Terry was everything we could hope for in a DJ and more. We had a very small wedding at a venue that forced us to use their sound system with a noise regulator on it and despite that hurdle Terry went out of his way to sneak in a portable speaker and keep me (someone who doesn't dance) on the dance floor. Everyone loved the wedding and he did an excellent job of mixing my love for classic rock with my brides love for pop (especially late 90's). We considered going with an iPod in the corner till mom-in-law said 'um, no'. We met with Terry for 20 minutes about 6 months before the wedding and then promptly forgot about music till the day of. He remembered EVERYTHING we said from that first meeting. He figured out exactly what we wanted from that one short meeting. Terry played a fantastic mix of old-person-pleasers and modern-hits. We have nothing but good to say about Peter Haley after he DJ'd our wedding. Two things were important to us in a DJ - that he could read a crowd and play what would keep them on their feet dancing, and that he could maintain a classy/casual demeanor as MC without making himself a spectacle. Peter hit the mark on both counts. In our first meeting we talked about the kinds of music we liked (tough task for dancing, since we both like 60s - 70s classics and Americana with an unhealthy dollop of 80s pop thrown in on my side), and shared thoughts on what was danceable as well as a few "do not play" essentials (macarena, chicken dance, rap). We did give him a song list with suggestions as well as a few "my heart will break if I don't hear this" asks, and he wove many of them in beautifully while also riffing with other songs once he saw the dance floor responding. His contract terms and price are reasonable, dealing with him by phone and email was straightforward, and he did a great job sticking to the timeline we laid out for the evening without us feeling excessively scheduled. Finally I'm writing a review! I got married 11 months ago and Peter Haley was our exceptional DJ at our reception at the Spinnaker in Sausalito . I received a lot of advice during wedding planning and one piece of advice was that you really need good tunes. So, I was on the hunt for a great DJ and saw the wonderful reviews about the Spinheads on Yelp and received a referral from a friend as well (Peter worked my friend's brother's wedding in SF). My husband and I met with Peter about 8 months prior to the date and didn't even hesitate to book him (we also met a week or so prior to the big day). Music is really important to a fun reception and I've been to weddings where the DJ was just ok and it made a difference between a good time and great time. I didn't even need an evening coordinator between the restaurant and Peter. He made sure the timing was great and didn't hesitate to let me know anything I needed to know. I even had a live musician for part of the time(Sabbath from Fiddlers) and Peter made the whole thing seamless! The music was awesome, everyone danced up a storm and talked about what a great reception we had! He has heart and skill in what he does and it shows. We got married a couple months ago and are finally getting around to reviewing our vendors. We really couldn't be happier with Peter as our wedding DJ- he turned out to be one of our best vendors. We didn't have a separate emcee so Peter was both our emcee and our DJ. He was flexible, easy to work with, calm, upbeat, and professional. He kept the flow of the evening moving smoothly along, and did a great job integrating our strange requests (Russian songs, Disney songs, camp songs, etc). Of course with lots of Rihanna too :) Things we loved about working with Peter: - We booked him without meeting him first since we lived on the other side of the country from where the wedding was happening. We just found him on yelp, talked to him on the phone, and were convinced. - He took the time to meet with us a couple weeks before the wedding (when we came to town) and discuss the plan for the day. We met at a cafe in San Francisco and went over the physical layout of the venue, the timetable, what music we like, specific songs we had in mind, and what kind of mood we wanted to set. And he had great suggestions since my husband and I weren't too picky and were open to hearing what he thought (we actually picked our father-daughter dance song based on his suggestion). He has a lot of experience. - He was comfortable DJ/emcee-ing a Jewish wedding (except he pronounced "challah" wrong which cracked up our guests- no big deal) - He was very responsive over email. I was pretty anal and asked a lot of questions (especially in the couple weeks before the wedding, when we gave him all sorts of last-minute song requests and schedule changes)- as any bride knows, the responsiveness is very important. Peter always responded promptly and politely and was very accommodating. - On our wedding day, he came early and wore a nice suit. - We didn't have to worry about any of the A/V equipment- Peter provided everything he needed. Our venue was the Golden Gate Club which he is familiar with. - He emceed during the dinner reception, introducing all the speakers (we had a lot of speeches- over an hour) which went smoothly. - We were quite impressed by how he handled the flow of songs throughout the evening, especially with all of our oddball requests. For example, I requested a random Russian song that my dad likes, and Peter chose the perfect timing- he played it quietly