This is a beautiful place with a amazing view and not known by most tourists. The entrance is hidden in a residential neighborhood and is easy to drive right by and the trail down is a challenge but short it might be a 100 yards. Directions From Kalanianaole Hwy, turn onto Lunalilo Home Rd towards the ocean. Turn left onto Poipu Drive. Go up the hill. Turn left on Lumahai. Follow it and park along the road at the end. You will see the path between houses on your right. The walk down is a bit steep but worth the effort. This is a great place to take pictures so bring your camera! read more

This place is way overrated. The same views and ocean action with much easier parking, just East a couple miles past Hanauma Bay. Very dangerous cliff to climb down. Not a SAFE cliff to jump off today June, 5 2019 a 21 year young man lost his life jumping off the ""Spitting Caves" please warn your children not to take this lightly. Addition to all, there is barely any parking and if you park illegally the neighbors will have your car towed. Many police patrols are in the area watching very closely for alcohol and other things... so watch out Not a fun Place all together. Not worth the drive read more

Honestly, I've been here a few times and it's absolutely gorgeous. It's a cute little hidden away area with a nice view. Great for pictures, especially when the sun is setting. I took my brother here when he was visiting from Big Island, and he liked it. He actually jumped off and scared me to death but I got a killer video. I definately recommend for people visiting. I hate spitting. It's a disgusting habit done by both locals and foreigners alike whenever I'm walking down Kalakaua Ave. What's wrong with swallowing it? Or use a trash can. Or something. Sheesh. (Hmm, how to make this review appealing now...) BUT! Spitting Caves is a good example of um...good...spitting? It may not have an appealing name, but it is a beautiful location on this little island. It's nestled near the multi-million homes of Hawai'i Kai and if you didn't know it was there, you would never know it existed. From the street, there's a 30 second mini-hike to endure and then you're there. It's that simple. Once you step out onto the rocks, you're blasted with the crisp saltiness in the air and the crashing boom from down below. You have the pleasure of taking in 180 degrees of awesomeness as you can clearly see Diamond Head to the west, and if you look closely, you'll see Moloka'i to the east. In between that, scenery so beautiful you would want to pat Mother Nature on the back and say "Well done." When I used to live in CA, I tried to find seculed places like this where I know it would usually be abandoned and I can just sit...and think and do whatever. My own personal break from the rest of the world. It's nice to know these places exist here too. As others have suggested, TAKE CAUTION. Just last weekend, the rushing waters below took another one. Would hate for this place to have that "negative vibe" just because some underestimated the strength of the waters below. If you want to cliff dive, do it somewhere else. So don't jump in. Okay, I swore I wouldn't write any more stellar 5 star reviews but this place is my favorite of favorite sights. When I moved to Hawaii, a friend moving away showed it to me, and made me promise to use it one day to wow some girl and get her to drop her panties. Well, believe me it totally works. She originally referred to it as "China Wall" but that's actually a different surf spot a little bit west/Ewa of there. This places has awesome rock formations, a stellar 270 degree view of crashing oceans and waves, and is truly the place to contemplate nature and the amazing creatures and power of the environment in Hawaii! I've seen turtles, monk seals, snorkelers, kayakers, cliff divers, etc here, crashing waves up to 30 feet high against the rocks, and that awesome awesome horizontal spitting cave. Not that lame touristy Halona Blowhole, but the real deal. This takes a bit of effort to find, and even though directions are everywhere, I won't post up the directions here, you have to contact me directly to get them (and give me a good reason why you are going). This place is perfect on a need-to-know basis, and I don't want just everyone and thousands of Japanese tourists/tour groups showing up like they did at Laniakea/Turtle Beach and ruining the peace/view for everyone else. Spectacular. No other way to describe it. Did the walk down in flip flops and my 66 yr old mother also was able to make the trip down so no concerns there. Saw some trash and glass on the rocks which makes me really sad. If you come here please be respectful and leave nothing behind. Do not jump! Two people got pulled out the day we were here. Hearing their account of what it felt like to get pounded by the water and not be able to breathe was chilling. Both were good swimmers and in their 20s. Don't think that just because you can swim and tread water for 30 mins with no problem that you can handle it. Of course there are exceptions but keep the above in mind. read more

