ten years later, and I'm still going to Ida. I'm back on the "once or twice a year" track because I (once again) don't live in Seattle. I've tried a couple of places in Washington, D.C. -- where I now live -- and my whacky, wavy mess of a mophead is simply at its best under Ida's care. Cuts still last minimum six months, and I don't even have "long" hair! I've lived in D.C. for three years now and after a little more than two years, finally stopped in to see Ida since I was in Seattle for a visit. The doctor was fine. The prices were outrageous. They charged me $118 for one box of 12 Acuvue contacts (a 6-month supply for one eye only). You can buy the same box of contacts online for $30. When I called to ask why, they had no explanation. At this rate, a 12-month supply for both eyes would run you $472. read more

Dr Campbell was recommended to me by a friend that's been going to him for years. He has a ton of degrees and is one of those people that seems to constantly be involved in every conference that has to do with eyes. He's an independent eye dr. and it shows, he keeps on top of everything and is one of the best in Seattle. I did not even have to explain my eye issue at all like I did with other doctors. As soon as I said what surgery I had he knew which tests would work for me and which wouldn't. He seems to have many tools and equipment available in this little shop that I've never seen in other eye places. He can show you all the layers of your eyes, every mountain and ridge. He can even tell if you're diabetic or at risk of diabetes just from an eye scan. The only downside for me was there wasn't a lot of eyewear shape options, most were cat-eye glasses which I'm personally not a fan of. However, he's so exceptional I cannot rate him below 5 stars even with that. They do have some very pretty grey and green glasses there that have glitter in the frames which I loved, so if you don't mind the cat eye shape you may fall in love with those! read more

I walked into SPEX looking for my first pair of glasses. I can appreciate great design, but have little tolerance for the elitism and douchebaggery that envelops it. That place in the Market - I'm looking at you. The folks at SPEX not only went out of their way to help me make this important decision, but they made great recommendations. Tom insisted I try the frames I'm currently looking through, and he was totally right. I get compliments on them daily. The staff there called reps, checked stock at the designer's New York office, and even called their contacts out of state for me to see if they had what I wanted. I could've easily been relegated to PITA status, but these people went the extra mile. I'm sold. The world of high-end optical is rife with stick up the butt syndrome. Spare yourself the aggravation and go straight to SPEX. read more

It's going to be a while before I let anyone touch my hair again.... sigh... It's been a few weeks since I cut my hair and I still can't stop whining about how much I dislike it. My long trademark curly red mane is now a short A-shaped poof that will take a year to grow out. I wanted to like this place so much. The idea of a curly-centricate place really made me smile. Every curly haired girl has their own story of the woes of hair management and having a place dedicated to curls filled me with joy. The recommendation of others with fabulous curly hair styles from there sealed the deal. I can't recall the woman that cut my hair. She was nice, knowledgeable and a great conversationalist. And honestly, I commend her for tackling the tangles in my hair, for that she was a trooper. But I had come in for long layers and some weight off the tresses. She talked me into more, a lot more. I should have just stood my ground and just done the trim but I let her lop off several inches. Enough hair was on the ground to create a decent wig. She kept me optimistic by saying she would ensure I wouldn't have an A-shape to my hair with the cut she was doing. And I really believed her. But sitting in that chair I started to regret my decision and began to talk myself into anything positive about it. I left with my hair half wet and not feeling beautiful at all. I know how poodles feel now when they lose their pretty curls. All I can say is that, at least it will grow back. I do however feel the need to give them 3 stars and most of the other reviews reflect the average experience. It's Tina. She's the woman you need to talk to about your curly hair. I get it. She's a silver fox with stick straight hair and you're second guessing the decision to trust your tresses to her golden shears. Don't. I picked up on her a few years ago from a curly haired website and have never turned back. Even when I moved to Dubai FOR 6 YEARS I wouldn't let anyone else touch these corkscrews. (I get the claim to fame as being the one that travels furthest for her cuts!) Every time I came back for a family visit it's a trip to Tina for the trim. She dry cuts, which I love because I don't have even curls and dry cutting ensures even fabulousness no matter the curl level, and the color I get is always on point and drives the curly effect. Everyone always loves my hair and I owe a lot of that to Tina and her brilliance. Plus, she's LOADS of fun to talk to and gives great hugs! :D read more

