I worked hours there in exchange for getting lessons. My knee got hurt during practice and found out I have Elhlers Danlos syndrome. I told them I have EDS. One of the people that owns the place said oh people get hurt a lot. I said yeah but exercise is still good for you. They completely ghosted me. Refused to answer my calls and messages. I still have credits for lessons and they won't answer me at all. I got ghosted for taking lessons or working there when they found out I got hurt and have a disability. Ahhhhhhh this place. I'm so glad it exists and I really hope they are able to open up group dance lessons again soon. There are not many places to dance ballroom or west coast swing, so I'm very thankful for this place. It's hard to find... tucked away in an industrial park. There is a lot of free parking. I needed my dance to be choreographed for my wedding so after some classes with Christine, I asked her if she could be my choreographer. Christine is so great. She's really nice, patient and was very nice corrected our dance moves. Christine thoroughly studied my song. She even memorized the lyrics which was great when we would practice the routine for certain measures and she knew precisely what the moves were at any point of the song. I really liked how she choreographed our dance! It's very well put together and she customized it based on the moves we like and don't like. They have social dances. They really go all out for holidays and themed dances. Their Halloween decorations is not for the faint at heart. Even the bathroom was decorated with red stained signs like "keep out"! I opened the door to use the restroom and ran right out after seeing the decorations in there. Needless to say, I didn't use the restroom. All the dance instructors there are very nice. If you do the group classes, don't worry about bringing a partner, you will partner up and switch partners throughout the class. Everyone here is really friendly too. No one judges you on your level of experience and everyone there is just to have fun and learn. Christina at Spotlight Ballroom is amazing! My husband and I did a series of 10 private dance lessons with her before our wedding. My husband is not a dancer and was less than thrilled about the idea of taking dance lessons. However, he enjoyed the experience from the first lesson and is now interested in taking more. Christina helped us feel confident on the dance floor. She taught us how to move around the dance floor and different moves to add in to make our dance more interesting. One of my favorite places to dance at, and I have been coming (especially to their Midtown Stomp nights) whenever I could for the past ~4 years. As others have said, their location often doesn't give you the entry place correctly on maps, so just put in the address for Chando's on Boatman and then it's just across the street from it. The swing dance lessons and crowd are always my favorite, but occasionally I do other forms of dance- the instructors and management are some really great people. I don't plan to stop dancing any time soon, and I'm so glad that they're now open (with safety requirements) despite the pandemic. read more

My boyfriend and I have been dance club hopping, and have only just been here. We meant to go much sooner, but their calendar was hard to manage. A brief chat with the staff, and I got the date of their next West Coast Swing lesson and party, and we danced the night away! I have never felt so free and un-judged. As well, there was zero creep-factor. The instructor was a whiz, and despite being young knew every inch of what he was teaching. He gave honest feedback, consistent demonstrations, and didn't show-off overly much. (He was cute, though.) I appreciated that every minute of class was positive and functional, with no wasted time for the teacher to sort out his lesson or laugh at his own jokes. We plan on coming back for every WCS event, and maybe even getting bold and branching out. I rarely feel comfortable pushing my skillset, but this is the absolute best place in Sacramento to do it. read more

Hubster and I were given dance lessons as a pre-wedding gift a few years ago and we were delighted with the lessons we got here from Christina. She's a sweet, super cute and tiny little thing with loads of energy and patience for those who have no rhythm at all on the dance floor. I have to say one negative about this place is the location. My gps takes me in some alley, I almost missed it the first couple times I went. They don't have a neon sign or anything just that banner out front. I signed up for a private/lessons/dance package. Walter is a great instructor, professional and friendly. So you must must must go ask a guy to dance if you are a girl unless you are one of those shyish wallflowers or you will not really get to dance. or dun dun dun (ominous sound effect here) you will dance over and over with weirdos (this was a tip one of the girls gave me, 'say no thnx I'm going to sit this one out or they will prey on you the new person cos every other girl has said no to them'). My wife and I decided we wanted to have our wedding dance choreographed, which was really aggressive since neither of us has ever been a dancer. I called Spotlight and purchased the wedding package. Our instructor, Ikhlas, was fantastic! He was so patient and so positive that we couldn't help but look forward to our lessons. The people and the facility are great. Very friendly people and the group dance lessons for beginners on fridays are sweet. They teach you like 5 types of dances with a dance party happening throughout the night. So, yeah...you'll see me there whenever POSSIBLE. My now husband and I do not have a lot of dance experience, so we were nervous about our first dance and wanted it to look nice. We searched different wedding dance lesson packages in Sacramento. Spotlight Ballroom had the best package and was helpful setting everything up. As other people said, it was hard to find, I recommend putting Chando's (West Sacramento) location in google maps, the dance studio is right across the street in the back corner in the parking lot. We started with a half hour trial with Tarah, she was so patient and helpful. We booked the wedding dance package. She came up beautiful choreography and worked with us to perfect it! She gave constructive feedback and suggestions to improve our dance. She also got to know us and the way we learned, she adjusted her instructions based on this. She also thought us some other dances during our last lesson so we would be able to dance to some other songs as our wedding. We look forward to going back for group lessons in the future! read more

