We stopped in around 11:30am on a Sunday and there were some regulars drinking and hanging out. The barkeeper made sure we had drinks right away and we started with some cask ales and I switched to Guinness for my second beer. The booths are velvet and it gives off old school vibes in a fun way. As we stayed longer more people made their way through and it was fun listening to the banter and sipping on some good beer. Amazing Salt Beef sandwiches for lunch, London Pride on Tap, and the Best pint of Guinness about a few weeks ago and came back for a night to check it out, with friends. The staff are all lovely and welcoming, Monday night was Vinyl night, great night out. Not too busy but a good amount to have a good atmosphere. Cannot fault this pub at all, will be back again soon. It's a must visit if in brick lane area.

I went to this pub with a friend on a Thursday evening at around 6pm and we were the only ones there at the time except for two people at the bar. The chairs and tables look like they came straight from the house of a great grandmother and the walls are covered in old fashion portraits. The dim lighting combined with kitschy design made for a lovely experience. To break up the silence we put a few songs on the jukebox. When I went up the second time it took my money. After telling the lovely American lady at the bar what happened, she promptly called up the jukebox company and someone was out within an hour to fix it. She was ever so friendly and gave us loads of free songs in the meantime. I just though I would mention this as that kind of service is quite rare in a pub. So if you are around the Columbia Rd. area, I suggest taking time out and sitting down for a beer at the Nelsons Head.

For some reason the owner seems to have a mild obsession with cats. I really love kitty-cats, and so does my other half...but we still found this quite strange! The less-lovely bits: - My boyfriend didn't like his ale (he normally loves to try interesting/less-well known beers/ale so this surprised me) - The food wasn't very impressive at all. We tried one of their handmade burgers and lamb chops. I wasn't blown away by either, and thought the portions were terrible considering the price! We finally got back to the UK in December 2022 and so I'm adding in some reviews from then along with other reviews from before and after our time in the UK. It's a Young's pub, which are generally good, characterful places, and always stocked with excellent cask Young's ales (although the brewing line and pub chain are now separately owned). This is one of the best Young's pubs we've been to, also. The place is an historic pub with much of its original decor, including swivelling frosted-glass "snob screens" over the bar. It's worth a visit for this reason alone for any fan of traditional British pubs. Service is consistently very good to excellent, friendly and efficient. Food is consistently excellent. Most recently in December, we had Sunday roasts, always something we look forward to when in Britain. On one occasion, we had the lamb roast, on another the roast beef. Both were excellent, with great yorkshires, gravy, root veg, etc. They consistently have excellent Young's cask ales in excellent condition - the right temperature and well kept. Any beer lover should visit for that reason. Young's Original Bitter and Special Bitter (both outstanding classic English pale ale/bitter) are always available. In winter, they have cask Young's Winter Warmer, an excellent, stronger, darker ale, and one not easily found elsewhere that reliably.

Be prepared to duck when going from room to room -- the ceilings are quite low! The service is awesome and the food is delicious. I've gotten the steak and ale pie with chips, the mezze plate, and fish & chips. The food all tastes very high quality and almost anything you could order will be delicious. They have a big event tent in the back that they use for either extra restaurant seating or to rent out. Our family hosted a wedding celebration for us back there and they let us bring our own food, cake, and decorations, but had a bar window open so everyone could still order drinks from them. It was the perfect space and we enjoyed every second. The owners rock!

The locals are rowdy but friendly. Drawbacks? Well they did have Karaoke on a Saturday night however, which while like torture for me, is something I believe many people enjoy. I was pretty excited about the aforementioned ingredients and price tag- no more than £7.50 for a pie. Unfortunately I was told a few minutes later the courgette had run out. No bother I thought. I asked for butternut squash to replace the courgette topping, thinking all the rest of the courgette pizza ingredients- tomato sauce, goat cheese etc- would remain. Apparently my order was totally misunderstood bc when I got home and opened the boxes (lesson learned to check orders before you leave!) I saw I was given two butternut squash pizzas. Arghhhh. This might be ok if the pizzas had flavour. But they didn't. Despite the crispy kale and chunks of ricotta, it's an incredibly bland pie. The only saving grace is the nice sourdough pie base- sour and chewy. So now I have tons of extra pizza I don't want. Sigh, once again pizza in London fails me.

And it also has a tummy-rumble-inducing range of affordable pub-style food in its restaurant, run by Michelin-trained head chef Will Pugh no less. We were lucky enough to be invited to the launch. I say invited, it was utter CARNAGE! Best night i've had in ages! There were hundreds of people there; but, as with the tardis, it's exterior belied it's interior and though the booze was free-flowing ALL NIGHT it was actually pretty okay to navigate the crowds and to get served at the bar! As I think i just mentioned the booze was flowing VERY freely, and I'm still battling the subsequent hangover, so bear with me if the details are somewhat hazy. What i can remember is that the space is HUGE, i means MASSIVE and there are (thankfully, for my work-0weary limbs) plenty of booths for more intimate drinking/eating, larger, long tables with bench seating against the open floor to ceiling windows - perfect for groups and which make you feel like you're almost outside when you're inside - with the requisite outdoor tables/seats for smokers. The ladies toilets are a dream (can't speak for the gents i'm afraid), always a good sign! Oh, and check out the backroom: a sleazy porn speakeasy of a hideaway - let's hope they do lots of secret lock-ins!! Match this with friendly (and super pretty - boys & girls natch) bar staff and laid back security Barworks (the brains behind Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, The Diner and the Black Heart in Camden) have done it again! What more could you want. I can't think of a better way to quench my summer heatwave induced thirst. Being a canny lass I have discovered vouchers online for 50% off your a la carte food bill from 20th July to 20th August!

We just left the pub. It's a bit manky inside, with the tables actually chained to their chairs, everything tatty and worn, and not really in a nice way. The White Hart (across the street) was mostly reserved, and the other pub nearby was closed (!) so the Beggar was rammed. There was a queue for drinks. Clientele was older and very white, as I expected. Service was glacial and not particularly welcoming. Not surly - just... meh. They were out of Guinness. My husband ordered me my large glass of Malbec anyway. It was disgusting plonk, for $9.80 - and to top it off, the glass was none too clean. Ugh. I downed a few gulps and we left. We won't be back.