Ummmmmm, holy knock me out of the park with a wonderful eye exam! I have never had such a thorough and friendly exam from anyone and I've been doing this for 22 years. Dr Campbell examined every aspect of my eyes with an array of "wonderful toys" to which he also explained their purpose with some sciencey terms and lingo this girl could understand. He was funny and a straight shooter. I have great glasses that I love-he did not try to sell me a new pair. I also had a gift certificate that I had won at an auction and I was commended for my do-gooding rather than snuffed for my gift certificate having. The office was located upstairs in a cozy loft that felt private but not sterile like a lot of doctors offices can be. I was warned this experience was like no other eye exam, boy the rumors were true! I can't believe I'm saying this, but TREAT yourself to an eye exam with Dr Campbell, you shan't regret it! read more

I am thankful for Jen F.'s review. I am mixed, but don't have a relaxer. However, after reading Jen's review I was not alarmed nor afraid to allow Tina to cut my hair. After having Novelle @ Baroque in Tacoma cut my hair and Tina, I've come to the conclusion that a good cosmetologist is a good cosmetologist, period. I'm confident that Tina can cut anyone's hair. She listens and explains well. I also loved that anytime I started to talk about "straight" hair, she coaxed me back to not even think down that road. She did a dry cut on my hair, and in the end, my curly hair was full of body, and most importantly shape. Loved my cut!! The Deva products are okay. I recently moved from a city that had no devacurl certified stylists and my poor curly hair, while I've done a lot of research and generally knew what I was supposed to do was cut terribly and I didn't have the techniques quite right. Walking by on my way to the bus I happened to notice a wall of devacurl products in what looked like an optometry place. I needed some product so I picked some up and asked if they had deva stylists and to my surprise and delight they did. Fast forward To today and I just got a wonderful cut from Tina, who helped me get rid of my triangle head and weighed down curls. Dr. Campbell is great. I went to see him for my first eye appointment in a long time at my wife's recommendation. He is so pleasant to talk to, I felt like I was chatting with a friend rather than being at the doctor's office. Very knowledgeable in his field, you can tell he stays up to date with current research and literature. It's great to see someone who really cares about what he does. The office space is great too, I'm a sucker for neat architecture. The staff supporting Dr. Campbell is wonderful, they had a great selection of eyeglasses. I recently had a pair of glasses break while still under warranty, but they were discontinued, so Spex hooked me up with a brand new pair from a different manufacturer. Not only did the new pair get updated anti-glare coating, one of the staff even drove them over from Bellevue in a rainstorm through terrible traffic so I could get them before Christmas. This is a note of appreciation for the optician that was working on Saturday, August 26th. On day 1 of my Seattle getaway, one of the screws came out of my sunglasses. After going to a couple pharmacies and convenience stores, I could not find one those little eye glass repair kits. Now I finally understand why people don't trust hair stylists. Background: I'm an african american female with curly natural hair. I've been growing my hair out for the past few years. I successfully managed to grow my curly hair past my shoulder (below my bra when straightened). Recently, I experienced quite a lot of heat damage, and decided that I was ready for a hair cut. No, not a trim, but an actual cut. As an avid youtuber fan, I have watched girls get beautiful Deva cuts (specialized cuts for curly hair) and thought I should try it. I walked into the salon with curls that reached past my shoulders. I write this yelp post with hair that barely reaches my collarbone when stretched. The beginning: I walked into the beautiful salon and immediately felt at home. It is tres chic, and the staff is wonderful. I meet my lovely stylist for the day, Tina, and we proceeded to chat. She asked me what I have in mind, and the first thing that came out of my mouth was "I came here to cut *some* of my heat damage and to get it shaped". Tina replied "Yes, cutting all that heat damage off would be way too short and way too much too soon for you". I thought we were on the same page. Now, I should say that I had no idea that I was supposed to come in with my hair already styled curly, yet dry. There was no such information on the site and when the folks at Spex called to confirm my appointment and ask