Daughter and I had lunch date here last week. I have 2 physician friends who both happen to be Indian, that have each recommended that I try this spot. They have raved about just how good and authentic the food is. I was very leery because I am familiar with the location. Mainly because it is connected to a rather infamous hotel downtown that has had several arrests make the news. I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt however after such high recommendations. Atmosphere: The restaurant portion was very clean and tidy with a surgical gloved waiter cleaning off tables constantly and meticulously. I did visit the bathroom which is located in the hotel. It was quite scary. Very dilapidated but fairly clean. The restaurant definitely had the familiar curry smell permeating the entire space. It was a good smell. I'll give this category 1/2 star for the sketchy attached hotel. Food: The food was very good. I wanted to start with a Hariyali Kebab but was told they were out of the kebabs. So we both just went straight to the main courses. My daughter ordered the Butter Chicken and I requested the Chicken Kadai. Both were served with Basmati Rice. Basmati rice is a very long grained rice with a distinct aroma. It goes fabulously with Indian food. My daughter's Butter Chicken, in appearance, was much like an orange thin chicken curry soup. The flavor, while still having the curry aroma, was very rich and buttery. Almost no heat to this dish. The basmati really helps to soak up the liquid. The Chicken Kadai is an onion and bell pepper based curry. It has some heat to it but isn't overpowering. A nicely smooth onion taste with plenty of big bell pepper chunks. Would definitely order again. The portions are very generous. I was full after eating barely half of mine and ended up taking it to work the following day and finishing it off. It was delicious a second time. While we were getting ready to order, another physician that I have worked with, entered to pick up a togo order and he made the comment that he comes several times a week. I will be coming back to try some of the other dishes. Or perhaps even get them to go. 2 Stars Service: It was a little disappointing but acceptable. Just a little slow to check up. There were only 3 tables at the time (about 1:00ish) and it seemed we had to keep stopping our waiter to ask for items. But he was very polite and quick to fill our requests. 1 stars. Overall the food was VERY good and I recommend it. The atmosphere and service was acceptable. I would have given it a strong 3.5 stars if Yelp would allow it, but alas, I will round up for the great food. Most likely will get it to go next time. ------------------------------------------------ My rating system: Up to 1 star for atmosphere (Let's face it, I could eat Franklin BBQ on a dirty napkin while sitting in the bed of my truck.) Up to 2 stars apiece for both food and service (these are the two things that will either drive me away or reel me back in) 1 Star-Wouldn't let my dog eat here 2 Star-Below average-usually something really struck me as being bad and I doubt I would ever return. 3 Star-Average-Might come back. Might not if there are better options. 4 Star-Above average-will definitely come back and try something new. This is the best curry and Indian food i have ever had. The food is so authentic and delicious, the owners are wonderful and you can tell they put so much love into the restaurant. The curries are so flavorful, ranging from mild to very spicy. The samosas are INCREDIBLE. I am in Abilene once a year and it's my first stop every time. They have wonderful vegetarian and vegan options, we had a few vegans friends join us and they where so pleased. Spicy India is some of the best Indian food I have ever had. I was so shocked and delighted when this small cozy Indian spot opened up in downtown Abilene, and man, what a find. The small family owned restaurant has an intensive menu from breakfast to dessert; I've yet to order something bad. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, 100% open to questions and give great advice on ordering. The samosas are hands down the best I've ever eaten. The gobi manchurian is to die for. The naan is on point and perfect for dipping in your favorite curry: butter chicken, lamb vindaloo, aloo gobi. Just trust me. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone. I'm tired of American food. Each week, I pray to the food gods, please bring German food to Abilene. Each week, I wipe a tear from my eye when it doesn't happen. I guess they decided to cut me some slack, because Spicy India is here and it is wonderful! The people working there are so nice. I wasn't sure what to order and there was a tiny language barrier when I asked for suggestions. I ordered chicken 65 as an appetizer, chicken korma as my entree, and garlic naan as a side. The people next to me said "careful, it's spicy!" I ordered everything medium spicy. The chicken 65 came out a bright red. Spicy, but just right for me. The chicken korma I would describe as a curry chicken over balsamic rice. It had a small kick, but not too spicy. Pure heaven on a plate. Delicious. I'm a big fan of naan, and this garlic naan is the best I have ever had. Couple beside me said lunch specials are great and cheap. I'll be there as soon as possible. Did I tell you how good the garlic naan was? Tip... I came home and googled all the desserts so I would know what to get next time. Double Ka Meetha it is! Incredible food. Honestly surprised Abilene could pull this talent. Every curry seems carefully made, not mass produced. Nothing I've tried was disappointing. Can I just live here? Prices on some items are a little higher than I'd like to pay but in the end, the quality is deserving of the compensation. Highly recommend takeout if you have a large group. Seating is plentiful but larger orders may take a bit longer. Staff could be a bit more courteous, at least the servers. They aren't really rude, just lack western style serving etiquette. Can be somewhat direct and maybe slower on the uptake when you need attention, just be ready for that. Overall, I hope this place sticks around for a long time! Soooo goooood. read more

