My Dad and I went out with Captain Mike this past Thursday. The forecast was an ominous one…read moreheading into the morning, but Mike was ready when a window of opportunity opened for us to get out onto the water. We started by fishing for specked trout and were rewarded by staying persistent on a spot that Mike targeted as a "honey hole". Afterwards we worked our way up towards and area parallel to the Arroyo Colorado. Working our way through some vegetation-covered spits that had unseasonally hugh water around them, we were able to start casting for reds. Within about an hour we had three keepers. Next we headed towards Rattlesnake bay. Again due to the unusually high water (rest of the mainland was flooding with torrential rain) we were able to creep in on some sand covered bottoms. We hooked up on our last keeper red and then decided to call it a day. As it turned out we got to Jim's pier, had the fish cleaned and were on the road after parting ways with Mike but just in time before a heavy storm hit the island. Our timing and trip was perfect. Mike was patient, curteous, persitent, and a good teacher. Exactly what we needed after being away from bay fishing for so long and what's needed in a guide. Thanks again, Capt. Mike. Hopefully we go fishing or try hunting in the next few months or so.

He also cleaned the fish, a few we checked with didn't. While fishing boats can seem small to people who have never been, Mark's boat was big enough for 7 of us including him to move around the boat and have places to sit. He did all the baiting, casting and cleaning. If we wanted to cast he let us and gave lots of tips and attention to my 12yo son. We had 3 kids he was super patient especially for an experienced guide and helped them have a good time. It wasn't the best day for fishing but Mark was fully committed to us having a good time and finding the fish. We still caught plenty and had a great time. He provided breakfast tacos, a cooler of water and other drinks. It was $600 for first 2 people, $100 each additional. While we were out his fish finding gear was down but because he is so well connected he had other guides texting him and telling us where to go. We found some big black drum and gorgeous trout thanks to Mark and his connections. It's just good to know that if something unexpected happens he has a brotherhood of other guides willing to assist. I think that says a lot about him. Mark is high energy, passionate and a great guy!! He had a couple of meeting place options, we picked Lobo Del Mar. so sort that out with him other options were Jim's pier or something else too. We did Lobo and had the cook the fish after it was like $13 per person and came with a side. While we knew that this was a possibility, all past sailing charters we have used would have notified us the night prior that our trip was canceled. The terrible lack of notice left us scrambling to find alternatives of which there are numerous options. If you are looking for a cheaper guaranteed charter trip that won't cancel at the very last minute, then it might be worth exploring other options. We will not be back.