questions, nobody told me this. As an african american female with 3c/4a hair, my curls aren't always poppin like that. So, I came to the salon with stretched out waves. Thus, Tina had to wet the hair a little bit to actually see the curls. That is when it all started to go wrong, but I still trusted the expert and was excited to see what could happen. The cut: After literally just wetting my hair and applying conditioner, she started snipping off the ends. After a few minutes, my hair was getting shorter and shorter, but it was still fine! It was still doable. After a few more minutes, she suggested we "take off some length" from the back. Though I was hesitant, I trusted her. After a few more minutes of snipping, my hair was getting uncomfortably short. I had to remind her that this is not what I came for. Honestly, it was a little hard to gauge the actual length of my hair at the time because my hair was WET and the curls had already began to SHRINK. There came a point when I just couldn't take it anymore and I said "Please, stop. I can't take this hair getting any shorter". She replied "I won't go shorter, plus I think I got all the heat damage off". Mind you, the FIRST THING I said was that I wanted SOME of the heat damage cut. I thought we had an understanding. But, apparently not. She tried to assure me by saying "It's summer. it's time for something drastic". I said "No, that is not what I asked for". She said "edgy is good". I said "I am not edgy person, and not really into the edgy look, so this isn't what I had in mind". That was the end of it. She spun me around and showed me the beautiful cut. It really is a beautiful cut, but not what I wanted and way too short. The end. Let me repeat. All she did was wet (not wash) my hair and cut it. No styling. As I walked to the counter to pay, the girl at the counter, the other stylist, and the other stylist's client gave me weird looks and kept staring at my hair. I asked myself whether it was that bad. But then told my insecurities to hush. I noticed that the other stylist was actually STYLING her clients' hair. She was styling the curls into ringlets with Deva Cut products. In fact, that client was there before I arrived and clearly left after I left. I asked Tina whether styling was a part of the process because again, I didn't really know that much about this whole process. She didn't explain ANYTHING to me in the beginning. She replied "I'm giving you a discount. Most of my black clients prefer the discount over the styling. Also black hair takes forever to dry". I said "But you didn't ask me", and she said "I figured you'd want the discount instead of the styling". I was shocked. She charged me $70. Now, I don't know what the price usually is, as there was no price list around. All I know is that 30 minutes of cutting without washing and styling does NOT feel like a proper experience. Moral of the story: 1. There wasn't enough patient education. 2. The communication was off. 3. My hair was cut way too short. 4. Inappropriate assumptions were made, all of which could have been clarified with communication. I read great things about Tina, and I could see why. She is lovely and warm and a great stylist. But, not only do I feel traumatized at the fact that I lost most of my hair, but I actually feel cheated. They say "never say never", but I'm tempted to say that I would never come back to Tina ever again. And would probably never trust a hair stylist because of this. read more

This review is specifically for Tina Juvonen, who is new to Spex after the closure of Spa Blix (no surprise there - though Tina is and always has been wonderful, the salon was clearly a bit badly managed). Selfishly, I don't want you all to know how amazing Tina is because I always want to call and be able to get an appointment within a couple days. In fairness, though, the rest of you curly-haired women should know that there is a place where you can get a cut that works with and not against your natural curl. No more pulling your wet hair straight and pretending it will stay that way. No more snide comments about how thick your hair is and what a pain in the ass it will be to cut it. No more beauty school dropouts who think they know your hair better than you and dismiss your time-earned advice about what works and doesn't with your texture. Tina is trained in cutting curly hair, and she is experienced in cutting curly hair. She is a master. Finally, Tina gets (and so should you) that getting the right curly cut is often as much about relationship as it is about technique. I think my cuts with Tina would be good no matter what, but they are great because I tell Tina what's working and what isn't, and she listens and gets it and adapts in a way that's totally comfortable and a win-win. read more