One of my favorite places on this island---EVER. There are several ways to enter spitting caves... But I always take the entrance where you'd have to trek down from the residential area. Very fond memories when I always come here. From bright sunny days where you just want to look out into the deep blue open ocean... to think, reflect, and just enjoy. Or to the nights where you just wanted to chill and talk stories with friends...in the dark LOL. Nothing to distract you but the sound of the ocean waves hitting the rocks, smell of saltiness in the air, and the beautiful scenery of the constellations above you. (Seriously perfect for stargazing!) Besides the view, I've also always been fond of the rock formations. Beautiful ridges... almost mesmerizing. (LOL the designer in me). Although I have never been in the water (nor will ever attempt) please be careful!!! And always Malama the 'Aina. Clean up after yourselves if you plan on having a picnic here. \m/ read more

THANK YOU YELP FOR BRINGING ME AND MY HUBBY HERE! We needed something to do and it is like pulling teeth getting my husband out of the house. After driving around kailua, waimanalo, the blow hole and such I yelped active life and got this. Directions were spot on as I clicked the address on yelp. We parked and after a short walk we were blessed with a stunning view of the ocean, a cool breeze and awesome looking cliffs. No tourists, just locals so there was no foot traffic. We were also treated to a spinner dolphin show as a pod moved by during sunset. It was a perfect afternoon and after that my husband couldn't wait to get out and explore more! Does anyone know if this is a good place to spear fish? Hubby was curious but the water looks a little questionable to me! read more

I have lived in Oahu 8 years and I cannot bear to hear about another drowning at Spitting caves. I have scuba dived in the waters below the cave, and I don't recommend jumping without a flotation device handy or wearing a wetsuit (which will make you buoyant when you surface). If you are contemplating jumping, you are risking your life. Instead, call a local hotline for help, or take up scuba diving so you always have air. Fun stop without any crowds. The road was blocked by some electrical work so we parked and walked about a block. The workers thought we were sort of crazy and had never heard of the spot. Awesome, awesome, awesome! Totally off the path and something that should not be missed. It's hidden away in a really nice residential area - there's a pathway between houses. It's steep path down - but here are things to hold onto - just be careful. If I could get my pregnant self down there, so can you. Do not wear flip flops. The scene is gorgeous. I can't even explain it. The rock formations are stunning. Pictures do not do it justice. The spitting cave itself... well, it's nice, but you really pay more attention to the the surrounding area. Been here for cliff diving. unreal experience, very dangerous for newcomers as the jump is about 60ft. or so. as of November of 2013 there's a house going up right next to the walkway down to the cliffs, so you know you're in the right place if you see builders and such. recommend going during the summer for diving because the currents and waves pick up during the fall/winter read more

Nestled among some of the nicest homes on the island is this little gem. Take a short one-minute hike between some of said houses, hear the roar of the ocean, and boom. Blue, blue, blue, for as far as you can see. I come here when I just want some time to think or have a self-picnic, but I've often seen groups of friends hanging out, couples taking in the view, even some daredevils attempting a jump right into the water in front of the cave. If you do that, make sure you know what you're doing, please. The ocean is beautiful, but she can be very deadly. Time it well. There's already a memorial in place on the cliffside, no need to add more, right? Anyway, somber note aside, this is one of my absolute favorite places on the island. I make it a point to bring my visitors here, but I never ever tell any tourists about this spot. Keeps it nice, uncrowded, and clean for the rest of us. :) read more

Breathtaking!!! To describe this place in one word. Perfect backdrop for sunrise and sunset pictures. Perfect spot just to watch the horizon and hear the waves as they splash when they hit the rocks. Came here and took my daughter's sweet sixteen pictures and they came out beautiful. You should definitely wear sneakers or shoes with tread as it can get slippery going down the pathway to the rocks. read more

