I signed up for a woodworking half-day workshop to make an uber-cool T-shelf (book shelf) via WeTeachme.Com at splinter and callous. It is run by two men that are quite passionate about woodworking and have been holding workshops since April. You have the options of learning how to make a fire pit, a bench, T-shelf, bottle holder, cheese board and clothes rack. apparently, this place is crowd sourced and you can also book through a crowd sourcing website for less than half the price I booked it for (but then again I'm the kind of person that never gets anything on sale - SADLY!). You learn how to use a power saw to cut your two pieces of board into triangles. Unlike me, make sure you have your power saw running before you cut through the wood or it's going to move in the reverse direction and perhaps cut something (maybe yourself) on the way. Then, you get to use the router (a spinning drill like thing) used to make slits in your pieces of wood. Then to the drilling machine to make holes. Put your book shelf or coffee table or bedside table together using plastic ties. Make sure your sand your finished product. And voila you're done! If you have your own project, you can use the space to work on it too! :) read more

Splinter & Callous is an urban wood and metal workshop where people find their inner maker with expert guidance from master craftsmen.
History
Established in 2016.
Splinter & Callous is a wood and metal workshop where people find their inner maker with expert guidance from master craftsmen. In January this year we opened our first workshop in Fairfield, Melbourne. We bought a few tools and machines, started working with local craftsmen and designers, and invited our friends in to build their first projects. It has been a massive success. Our friends love it, our craftsmen and designers are excited, and we've learnt so much about making it an awesome experience for members. We successfully reached our crowdfunding target, and now we're working towards opening a bigger and better workshop closer to the inner city, aiming to be ready by Spring. We're still running build projects up until we move, so come on in and be part of the movement.
Meet the Business Owner: Sheldon W.
Splinter & Callous was founded in 2015 by Sheldon Walters. Up until then, Sheldon had been an IT Engineer who felt he was missing out on something by working in an office all day. Spending long hours working on abstract projects with no tangible outcomes, he developed a longing to do something hands-on. Unable to find a place that taught skills in both wood and metalwork, with the flexibility to do it at a time, place and pace that fitted into his life, he decided to do something about it. So together with a colleague and friend, Mike Simpson, they founded Splinter & Callous. Opening permanently in mid 2016, Splinter & Callous is a wood and metal workshop where people find their inner maker with expert guidance from master Craftsmen. It's a communal place where everyday people can learn real skills while building well-crafted things and connecting with others across a workbench. In contrast to the office environment many people find themselves in, Splinter & Callous gives you
