Spin Street is a great local bike shop with awesome product and midwest friendly customer service. I went car-free this January and ordered a bike - a Jamis Commuter2 from Chad. What I appreciated was the planning he went through with me for the kind of bike that would be good. He spent a lot of time chatting and letting me learn a lot and then by spring when the weather broke I tried out four bikes. I only wanted to try one. The one I had my heart set out on. But I "humored" him and tried some others. Well, I didn't get the one I thought I wanted. And I wouldn't have ever even tried this bike if he didn't suggest it and keep in mind, listening very well, to my riding habits and desires and the functionality I wanted out of my bike. If you want the cheapest. Maybe don't go there. If you want to get it and out in a hurry. OK - maybe don't go there. But if you care about the bicycle you will be getting, your body fit and the entire biking experience - go to Spin Street. read more

Bike shops are known by the term "LBS" to cyclists, short for Local Bike Shop. I've been to plenty around Lansing, and it's obvious that Spin Street is a different kind of LBS as soon as you walk in the door. For one, there isn't the elitist attitude that seems to pervade most bike shops - the folks at Spin Street seem genuinely friendly and willing to help, no matter what your problem is. They also stock some gorgeous Bianchi and Fuji bicycles, leaning more towards the road bike bent of things than mountain. read more

i had been bike shopping for a few months when a good friend suggested Spin Street. i was trying to keep my options open so i went for a visit. i am so glad i did. the customer service was amazing! they took the approach of understanding the type of riding i was looking at doing and then paired me up with the bikes that best fit my needs. it was clear the staff knew their products very well. i could have not been more pleased out of the many shops i visited, Spin Street treated me the best and knew their bikes better. read more

I went there to see if they carried used bikes. They don't but the guy working there was very friendly and told me about other places in town. The place he referred me to I had never heard of and was exactly what I was looking for. Other people I have spoken to have only had good experiences shopping here. It's nice to have more than 1 good bike shop in town and it's even nicer when they are honest. I'd recommend this place. read more

I haven't yet entered the store -- my husband did the "heavy lifting" for me since I was at work. But Chad and his crew did a great job for me just a few days prior to a triathlon. I will be visiting in person, hopefully this Saturday to say thank you in person. I think the prices are reasonable and at least in line with other similar shops. Chad called prior to any repairs -- replacing rim tape and a tire. I wasn't available for the call, but I did appreciate it. I will be returning in the future. :) read more

I had a completely different experience as Spin Street. We went there just to pick up a replacement bike lamp. I found it to be a pretty elitist, arrogant bike shop. The prices for bike lights were high, the bikes were all pretty expensive. We went to riverfront afterwards and found the exact same lights for $5 - $10 cheaper. read more

Spin Bicycle shop is a locally owned bike shop. They have only select few brands in their stores and those are really good and have good reviews. When we went in for buying two bikes, they explained a lot on why this might be a good fit. The owner Chad is not like a regular sales man trying to sell all his items to the folks coming in for advise. He really takes time to understand you before showing any bikes to you. Is the bike store little expensive ? Yes, but the experience is so worth it. They take real good care of the customer. I already went in like 6 times after i got my bike with them for some minor adjustments. They did it every time at no cost. I would really go to this store in a heartbeat to buy something or just hang around. read more

