Awesome view. Amazing rock formations. Watch your footing as you hike. I would bring a sturdy pair of water shoes.

Listen to the Hawaiian Locals....it is a beautiful and dangerous place. I grew up surfing and diving in the area, and won't take my children here....we've watched people jump in the ocean only to have to call lifeguards, hoping they'll survive. The trail is slippery, and those that rave about it are not from here. Every year, there are numerous rescues and at least one person dies out at Spitting Caves. read more

One of the most gorgeous places I've ever seen. When you arrive, it looks like you are trespassing in a residential area, but you aren't - there is an easement so you can get down to the view - which is unbelievable. We watched the sunset, which was probably one of my favorite moments on our vacation. Words cannot do the beauty of this place justice. Must see!!! read more

Drive up to the end of Lumahai St. and you'll reach the end of a cul de sac. It won't be entirely clear where the entrance is but its across from the house at 7 Lumahai St.. You'll go down a small path and some stairs and shortly you'll reach the cliffs. You may see fishermen right along the cliff. If you go straight to the edge from the entrance you'll see the sitting cave to your left. In order for the cliff to truly spit there needs to be large wave to "feed" it first. And if you stare at the ocean below you'll see giant reef fish. The whole scene is very majestic. Overall, a great pit stop that rewards. read more

Seriously, so beautiful. I don't even know what to say about this place it's just fantastic. You reach the edge and all you want to do is take a deep breath and sigh. When my friend asked if I was ready to leave I literally said, "no." and continued to sit there and just breathe it in. Wear shoes that gave grip or you'll be all sad when you slip on the trail down. read more

This is a super easy place to get to, down from Kona Brewery, and while you're in the area you can check out Dog, the Bounty Hunters place! It's a little harrowing watching people climb up and jump off, but is not bad as long as they know how to read the waves. This is a nice spot for a sunset picnic. read more

Heard about this place, that you could jump off cliffs into the ocean (just to watch) and could see whales from there. Also heard that it was a bit hard to find and difficult to get to. I actually was able to find an address for my GPS and had no problems finding it. But getting down to it was as difficult as I had heard. The path down to the cliffs was quite steep and difficult because of leaves, branches. roots, and loose dirt. Not your causal stroll. And once you got to where the rocks started you had a little bit of a climb. But if you made it down you were rewarded with a great sweeping view of the ocean and spitting cave. While waiting for just the right wave to cause the cave to spit I saw a sea turtle and several whales. But for all its beauty and views this is not the place for a causal visit. Both getting in and getting out was difficult. There are no guard rails. And the surface is quite uneven. read more

this is on my top 3 favorite sunset spots on the island! went here with my boyfriend on our last day on o'ahu.. it was PERFECT!! watched the spitting caves until we got the hang of the cycles starting with the awesome whirlpool. then for sunset, we sat on the other side.. found a spot close to the huge disconnected rock in the water and got a nice water show of waves fanning up behind it and then continuing just in front of us to hit the rock walls and spray up higher than our unobstructed view of diamond head and downtown honolulu in the distance. there were only ~10 other people there with us on a friday, some couples and a family with kids. be careful!! we'll be coming back here every time we visit o'ahu. :) read more

The address is correct so don't panic when you get to the end of the road which is a dead end. Just park there and look for a sign between the two house. It's a little hidden path going down to the spitting cave. Make sure you wear tennis shoes if you want to climb down to see the cave closer. There will be a ladder on the left side but be careful. One of the coolest and most amazing places on earth! The spitting cave is breathtaking!! This cave is a bit tricky to find, but once you find it, you will be blown away! The spitting caves is where the ocean smashes against a few huge rocks and there is a cave that the waves go in and the pressure pushes the water out. It's pretty amazing. While we were there we saw a man dive into the water, which in my opinion is crazy, but looks thrilling!! If you are looking for an awesome time and panoramic view and/or picture, make sure to check out the spitting caves! Side note... The cave is only a few miles away from Hanauma Bay. read more

I don't normally call places "hidden gems", but the Spitting Cave of Portlock falls under the definition. It's hard to find, but once you get there, the view is terrific. The photos here on Yelp really don't do it justice; you can't tell from the perspective of the camera, but you're really almost 100 feet up from the ocean. When the water flies out of the cave, you can feel the entire cliff rumble. This place is definitely worth a stop. read more