during dinner while people were eating- I don't know if anyone else noticed it, but my dad and I exchanged a glance when that song started playing and I really appreciate that moment. I requested some songs from musicals that he played during dinner as well. My camp friend requested one of my favorite camp songs ("Istanbul was Constantinople") which he played toward the end of the dancing which was also one of my favorite moments. - Before playing one of my favorite songs ("Hot in Herre"), he said "this one goes out to the bride" - that ended up being one of my favorite moments from the wedding too (thanks, Peter!). - During the reception he did a great job reading the crowd (for example, extending the Hava Nagila song when not everyone had been lifted in chairs). He suggested playing more of the oldies and wedding classics at the beginning, and more of the hip hop/pop I like toward the end, which ended up working really well. We also had the dancing paused to do cake cutting and more speeches, which he emceed flawlessly. - He just had the perfect touch to the songs- even playing "Sweet Caroline" which my husband (who's from Boston) and his family just loved (we didn't request it, but we're so glad he played it). - Our wedding had 150 guests and he kept many of them on the dancefloor all night (we didn't stop dancing). - He worked with my husband to help pull off a surprise song performance for the bride - He's just a positive presence to have around the guests and he was one of the only vendors who I actually interacted with at the end of the night and I just had a big smile on my face and gave him a hug and said thank you. - He's very affordable and the payment/paperwork was one of the easiest/smoothest of all the vendors. We worked with him on a playlist, he is very down to earth and knows every single song we could possibly have thought of. We just got married on December 11, 2011, and Terry Cole DJ'd for our wedding ceremony and reception. I knew of no DJs so I searched online. I was nervous about finding someone online but Terry had such great reviews that I decided to contact him. He responded immediately, which is so crucial when planning a wedding. We arranged to meet at a venue where he was working so I could see him at work. He was very nice and personable and had a contract ready. He even gave me a copy of CD's he put together and followed up with me after our meeting. In the meantime, another friend recommended me someone who DJ'd at her wedding. I had contacted him but he never responded. After meeting Terry, I tried one more time and contacted the other DJ and he said he's probably available on our wedding day but he'll let me know later that night or the next day because he had to run to a meeting. He never replied. So I decided to go with Terry. And Terry was FANTASTIC! My fiance and I met with Terry about a week before the wedding at his apartment to choose our music and go over our timeline. We wanted to leave most of the music choices to Terry because he seemed very experienced at weddings. We told him that our wedding had a cycling theme because we are both avid cyclists. He suggested Queen's "Bicycle Race" song as the bride and groom entrance song at the reception. It was a huge hit! Everyone was laughing and it was a great start to our reception. Everyone was dancing throughout the night, even my 1 year old niece who just kept dancing and dancing until her parents took her home. I wish there were 10 stars to give Terry Cole of the Spinheads!! I planned a surprise 50th birthday for my husband and was in need of a DJ. The place where I held the party recommended Terry Cole of the Spinheads. I was really nervous about the hiring of a DJ as I feel they can make or break a party. I gave Terry a call and immediately felt relieved when speaking with him. He was very calm, professional, organized, knowledgeable, etc. We talked about the party, what type of music I wanted, what I didn't want, etc. Terry had some great ideas that I hadn't thought of. I was pleasantly surprised at how affordable he was. I booked him on the spot. As the months before the party went on,and more ideas kept popping in my head or I heard a good song on the radio, I'd e-mail Terry. He was always receptive to my ideas and always responded to my e-mails. Very comforting to know that you are being heard. About a week before the party, I called Terry and wanted to make sure that he and I were on the same page. Terry pulled out my file and read me everything that he and I had talked about over the previous months. Again, relieved that he really did listen and take notes! Okay, the day of the party comes and I am at the hall very early in the day decorating. Terry also was there setting up - I couldn't believe he came so early! Now, it's party time and party we did! First of all, I had a couple of people give speeches. Terry came up with some great "walk-up music" for them. For instance, my brother-in-law John, walked up to "Big John, Big Bad John". It was hysterical, everyone loved it! Now the dancing begins, and let me tell you, people were rocking! I cannot tell you how many people came the night of the party to tell me how great the music was and where did I find the DJ! It's now 5 days after the party, and I am still getting compliments about how much fun they had and how they haven't danced that much in years! I owe it all to Terry. He helped me plan the event while I was on the East Coast, answering endless emails, sending