This is such a special place to find. A zillion years ago, my ex boyfriend brought me here to watch the sunset. I remember we had to walk between residential houses to get to the location. It was so beautiful. I also remember thinking that we had to hike back to the car before the sun completely set because we'd be stuck without flashlights. Since it was before cellphones were big or gps existed, I would have panicked if we couldn't see our way back. If I make it back to the island, I would LOVE to trek out here again. I LOVE this HIDDEN GEM! If you are lucky enough to find this cul-de-sac leading the way to a "downhill alley", you will be awarded with beautiful rocky cliffs with the MOST BREATHTAKING VIEW OF THE OCEAN!! You will probably find yourself alone, or only with a few others, in part because I think it's so hard to find! We regularly see a pair of turtles (almost every time!), a monk seal swimming (twice!), and a pod of dolphins (twice!). Definitely one of my favorite Oahu spots! It's gorgeous here. I've been to Oahu many times but this is the first time coming to this majestic place. It's definitely tucked away and you won't know where to go down but if you read some yelp reviews you will figure it out. It's across from house no 7 and next to house no 4. Be very careful going down because I've found some broken glass pieces. If you slip and put your hand down or knee, then you can cut yourself. Please people! Clean up after yourself. Pick up your trash as you are ruining it for others. My uncoordinated daughter was able to make it down with help of her dad so you can make the short but steep trek down. Wear sunscreen and bring water. Enjoy the view!! read more

My favorite scenic spot in Oahu Hawaii! Hard to get there but if u follow google there is a sign that leads u there (behind a industrial dumpster). It's a steep climb down so anyone with bad balance or afraid of falling recommended not go to. But it makes for an amazing photo op! read more

Love!! Over the years this has been my husbands and my place to watch whales, watch the sunset, look for shooting stars, or just relax and take in the beauty that is our island home. Then I guess everybody else found this spot too! Fail!! It has become more crowded over the years but that's okay. I don't have trouble sharing. If you can find spitting caves, you will be rewarded with one of the most breathtaking views of the ocean. People often come here to fish, or to just relax. So awesome! Not even a hike. Drive to the end of the Lumahai Rd culdesac and you'll set an entrance to a walkway on the right hand side. Walk down the narrow walled walkway for about 5 minutes to get to the hardened lava looking cliff sides where you can walk or sit and enjoy the ocean views. Date day with the wife and decided to make a quick stop here. It's definitely in an area where you'd least expect. The climb down is easy as long as you don't rush it. The view is beautiful and being so close you can really feel the power of the ocean. It's also fun watching the cave spit water out of its mouth. This is a place where time seems to stand still. Well, I hadn't been here in years. Decided to see if it was still accessible. Basically you drive through some housing tracts, park on the street, walk down this steep dirt path on the side of some house, and BAM- the wind is just in yo face. You are not going to just stumble by this place and find it by accident. It's worth the trip if you haven't been here before. In short, it's a cave on the side of the cliff that spits out water sideways when the tide comes in. I guess you could call it a sideways blowhole. You might have to wait a while for the show, but it's pretty neat. It's semi dangerous, there is no lifeguard, no guardrails, the cliff is pretty steep, and we were the only ones there. Don't let the kiddies start running around playing tag b/c they will definitely fall in. Every so often you will hear stories of people drowning here, but you will always have those crazy folks that like to jump off the cliff right over the cave. read more

My husband loved it. I thought it was scary. I would wear shoes with good skid and not bring young children. I also would avoid after sunset. There is no railing and the rocks you climb are smooth and slick, some are slimy from moss and mud. Any misstep and it's a long rocky way down to deep crashing waves. That said, it's beautiful. Very serene and quiet. I appreciate that it's natural beauty is maintained, however maybe some rock colored railings at the edge of the rock would be a good idea. read more

Terrible location to promote that activity. We love the beauty, admire the backdrop, gloat about how wonderful we have it, BUT! One slip or spontaneous urge may cost a life! It's a cliff at the end of a posh neighborhood in Hawaii Kai. For cliffs, you can get better than this...lol... You don't have to jump off the cliff to enjoy this place. Great place to watch other idiots jump off the cliff. Also good for star gazing. It can be VERY dangerous here. People have, and will die here. Idiots come here to drink at night, and take an unfortunate last dip off the cliffs. read more

This place is crazy beautiful. Just to the west of Hanauma Bay. The Cave wasn't spitting the day I went which is when the kids are plunging 70 feet from the cliff into the ocean. There were a bunch of military guys psyching themselves up for the leap when a local girl jumped off from over there heads and plunged right in. It was great!