Cool place to hang out at and watch crazy people jump off the cliff :) I started hiking up the back way to Hanauma Bay, but halfway up the last part of the hill, I decided it was not going to be fun coming down, it was steep and there was lots of loose gravel. Go to China walls instead. To get to this photo op point you have to go down then climb back up a pretty steep hill in between houses. I went to China walls right before this, you can access it much easier and in my opinion, much better view. But this is still pretty cool to visit. read more

Two ways to get there: 1) coastal view by china walls -a lot harder 2) Short path where google maps tells you to go. Prepare to sweat if you go during the day. Parking is everywhere because it is a residential area. If you want to swim bring fins! Overall beautiful and a good workout! read more

Spitting Caves were fun to see and enjoy the coastline without a ton of other people around. We started at the China Walls and worked our way around to the Spitting Caves. It was fun because there weren't other people around and it was pretty mindless, aside from watching your step and not falling into the ocean :) read more

Very beautiful! This is a short walk down a trail in between houses. The short hike is totally worth it. Once you get to the cliffs it is breath taking. Sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. The sounds of the ocean hitting the cliffs. The sounds of the water hitting and then bring spit out of the cave. The views of this island and you can see Molokai. Too many things to list. read more

Insane. I've never swam here. Partly because it looks scary. People jump off the cliff. No thanks. I can barely jump off China Walls down the way and it's not high. But it's pretty and cool to sit up on the cliffs and hang out. read more

Love love love this spot, its perfect for sitting out and watching the waves and the clear blue ocean. Be careful on the hike down its steep and loose dirt and rocks but there is a fence to cling on to, and if u get caught after sunset you might want to bring a flashlight. you can walk all the way around to the right of spitting caves to china walls where its a great spot to jump off and go in the water, watch out for the surfers and climbing back up the rocks. But be careful water and rocks and it can get slippery , but its a great spot to just enjoy the scenery. read more

It's such a sweet escape from the busy world. It actually takes you longer to drive there than walking to the site. The view is breathtaking and the cave is marvelous. You'd be a real risk taker if decide to jump into the ocean from here. The only thing that would make it complete is a large tree covering over this area. read more

What a view and a place to chill with a bottle of wine and picnic lunch/dinner! Waves were mild when we were there but we did witness a local doing backflips from about 65 ft into the narrowest of openings... Would love to come back and see it at full force. read more

After reading the other Yelp reviews, I went here on a weekday night at sunset (my birthday). It was wonderful! One of the reasons it is getting 5 stars is because there are no tourists present. It really is peaceful and calming. I came across a total of 6 other people on shore plus one person kayaking during the one hour I was there. I highly recommend going if you enjoy site seeing, photography, or tranquil places. I wore hiking sandals to be on the safe side. I'm glad I did because as others mentioned, the area is littered with broken bottles. Sturdy shoes will also make exploring easier if you decide to climb around to different areas. I followed the directions that someone else posted and was able to find it without any problems. Basically, just go to the end of Lumahai Street and you'll see a small opening on the right side of the road with a sign in front of it. This is the entrance. I will definitely return! read more

This spot is absolutely amazing. If you have time just come and relax and watch the power of the waves as they slam into the rocks. Amazing views of the ocean and you can see Diamond Head in the distance. If you look carefully you may catch a glimpse of sea turtles. I saw one while sitting. read more

In about the last 18 months, 3 young people have died here, all who have jumped from the cliff. Oahu lifeguards are consistently making rescues which if the lifeguards weren't there, would have resulted in fatalities. Although this is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset from, it is a highly dangerous spot to go into the water. It is not worth the adrenaline rush because it will quickly go away as you are frantically trying to stay above water. The surf and the currents are very strong, likely if you are not from here, it is like nothing you have experienced before. Don't jump! We don't want another fatality! read more

I stayed locally and went on a few early morning runs with the Pitting Caves as my destination. They're really cool to watch (for like 5 minutes)!! Great destination for a jog, especially if you don't want your heart rate to drop too much before turning around. Aloha! read more