Elitist shop? me thinks so. I took my older bike in to get a tuneup (replace spokes, true wheels and adjust gearing). I admit that it had a few problems, but I highlighted those issues that I wanted them to emphasize, such as slipping in my fav gear range. I expected at least $100 damage, but the final bill came out over $170! That was acceptable, I guess, since I don't normally have it worked on by anyone. I paid the bill and took it home. I went out to ride during the next week, and I discovered that the issue with slipping gears was actually a bit worse than before. I called to schedule to bring it back. They admitted on the phone that there is often a difference between the adjustment on the bench and taking it on the road, so I expected that a minor tweak would probably resolve it. I didn't expect them to put the blame on me. I didn't even suspect that you could do a 'bait and switch' with a bike repair, but that's what the owner tried to do with me. When I took it in, I started out the discussion very calm, since I hadn't expected a line of 'spin'. By this time there were other 'customers' within voice range of our discussion, which could have made a difference in his argument which essentially placed the fault on me and my bike. One by one I began knocking down his rationalizations regarding why the bike wasn't adjusted correctly. For example, he made a comment about different folks riding differently, as though that made any difference in how you true tires or adjust the gearing. He began to lose his cool because he couldn't play me for an idiot. Finally, he stated that maybe the bike couldn't be adjusted, something I totally didn't expect to hear, since I'd already paid for the job! Then the owner whipped out his little chain gauge and within a few seconds, literally, he assessed that maybe the chain and rear gears were too worn, and implied that my bike needed new gears and chain in order to be adjusted -- the way I'd been told I had already paid for. I was not only shocked that this was his excuse for not properly adjusting the bike, but that he was implying it would cost even more. When I began to argue that I should have been told this when I brought it in because it only took him a few seconds for him to assess this condition and factor in the other costs, and that's when he became so distraught that he told me to just leave because he could no longer reason with me. He couldn't reason with ME! Well, I obviously wasted my money, because I had to take it somewhere else. I called MSU bike shop and took it in. I'd purchased tools and parts from them before because their prices are considerably less than any pro shop. The first thing they did was whip out the same chain gauge tool and assess the wear on the chain and gears, and they admitted, and showed me, how badly my bike was worn. They admitted that a proper adjustment would be impossible until the rear gears and chain were replaced. It was so obvious that anyone who uses this simple tool as a preliminary measure of a bikes wear, especially an older bike such as mine, could clearly see that my bike was too worn. Of course I was concerned that I'd just spent over $170 and was back to square one with the problems, but I was very impressed with their friendliness and knowledge -- and what else could I do. They told me exactly how much it would be to replace the rear cassette and chain -- a mere $50 total plus labor! I left my bike again -- eating up more summer riding time-- and within a week it was ready to go. The total cost -- are you ready -- and remember, this is going to make my bike perform as it did when it was new -- $95! I guess I learned a couple valuable lessons. Not only is my bike working in perfect order, I've increased its resale value by more than what it cost to have it fixed by those great folks at the MSU bike shop. I STRONGLY urge anyone considering a significant repair (or purchasing parts) to first consider the MSU bike shop, BEFORE you risk getting the spin as I did. The pros at Spin had every opportunity to be reasonable and work with me on making a fair arrangement, and instead they tried to get maybe another $100 out of me, probably more. You've been honestly warned!!! The MSU bike shop also had to replace a broken spoke. I admit I can put over 100 miles a week on that bike, but it usually takes a year or so to break spokes. I was told that an improperly tuned wheel can cause them to break sooner. I guess my bike got the full amateur repair from Spin! read more

I'm the type of person who dislikes giving negative reviews of places unless they really deserve it. I'm a little torn in this case, because when I went in the staff were all friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. I spoke to the owner of the shop initially. I had a bike that I was dropping off for repairs (it was a Wednesday). It needed a general tune-up and some recabling. I just wanted it for a beater bike. The owner looked at the schedule, and said that he actually had some free time, and that it would be ready either Thursday (the next day) or Friday. Great! Friday came, and I had no word from them. Finally, later Friday afternoon, I called (as they close quite early, at 6PM). The repair person that I spoke to said he'd done some work on it, but that he wanted the owner to take a look, and he was gone for the weekend to celebrate his anniversary. Monday came, and I had no word. To make a long story short, I called repeatedly (because they kept telling me the next day, but then wouldn't call to inform me it was ready or that it was delayed again), and the bike didn't end up being repaired until the following Thursday. All of this probably wouldn't have mattered if they hadn't originally told me 1-2 days, then put me off 1 day each time I called for a week. As a business, it's rather important that you are better able to gauge repair time than that, and that you are apologetic when things are continuously changed. They are very competent staff, and nice people, but I was disappointed in their service and probably wouldn't go back because of it. read more

I have dealt with Chad, the owner, for seven or eight years. I found him on my morning ride to work passing his shop. I went in and found Chad and his staff personable, courteous, and professional. I have kept going to them and always have been treated well. I have a foldable bike that I use as a commer bike which Chad has kept on the road for close to 10, 000 miles. He even rehabbed it when the shifting died and gave me an extra gear and new shifters. While I bought the bike before I met Chad he has always treated it like I had bought it from him. He has recommended many things (lights, saddles, etc.) to me and they have always been great, meeting or exceeding my expectations. I will be retiring shortly and as a present to myself, I went to Chad to order a Terra Trike which he went over with me ordering the extras that I would need and making sure that this was the bike I wanted. I enjoy going to a local bike shop (LBS) where they know me by name and greet me by name when I walk in. If you want a cheap bike or cheap service, go somewhere else. I have used other shops in town when Chad did not have the stuff I needed in stock but they did not treat me with the same respect I get with Chad and his staff. I have always dealt with the LBS wherever I have lived. Chad and his staff rank at the top. I will sorely be missing them when I retire and move out of state. But when I told Chad that, he helped me find a new shop near my new home that will be able to service the Terra Trike. That kind of service makes life so enjoyable! read more