songlists back and forth, and reassuring us every step of the way. From the moment we met Peter, we knew we would be working with a warm, caring and professional person. He met us for our 1st mtg at a location convenient to us, even though it was out of his way. He listened attentively to my Do's & Dont's for our wedding playlist. We provided him with a very detailed list of the songs we wanted played and at what point we wanted them played throughout the wedding. I hope I didn't drive him crazy! LOL! But he was non-judgemental and so respectful. His own music selection is huge. His fun personality is what made our fabulous wedding so fabulous! He met with us face-to-face at our venue early in our planning and was very flexible in dates, times and locations since my son and his bride were from Oregon and had limited time in the Bay Area. That never happened at our wedding. He got it going from the start and read the crowd and kept the party going! People complimented us well after the wedding. He even gave us CD's of the night's songs! That would have been enough to get him 5 stars as a DJ. But he was so much more for us. He was in touch with us before and helped us with figuring out the order of the night's events, logistics and was always helpful with advice. We had our ceremony outside, dinner in one room and dancing in another. He did 4 setups for us so the transition was flawless. Then on the night of, I was running around putting out night-of issues (opening windows, trying to find more toilet paper for the bathrooms, etc) and he saw me looking around and immediately stepped in and said "I'll take care of it." It had nothing to do with his job description but he was always there to make sure things were taken care of and that we were just enjoying ourselves. I appreciated that more than anything else. We were the people who were going to rent speakers and create our own playlist on our iPods, so we were skeptics about why we even needed a d.j.-- what's so hard about playing music at a wedding, right? We talked to Peter on the advice of the venue... and were not only pleasantly surprised at how incredible the wedding reception turned out to be, thanks to him; we are complete converts to his party magic, and are looking for a reason to have another party so we can hire him again-- that's how much fun it was. He was completely professional, organized, showing up on time, prepared with all the equipment set up beforehand, appropriately dressed, friendly-- a notable quality about this thoroughly nice person was his positive outlook and great attitude: there were a few minor glitches (not his fault) he was happy to work through, no complaining, no blame-casting, lets just keep smiling and work it out. He was approachable, knowledgable, and helpful, and worked well with everyone connected with the wedding. It was clear the contentment of the bride and groom was paramount to his work at all times. At the last minute, Peter ended up playing the music for the ceremony, as well, and was flexible and happy to do it. He and the soloist were able to work out accompaniments for her from his extensive music library that were perfect-- it sounded as if they had collaborated on the pieces for weeks. His m.c. duties were tasteful and non-intrusive and the dance floor was packed-- packed-- from beginning to end-- all ages, all types, everyone out there having a fun time. And a wonderful variety of music, and just the right mix of fast/slow and new/old. Guests have given us enthusiastic feedback on what a great time they had. What a memorable evening. read more

There's a reason these guys have almost all 5- stars. They really are that great! If I could give 4 1/2, I would. Because of one oops moment, I can't bring myself to give the full 5. You decide. We met Terry a few weeks before the wedding and had a great time going through his samples. We asked for cover music during our cocktail hour and what Terry came up with was fantastic, including incredible covers we'd never heard (we are both musicians) and others we knew and loved. He gave us CDs to keep, including one of all unique covers, one of his favorites, one for standards, one for dance music and a couple other miscellaneous samplers. We didn't have many "must haves" on a list. After all, we wanted him to read the crowd and keep people dancing. He was hugely successful. Our reception two weeks ago. I've never danced so much in my life. My feet were hurting something awful the next morning from all the jumping in my heals, but it was sooooo worth it! The dance floor was busy the whole night, with all ages and many music tastes. Our guests LOVED the music selection and they keep telling us. The only little upset was in the cake cutting. This was a same-sex wedding. Two brides. No groom. We smiled and did the cake cutting thing with "the bride cuts the cake" coming out of the speakers. Then, the traditional "groom cuts the cake" actually came out of the speakers. Whaaaat? It was an easy oversight, I suppose, but the political side of me has to at least deduct a little for that. We groaned and he quickly went back to the beginning, fading out before the groom came back. It didn't really impact the night, but it bugged me enough that I'm still thinking about it, at least a little. At the end of the reception, he gave us a flash drive with all the songs he brought for the night (many, many songs!!) and a song list. A huge addition to our digital music library! read more