About three weeks ago I had my curly hair cut by Traci at Spex Salon. She did a wonderful job and she has inspired me to try the curly girl way of life. I never did shampoo my hair more than twice a week but I now know the sodium laruelsulfate (spelling)? is bad for curly hair and anyones hair. I threw my shampoo out. Picked up the CurlGirl book got some double pronged hair clips and I am discovering new ways to style and treat my hair. I think more people ie salons should rethink the way they cut and style curly hair. It really should be cut dry and in it's natural state. Hairdressers should also try to stop fighting their customer's curls, in the end the client has to wear their hair the way it was cut and if it is bad they are stuck with it for months. Stop denying your kinks, curls, and waves and learn to embrace them. I was fortunate enough to get my haircut by Traci and it was the best hair cut I have ever received. The true test of a hair cut is to see how it grows out. It has been a little over two weeks and it looks like I got my hair cut yesterday. Traci uses the Deva Technique which you get your hair cut dry. Makes sense right! We wear our hair dry, not wet, so why cut it when it is wet. This makes ALL the difference. The amount of attention that is poured into the technique really can change the way your hair behaves. If you've never received a Deva hair cut, you are missing out on life. You will never ever want to get your hair cut by anyone else. Kudos to Traci who contacted me via Yelp, when I found out that Spa Blix closed. That is true customer service. I went to this place for years. Even paid out of pocket when they wouldn't take my new VSP insurance. They were amazing until they sold me Alain Mikli frames and they were defective. I paid like $600 for these glasses. The temples came off after about a month. I told them they were messed up and they ordered new temples from France. I told them that wouldn't work and after about 60 days or so they called and put them on. Didn't work! I said can you glue them or something, trying not to be a thorn in their side. But no! They ordered another pair of the same frames and I was so happy until they fell apart again in a month. So here we go again! They said sorry we can't do anything else for you. I asked to speak to the owner Scott Campbell and they shooed me away. I couldn't believe it. They got thousands of dollars from me and then to get brushed off. Really? I've been a patient of Dr. Scott Campbell for a few years, and he and his office staff are unfailingly professional, empathetic and even cheery. Fact: whereas I've always paid on time, Dr. Campbell does understand the situation of patients with high deductibles, and the billing operative is happy to accommodate my occasional payment quirk of dividing between FSA and immediate cash. Fact: When I had a question about combining a drugstore remedy for a non-optic ailment with my ophthalmic prescriptions, after what I read on the box of the drugstore remedy ("consult your doctor if...") I called SPEX. The yes, empathetic, cheery and professional staff told me Dr. Campbell was not in, he was on his honeymoon, but I could call him. I was, as you might understand, reluctant to bother the good doctor. "You are going to call him, aren't you?" the staff person asked, sensing my apprehension. "If you don't call Dr. Campbell, I will." I'm a very timid person but I called Dr. Campbell on his cell, during his special time with his bride, to ask him this one question. He didn't mind at all! Phew! Fact: I don't like so much the tests I as a special case have to undergo for routine care, but I suck it up and try to be the best patient possible, because I've learned, from physician visits, and accompanying my children to their orthodontic and dental appointments in Seattle, that SPEX is a gold, if not platinum, standard for service and care. Fact: SPEX never forgets to remind me about appointments, and if the appointment needs to be moved, I am contacted in ample time. I can't take this quality service for granted. read more

