    Outdoor green area

The building is nice with a playground, but the restrooms themselves are tiny and unclean.

This was a lovely and simple rest stop that featured plenty of parking, shade, picnic benches and covered areas to eat while on the road. There's something nostalgic and simple about rest stops that I really appreciate...similar to visitors centers for national parks. Ha, I also enjoy big blown up maps and Spoon River Rest Area didn't disappoint on this front. In the main lobby of the rest area they ad a large map with plenty of natural light flooding in to enjoy the view. Last but certainly not least, the bathrooms were very clean.

sad business program supposed to be a benefit for the blind. you have lazy DHS supervisors going through the motions not surprising

NOT CLOSED AS OF MARCH 26TH 2019. DON'T KNOW HOW OLD THIS REVIEW IS WHERE YELPERS REPORTED IT CLOSED.. IT WAS CLOSED FOR REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE BUT IT'S OPEN AS OF A FEW DAYS AGO a nice rest area for the most part bathroom wise. the maintenance staff do a good job it's an older one. the grounds are really nice it has a walking path that leads up to a set of stairs with an overlook to a valley seasonally open.. now for the real downside: like all of Illinois rest areas that useless department of human Services is in charge of the vending. they have the program for the blind which is fine the problem lies in the fact that the supervisors are not worth a damn. I have been to so many over the last couple years Illinois rest areas where they do not keep up the vending areas what's proper unexpired stock.. here will be a bunch of pictures showing what I found on this day March 26th 2019 and some pictures of who the department of human Services blind are vending program. I think the most disgusting thing for me about this one here eastbound at spoon River is the fact that there was not only so much expired shit but the fact that there was an appalling dates on them some recently expired some going back six months..so if you decide to use the facilities think twice before you purchase anything out of the vending machines in Illinois you're better off to drive up the road 5 or 10 minutes and usually there's a exit with a gas station and services especially in Illinois for the most part. but the thing that really pisses me off is after showing the attendance who are not responsible for the vending it's the Illinois department human Services vending program for the blind what made me so sick was the fact they said they were just here a day or two ago and I'm like you got to be shiting me.. really even they had some eye-openers at some of the expired stuff sitting in the machines. as far as keeping the grounds clean they do a great job they keep the bathrooms nice and tidy to it's a nice quiet place to park for the night and sleep but I do suggest have your own kind of food there cuz you don't know what you're going to get and this isn't the only Illinois rest area that's done it a few years ago can I look through my Yelp and I remember those one on i-39 same problem and sure enough my review still there somewhere in my Yelp feed... but I'm going to continue to review not only here but on Google and to their Illinois DHS homepage citing example after example when I do stop it Illinois rest areas and find expired product that's supposed to be changed out on a regular basis.. other state rest areas I go to seem to do just fine 90% of the time.. even South Carolina has a department for the blind and they have theirs up-to-date but hell I live in Illinois so I'm not surprised I know how DHS works sadly in anything they do..SMH

My friend made the mistake of putting the $50 hold on her credit card. When I tried to check out at 6 AM (friend was sleeping), I wasn't able to pay for her room because of this $50 charge on her card. What?? The early morning clerk was a young lady with no knowledge and no power. She offered to call her manager but at 6 AM that seemed like a bad idea. I knocked on my friend's door but she was still sleeping. So for this little simple thing, we were very inconvenienced and it took me too long to get going on the road. I just opened my credit card bill two weeks later to find that $50 security charge on my card still there. I had to call this morning and they told me they didn't know anything about it. They removed it, they said but I don't see it. They advised me to call my bank. Sure, I should spend a long time on the phone because on their policies? No, thanks. I don't know if I would stay here again. I don't want to have to go through all the hassles and phone calls to pay. Seems as though the company could simplify this somehow.

This one was surprisingly and shockingly clean so that's the reason for the four stars. Also for a weekend it was relatively quiet and peaceful. Check in with simple and easy. The bathroom was clean the towels were good. I would stay there again if I had to be in doctors in that area again.

Fast forward to 2022, and after taxes I paid $165/night. I knew the prices went up but dang, that is incredible! Upon further consideration, I'm kind of annoyed. For those of you unfamiliar with the area-YOU ARE NOT IN CHICAGO! Chicago is still almost 2 hours away. Even Starved Rock is 30 minutes away. Princeton, I'm sorry to say, is not a cultural epicenter full of attractions that draw people in and away from a city that does have those things. In the past, I've appreciated the amount of effort that goes into decorating the lobby for Christmas. Now I'm thinking that if half the effort was put into the rooms, versus the lobby, we may be getting a little closer to the cost vs quality ratio. I did notice that room had vinyl flooring and zero carpet. I liked that, as we all know how icky carpet can be. Yet the dated panther picture was way too reminiscent of items available at a local truck stop. The linens weren't extra snuggly and there is no variety in the pillow department. Unfortunately, that left me with a crick in the neck and wishing I had brought my own. Moving along, there is a pool in this inn. I saw signs that said, "The spa is closed", so I think that was referring to said pool. The free breakfast is still being served to you by employees, which makes for long lines. Waffles are no longer available on the weekend either. What? So you're telling me all the amenities of staying in the Americinn are not available and you want to charge people more? How very American of you! You may think I'm being snarky. You may think my expectations are too high. Duh! All other places that charge that kind of money have extras that make your stay lovely. Snuggly linens, firm/soft selections of pillows, warm cookies when you check-in, etc. I will no longer stay at the inn, I'd rather drive the 2.5 hours back home than drop that kind of cash. After all, I come to this area because it's where I grew up. I know the demographics of customers is probably a mixture of: extended family of residents in surrounding communities, truck drivers, and a business person here or there. All that to say, this area is full of hard-working people. They aren't about that big city life, tossing money around, and treating themselves. Why would your rooms cost so much? Okay, enough of the rant. I will put my money where my review is and no longer pay these ridiculous prices.
