Unfortunately, I let the negative reviews in here influence my decision and hired another attorney instead and it cost us valuable time. What immediately stood out to us was Bornstein Law's transparency. Their terms and fees are clearly listed on their website. That was a big relief after the other attorney was trying to get us to sign with their firm and start an eviction over a small issue (Bornstein Law's fees are more affordable vs the other attorney we talked to). During our consultation, we didn't have to spend a long time explaining every detail of our situation and Attorney Bornstein had already identified the issue and presented several options to resolve our tenant issue. He was direct, practical, and didn't sugarcoat anything. I can see how some people might interpret that as feeling unheard, but in our case, we appreciated his efficiency. He was also considerate enough to recommend options that would cost us less because our matter was not an eviction case. After the call, I realized why some reviews mention communication issues. At the end of our consultation, he accidentally placed us on hold, apparently thinking the call had already ended. Should we be upset about it? Maybe. But compared to finally having a clear path forward for our tenant issue, it felt like a minor mistake. We left the consultation relieved and confident about our next steps.

I googled and found that Levine Family Law advertises this service. They charged, as I recollect, $3500. The forms went in fine, but then I waited for months for the court order to be entered. At first they said six weeks, but the timeline kept slipping. I started having calls with Levine asking what was happening--they said the SF court was backed up and that it would take time. But it became clear that they did not have a direct line to the courthouse and had a very difficult time getting hold of human beings over there: they were essentially blind. I asked for a call with my lawyer, Stan, but was informed he had left the practice (nobody had told me). I had a call with the office manager Katie, and she basically told me I'd just have to wait. It was very nice and all, but she said I just needed to wait. I live about 20 min drive from the courthouse, so after that call I got so frustrated I got in my car, and I went to the courthouse. There was no line at the records office. They pulled my application, and the clerk said he'd put it on the top of the stack on Monday. By Tuesday, my name/change order was granted, and I had my certified copies. What makes me angry is that I was repeatedly told that the courthouse was busy and, essentially, incompetent, but actually every interaction I've had with them, whether for this or for other records requests, has been prompt and efficient. There is almost never a line; they are very helpful in answering questions. It has become clear to me that Levine Family Law merely scapegoats the courthouse, and that the true issue is their inability to get anyone there on the phone. In the USA, we don't hire lawyers merely to fill out forms--we hire them to shepherd us through the legal process. Levine family law certainly would never be as cavalier about the fate of a child custody or divorce decree--it is only their trans clients that they leave to fend for themselves, twisting in the wind for months. It is unconscionable to charge people $3500 and then be unwilling to take twenty minutes to, say, show up at the courthouse and make sure the decree actually gets entered. If you're not willing to do what it takes to get the decree granted, please don't offer it as a service. As it is, I have no doubt that if I'd filled out the forms myself and gone to the courthouse on my own, I'd have gotten everything done much quicker and more cheaply. I want to reiterate that the forms they filed were apparently fine, but they had absolutely no orientation to actually following up with the court. No doubt they will respond to say that they did their job when they filed the forms. But I was advised by Stan specifically that he was going to be in my corner, following up on these forms. When a firm charges for this service, they are charging for peace of mind--the idea that they will handle everything. If all you want is someone to file forms, maybe this law office is fine, but if you want someone who will make sure the decree actually gets granted, you shouldn't go with them.

When I called to ask about their fees, the person I spoke with suggested that I talk to the president, Frank Kaul, who is an expert in writs and levies. Frank called me back, and we spoke at length about my judgments and the difficult litigation I was still dealing with. He listened with genuine empathy and kindness and took the time to understand my situation and what I had been going through. I have been using Swift Legal ever since, and I couldn't be happier. They are knowledgeable, experienced, responsive, and professional, but what truly sets them apart is that they genuinely care. They just did a terrific job for me on a rush assignment dealing with a particularly difficult Sheriff's Office. They moved heaven and earth to get something done in one day. This is the second time they basically dropped everything and got something done for me that was pretty difficult. They have also finessed a few things in the San Mateo Sheriff's Office. (Frank knows the local Sheriffs and is careful to follow the procedures in each office -- this one needs a declaration re electronic writ even after the change in the SER forms etc...) If you have work in Nor Cal, I can't recommend them highly enough. (I should also mention that they just opened an office right across from CT Corporation in Glendale)

Initially, my experience was positive, they promptly filed my court documents, and I appreciated their quick work at the beginning of the process. Unfortunately, communication came to a complete stop after that. Over the following month, I sent multiple follow-up emails, made several phone calls, and left a voicemail requesting an update on the status of my service request. Despite these efforts, I generally received no response and no information regarding whether service attempts had been made or what the next steps would be. I understand that service of process is not always straightforward and that delays can occur. My concern was not the delay itself, but the lack of communication. Even a brief update would have been appreciated and would have given me confidence that my case was still being handled. Because I was unable to obtain any solid information after more than a month, I ultimately decided to retain another process server to avoid further delays in my court matter. I hope the company improves its communication with clients, as timely updates are especially important when people are relying on process service for legal proceedings.

My case was a small request for legal representation on a disqualification for unemployment benefits. My ex-company made accusations, without proof, of stealing from the company, mismanagement of time in the field and breach of company policy. Sounds pretty serious for taking off 35 minutes early at the office. I called around to 5 firms - all to small a case to represent me. Since when does the need for a fair shake and professional navigation become a point of, 'Does this case make me a lot of money?' Mr. Oddie heard the call for help and came to the rescue. His pricing was ultra reasonable ($500) and his knowledge in labor law stumped the expertise of Hasting's free clinic. Hasting's said I had NO case due to California being an At Will State... At the hearing, my ex-employer brought on the heat and the lawyers. Mr. Oddie made them look foolish and complacent. Turns out Mr. Oddie argued that I was finished with work for the day and that taking on another project was a minimal 1.5 hours investment. I work as a field repairman so I would have to drive out to the next location and address the needs of the customer. Mr. Oddie also noted that my ex-company didn't pay me for any time after 5pm and therefore it didn't make sense to start on the next repair job. Without his help, I would have let my ex-company run all over me and get away with corporate theft by falsely firing me, easing their positioning for Lay Offs in the down turn of the economy and get away from paying me my Unemployment Benefits. All of my past co-workers and friends have Mr. Oddie's number and my ex-company had better watch their corporate antics. If you feel taken and need a lawyer in your corner, give Oddie Lynn and Grisanti a call. Ask for James, you'll be glad you did!