This place has one of the best Indian food I have ever had. It was so delicious I couldn't stop eating it, and I hate spicy food!

I ordered the chicken tikka masala and butter naan with raita. The chicken tikka masala had very little chicken in it and the sauce seemed diluted. The butter naan was tasty, but the raita was like a sour vinegar dip rather than the traditional yogurt cucumber mix that I'm used to from other Indian restaurants. read more

I really cannot give it even one star because I tried to eat there at 2:00 PM today. But didn't. But you need at least one star to post a review. One person was there waiting at a table. Rest of the restaurant was empty. They close at 3:00 PM for lunch and then re open for dinner. We were a party of three. It was 18 degrees outside. They had four tops by window and doors. We didn't not want to sit by the door and window because it was cold very cold by them. The bench seats in the middle of the restaurant were too far from table for my mother, who cannot bend forward due to a crushed hip reconstruction surgery, to lean forward and eat. And were too hard for her to sit in and uncomfortable. We asked if we could sit at a table away from the door and windows because it was so cold. They had two sets of tables for four people each pushed together in that area. We asked if we could sit at one of those four tops pushed together away from the door and windows where it was cold. The person cleaning the tables said no. It was reserved for a party tonight at 5:00. We asked if it could be reset if we ate now and we're gone by 3:00 PM when they closed for lunch and had 2 hours before the reservation. They said no. We asked the owner and they said no. I said I could reset it after we ate as we left. Although there were at least four workers that were standing behind the counter looking at us when they said no. So I am not sure if their reasoning was labor shortage? I understand when you are busy wanting to sit tables based on party size, etc. I worked in a restaurant and with restaurant's for years. But the restaurant was wide open. And it was three hours until the party. But they had the choice to not accommodate us when we asked and had the choice to leave. So we did. BTW she. We walked in they asked if it was dine in or carry out and my brother said dine in and the person behind the counter said ,"sit wherever you want" by pointing to all the tables. The point is wherever we sat would still have to be cleaned and bussed whenever we left. read more

Just really, REALLY good food! When I went in, I had some questions about the menu, since I have some food allergies. The waitress wasn't comfortable answering my questions (THANK YOU for not just guessing!) so she wanted the owner to explain the menu and talk to us. It took a very long time to get her to come over so we could place our order, and an equally long time to get the food, as it's prepared fresh, but WOW--it was worth it! I ordered the Vindaloo Chicken and it was absolutely delicious. Portions were generous--I had enough to take home for lunch the next day. I will DEFINITELY be back the next time I'm in Abilene. The food that we did get was very good. However, the service was deplorable. We ordered Garlic Naan before anything else and never got it. Our water glasses set empty on the table for most of our dining time. The kitchen help was fighting with the waitstaff. They kept complaining that it was busy but there were a total of 4 tables. When checking out, I told them to take the naan off of my ticket because I never got it. No apology. Just blaming the kitchen staff. I'll probably be back because the food was good.
