There are excellent, loving & professional teachers, the classrooms are bright and sunny. The library and wonderful librarian entice the kids to read, and really developed their love for books. The music teacher is excellent as well. The principal Ms. Engel hires well, keep the school clean and in order. We are truly grateful for the experience, we know there are a myriads of school options in the city for toddlers, but were delighted with our choice and outcome.

The small class size allows for very individualized attention. He is (like many of the students) an uneven learner. He reads and does math way above grade level, but needs help with writing and expressive language (but some children have more typical learning difficulties). Each family is assigned a social worker to meet with on a regular basis, and the social workers also go into the classrooms to work on social skills through "friendship" and "games" groups. There is a "black & white" notebook that goes back and forth every day, providing a means of valuable communication between the teachers and parents. He has met some great friends here, and there is a warm parent community. We can speak freely with each other about our children's "issues" - we're all in this together! So happy we found this little gem of a school! P.S. The Parents' Association hosts a wonderful lecture series on a variety of topics, mostly concerning special needs children.

We noticed our children slipping through the cracks. If you elect to send your child here, you could at some juncture (as we did) meet very large institutional and systemic walls. That approach may or may not be a fit for you and your child. But, respectfully, the processing approach did not work for us and we sought out a more nuanced and individualized education. Our anxiety and the anxiety of our children faded the moment we left. Parents, ask questions and pay attention. Watch out for the signs of passive aggressiveness when you make inquiries. Your children are far too valuable, and your input does matter, particularly in a school where a culture of impersonality that starts in the administration has prevailed and resonated down to some of their affable, yet cavalier, young teachers.

Our daughter is shy, eager to learn, and takes time to be comfortable with new people.  Since the first day of school she adored her teacher, made friends, and seems to make new friends with the other children and staff members every week as she excitingly tells us stories about her day.  She comes home every day with a general sense of pride in what she learned. HWIS really focuses on building a strong culture,  nurturing a childs mind, and bringing phenomenal talent in the teachers and administration to ensure the school itself continue to improve. From graduating class of 2022 not having a year book or pictures and memories of their achievements, to Aug 2022 accepting under age children in the school, having them attend Kindergarten for two weeks before realizing her and her staff screwed up. The main office received medical physical form dated and with proof of child's age that even though, if the birth certificate wasn't provided due to delayed on reordering from the records state department, they were able to track this information, I find the way she approaches issues a major problem, she is not sympathetic, she is cold, rude and has double intentions on all her and her staff do. They are not transparent with parent and withhold a lot of information from parents in order to control or navigate a situation to their benefit. Lucky to say my daughter graduated from there and is now in success Academy HS, but unfortunately to know I have an elementary child in there and one who was kicked out of kindergarten after going to success Academy Hudson yards for two weeks. The employees were in school July and were able to avoid the trauma of a 4 year old enjoying waking up and going to school, to then be told he is too young to attend. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER STAFF!