Very upset with the way spotlight ballroom handles business. We are relocating due to my job last minute and Spotlight REFUSED to give me a full refund on my pre-purchased dance lessons which were a Christmas present to my wife. When asking to speak with a supervisor she refused to refund the full amount and apparently she claims she spoke to the owners and they also refused to refund in full. Bought a dance package for some dance classes. Right away I received an e-mail to take some private lessons. I went to several of the dance classes to watch their instructors. The instructors simply went through the motions with an assistant whom already was familiar with the dance steps. Instructors did not break down the steps from the syllabus nor do they allow the students to learn the routine. Rather, instructors tried to showcase their dance skills by doing a routine quickly expecting students to know it. Sounds impressive to amateurs. However, interviewed several competitive dancers/teachers from various dance studios. Accordingly, Spotlight dance instructors could not backup their dance skills because none have won any competitive dance such as Blackpool, instructors did not break down the dance step syllabus, and instructors are greedy to suck you in for private lessons even though Spotlight instructors are nowhere at the professional level. How could Spotlight instructors give private lessons when they are not at the professional level? How could the Spotlight instructors teach dance? read more

This is my favorite place to dance in Sacramento. I am very excited that Spotlight is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this coming weekend. I love how friendly and welcoming all the dancers and teachers are. Any new dancer will feel at ease and any veteran dancer will be challenged in the higher level classes. I love Spotlight. I've been taking lessons with them almost 3 years now. The instructors are fantastic, whether you are in a lesson at the Spotlight studio or at their Experimental College classes in Davis. I think I've taken lessons with all of their instructors at this point. They will never ever make you feel bad, no matter what! I swear I have two left feet (I quit cheerleading as a child because I had such a hard time with the routines) but at Spotlight I feel like I'm on Dancing with the Stars! The dance floor at Spotlight is a perfect size. There are every level of dancer there, and everyone is extremely friendly. There are no cliques or groups that are just in the corner. Everyone talks with everyone and dances with each other. I wish I had the time and money to spend more time there! Whether you are an expert, or a complete beginner, you will fit in perfectly at Spotlight! read more

Worst place ever to take your fiancé that's never taken a dancing class. Ladies, you know how tough it is to find a man who's willing to learn ballroom dancing with you. So, when he finally agrees to go, you want it to be the best experience ever. First off, the teacher started off the class by asking everyone to show her what they already knew. Right off the bat, that made us feel awkward while everyone else seemed to have prior knowledge. The instructor was unfocused, she kept trying to crack jokes that weren't funny (she said her name was America, not sure if that was true or not), and was rushing us to know a bunch of steps in 45 min. before the dance. Not once did she play music during the lesson, and she kept messing up on her instructions that another student was able to point out. The website says Beginner's Party, but that's not completely true. They divide the floor into Intermediate and Beginners for the lesson portion. So, just be aware that the dance has both levels. I don't mind that but the beginner's class should feel like a beginner's class and not an intermediate. There's a free lesson before the dance if you pay the cover charge. My fiance was still learning the first steps when she was already moving onto turns and fancier moves. Which caused him to freeze up. He tried expressing his frustration but then this stupid lady said, well if you can't get the box then you shouldn't be here. Several students snickered and I was so upset I wanted to leave right then. The instructor did not say anything to that woman to point out that what she said was not appropriate for a beginners class. Nor did she take the time to help him figure out where he was having trouble. Instead she took his partner away for that segment and practiced with her. Which left him feeling even more awkward. We left as soon as the lesson was over with. I've taken many lessons in my day, and I never met any instructor more unprofessional. We definitely didn't feel it was an atmosphere that made people less knowledgeable about ballroom dancing feel comfortable. Fortunately, my fiancé is willing try again at a different venue. Maybe the instructor was drinking beforehand, or maybe we should've come during a regular lesson but this place was not a match for us. read more

Amazing staff and group of people. They are inviting and treat you like family. My friend introduced me to Spotlight because he needed an extra dancer for a pirate dance routine. After the first lesson, I was hooked. If you're bored or just need something to do to escape your life, going to Spotlight and getting involved here is a great choice.