Don't go here if you have LONG curly hair and you are just looking for a trim and you want to keep a LONG style. I agreed to a 1/2 INCH trim off the ends and a little shaping/framing around the face area, i lost 7 INCHES off the longest layer in the back!!! even more off the shorter layers! The haircuts are expensive but i thought it would be worth the cost to have it done properly by curly hair specialist but it still went completely awry. At the consultation i had been very clear that i hadn't had a 'trim' for a year because the last place i went had turned a trim into a major cut, I asked for a very minimal approach and said I would prefer to come back in a few months and get it trimmed again over any drastic changes that would make me avoid hair salons for the next 1-2 years. Traci assured me by telling me they do 'dry' cuts for curls and that wouldn't happen. I hadn't had a dry cut before so it sounded like a fool proof way to me. Afterwards friends and family took notice asking what happened to my hair. It's not subtle it's a big change and i do not like it one bit it was definately not a trim I could have probably lived with even 2 or 3 inches gone but 7 is quite a lot! I would not recommend this place for long curly haired people if you have short hair, maybe it will be what you are looking for, but long hairs run for your life!! It will take at least a year minimum to get the length back, i'm really sad, as a performing artist my hair was a big part of my 'look' and now it's gone. read more

My first pair of lenses at Spex came in all messed up. They resolved the issue and went the extra mile. Then, after purchasing several pair of frames over many years, I gave Spex a second chance at getting lenses right and I now deeply regret that choice. This is what happened... I recently purchased eyeglass lenses at Spex in Seattle. When making the purchase I stated I wanted "...transitions, anti-glare and progressive; just like last time. I should be on file." The girl behind the counter was getting frustrated with the system and it appeared she was completely unfamiliar with the billing system. She was finally able to process the transaction and asked me if I needed a receipt. I said I did and was handed an un-itemized receipt. About an hour later I received a call from the same saleswoman stating she had under billed me. She told me that she had put the wrong plastic lenses in the quote and it would be about another sixty dollars. I figured she was reconciling the new order against the old and noticed the discrepancy. I returned to the store and she ran my debit card again. The lenses came back and about a week after I had them I noticed they were not transitioning in the sunlight. I called Spex and was told it would be over a hundred dollars more for transitions. I am outraged over these simple facts: 1. Spex does not offer customers an itemized receipt so they know what they are purchasing 2. Twice Spex raised the price on the initial quote and failed to deliver the product I was promised for the quoted price I find this type of business practice alarming and disconcerting. This type of bait-and-switch practice should be illegal if it's not already. What outraged me the most was the way the staff degraded me over the situation. I was told I wanted something for nothing and that I walked in and tossed the frames on the counter, said "I'm on file and I want what I had last time" and then walked out... If you couldn't find my records, as you told me today, you could have gone over the order with me over the phone or when I came in so you could run my debit card a second time! Simply pathetic. UPDATE 9/3/2013 - I feel compelled to update this. I am returning next week for a trim with Traci. The last few months, my hair has never looked so good. It's so much easier to style. I wash less often now because my hair holds it's shape so well. As a result of washing my curls twice a week, it's much softer, more shiny, and absolutely beautiful. Strangers stop me on the street to tell me how amazing my hair looks. I can't recommend this place enough if you've got curl. ORIGINAL ENTRY - Traci did a wonderful job of trimming my curls to keep my hair healthy whilst growing it out. It's a bit shorter (about 3/4"), but that's to be expected. She's the curly expert and I asked her to do what she needed in order to shape it up. I enjoyed getting to know her and her craft, plus the other staff are super friendly and fun. This is the first time I've been to a high-end optometry place. My insurance covered it, and it is an outstanding value.. Spex has great customer service and Dr Campbell knows what he's doing. I went there for three years and never experienced a mishap with the glaucoma machine or any other equipment (as has happened at other optometry places). His staff also gives quality advise on their selection of frames and gladly will hand over the prescription if you want to look elsewhere. I am sad that my new insurance doesn't cover them - because Spex is the best. read more
