My sister and I wanted to go snorkeling for my birthday, so we decided on Spirit at Captain Pip's. We came in person the evening before to check out the place and met Candace, who drives the boat. She was extremely kind and helpful. The following day was our excursion and again, she was kind and helpful. Her crew mate, Trenton, was sweet as could be as well. They were both full of information, they were helpful with all the do's and don't, and watched over the snorkelers very well. If you want a good experience on the water, go with Captain Pip's and hopefully you'll get Candace and Trenton too. read more

While down in the keys we did several different snorkeling adventure. Spirit snorkeling with Candace and Tanner was nothing short of amazing. Crew was excellent today, 3 cheers for safety while being fun, funny and friendly! Colton had a sunshine attitude and easily connected with the snorklers while remaining professional and helpful. Jessie was easy to converse with and cultivated a great atmosphere. All this was especially important because there was wind and waves today. Captain Rob was an amazing and thoughtful captain through the rough waves and gave us some local recommendations for fun and food. Regards Captain Pips and Spirit Snorkling. The flyers at the visitor center states a 3 hour snorkel session cost 49.50 per person. However when I booked they charged $66 per person. The snorkeling session over the reef didn't occur they said if it was windy they would not go to reef but to island. So we were just taken to the small island, they gave option for paddle boarding and kayaking with snorkeling. The island is surrounded with super shallow waters mostly rocks that makes it hard to swim and hard to snorkel and definitely hard to walk. I was worn out from trying to get away from rocks but unfortunately it was very rough terrain. All there is to see is cog shells and your not allow to take them or keep them. I literally seen three fish during the two hour trip and one lobster. I wouldn't recommend this snorkeling company if I give my honest opinion. Otherwise the captain and assistant was extremely great otherwise. read more

They took great care of us on our snorkeling trip to sombrero reef. And gave us great recommendations for places to eat, and things to do while staying in the area. Everyone was really friendly and easy to work with. They took us out to the lighthouse, where we could see all kinds of things like turtlesand barracudas and fish. Was a good time. read more

Went snorkeling the day before in Key West and was honestly not impressed - the group that I was with just dumped us in the middle of the ocean and we were just swimming around looking for a few fish in the murky water. On my way back to Miami the next day, I looked on Yelp for other snorkeling trips and came across Spirit Snorkeling and saw a bunch of highly touted reviews of the snorkeling at Sombrero Reef so I decided to give it try. Unfortunately I had missed the 9 AM/1 PM trips but they were offering a 2.5 hour 5:30 PM sunset cruise so I spontanenously signed up. The email said to arrive 45 minutes before but honestly you could probably cut it a little closer since we were just sitting around waiting auntil 15 minutes before departure. The location is a few blocks west of the Turtle Hospital in Marathon so I went to check that out and then came to the meetup location. Juan was our captain, and Luke/Robert were our other crew along for the ride. A bunch of interesting personalities, which made for a super fun trip and they all seemed to love working with each other. On the way out to the Sombrero Reef lighthouse, we passed under the Seven Mile Bridge and saw a loggerhead turtle. The snorkeling at the reef was just as advertised and was amazing with plenty of fish to see and even a nurse shark! Had some fun dumping leftover chip crumbs into the water and making the yellowtail go crazy. On the way back to the dock, we enjoyed a nice sunset over the Gulf of Mexico and while I don't really drink, Luke offered beer/wine/champagne for anyone who wanted to partake (complimentary water/soft drinks as well for the kids). Overall, it was a fantastic end to my time in the Florida Keys and I wish I had found out about this sooner but better late than never! Skip the snorkeling/sunset cruises in Key West and do this instead. read more

While in the Keys, we did several snorkeling excursions, and the one on Spirit turned out to be our favorite! We arrived in a sunny and tranquil weekday morning and boarded the catamaran. After a safety briefing, we began our trip out to the reef. The sun was shining, the water was calm, and every so often we saw the dorsal fin of a dolphin peeking out of the water as we made our way out to Sombrero Reef Lighthouse. Upon arriving, we had another safety reminder, then got our gear on to go for a dip. For the hour or so that we were at the reef, we saw a huge variety of fish and beautiful coral. We were the only large snorkeling group out there that day, so it didn't feel too crowded either, which made the open sea feel like it was all ours. The crew immediately made us feel welcome, and with our smaller group, we had plenty of time to chit chat with them and the other snorkelers. It was a relaxed and fun way to spend our morning - I just wish it could have been longer! If you're in the keys, especially the Marathon area, and are looking for snorkeling excursions, don't hesitate to go with Spirit! We were so happy with our choice and would love to go with them again on a future trip. read more

I got seasick on the 3 hour tour so I did not actually snorkel at all (I was the problem-- I'm not made for ocean boat rides! I'd recommend taking benadryl or something before if you're prone to motion sickness) BUT I have to say, the guides (Booker (DILF) & Jesse (sweetie)) were so kind and helpful during my situation On top of that, my sister (who felt fine mostly) had a great time snorkeling. 10/10 This was an amazing trip! The captain Larry and first mate Luke were so fun, kind, and safe. That captain never took his eyes off the kids - you can tell accounting for his people was a top priority of his. The first mate Luke let one of the kids blow the horn when we went under the bridge. They really read the crowd and made this one of the best snorkeling trips we've had in the keys (and that's saying something because we have had a lot). These two guys really made this a great trip - excellent choice in staff Captain Pips! Was our first time checking out sombrero reef. It's a pretty good reef. Saw hundreds of fish the second we got in the water. It was beautiful. We were not sure how the weather was going to play out and checked in via text a few hours before the trip. The captain went out earlier to check wind and cleared us for a perfect day - did not disappoint. read more

We had a great time on this snorkeling trip! It was just the right amount of time on the boat. We saw barracuda, sting rays, turquoise fish, beautiful plants and coral. Captain Jake and Jessie were super engaged with the guests on the boat. They were knowledgeable and responsive to our needs. I loved that they circled back and picked up large pieces of debris floating in the water. Even Tiny at the front desk was super accommodating with our large, last minute party. The water was warm enough- even for January- to hop right in- this was my biggest concern. I highly recommend this trip- it was a highlight of this visit to the keys. read more

We were originally booked with another company that cancelled an hour before the time to be there. I am so happy it happened. We had the best experience with Captain Joe and Jesse. This was the third time in our week we had gone out snorkeling ( others were at Joe Pennekamp, & Dry Tortugas) and this was the most we had seen by far. There were so many fish everywhere. We got to swim with a Sea Turtle even. We were very happy with the trip and would highly recommend them to anyone. read more
