There was rain and wind on the first third or so of it, which got worse before it got better. By the time I got to the last fourth or fifth of the trail before reaching the actual lake, it became very cool, gray, and very rainy. Thankfully it hadn't been raining long so it wasn't too muddy but it clearly can get that way, especially along the short descent down the hill with a couple switchbacks just before you get to the lake. When I actually got to the lake, it was full on raining and even sleeting a bit. I took some pictures with my raincoat on, and it was still really cool in a moody way, but it was very wet. By the time I got about two thirds of the way back to the trailhead, it cleared all the way up and became quite sunny. By the time I got back to my car at the trailhead parking lot, there was no rain, no clouds in the sky except over the tetons in the far distance, and it was fairly warm. Overall, it was a beautiful trail both going there and coming back so no regrets, but do come prepared!

When looking at the Tetons, if you choose the route to the left, much steeper on the way to the lake than the route from the right. Neither is wrong. Beautiful hike, terrain, and views. We happened to hike after recent storms so some parts of the path were puddled with water. Made it fun with either walking through or around. All fun. Relatively easy hike but incredible so don't miss. The water in the lake is so clear and beautiful it makes you want to jump in but you know it's colder than a witches tit!

Parking can be a bit tricky. I was actually worried we wouldn't be able to find parking when we planned to visit one evening because parking was difficult to find earlier in the afternoon, so we decided to Uber from our hotel and back. We wanted to catch the town square shootout they put on every evening. Very cute little show that lasts maybe about 15 minutes. They sell some drinks and snacks as a fundraiser as well. Jackson Town Square is not to be missed when in Jackson!

Jackson's Town Square is the heart of Jackson, WY and a must-see when visiting the area. The square…read morehas a charming Western feel, with shops, restaurants, and plenty of places to relax while taking in the mountain-town atmosphere. The most unique feature is the famous elk antler arches at each corner of the square. Made from thousands of shed elk antlers collected from the nearby National Elk Refuge, these gates are an iconic symbol of Jackson and make for a great photo opportunity. A fun place to walk around, enjoy the local character, and experience a little piece of Jackson's history.

I would strongly recommend it,…read morebut just be aware that the parking is competitive at Jenny Lake visitor center because it's the most popular in the park (despite there being a massive parking lot with an overflow area). One of the nice things about this visitor center is that there are clean bathrooms with running water, food, options, and gift stores. The lake itself is absolutely stunning, and you have two options to get to hidden Falls - you can either do the actual trail, which takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, or you can take the ferry shuttle across the lake ($20 I think), which cuts your trip down by a solid mile or two. In fact, it ends up only taking maybe 15 to 20 minutes of an uphill walk to get to hidden Falls from where the ferry dock is after you ride it. Honestly, though, I think that the hike itself is absolutely worth it because the views around the lake itself are absolutely stunning! I think if you only do one hike in Grand Teton National Park, this should be it.

It's popular so be mindful; I took turns with several other folks and we took pics for each other. The creek and vegetation with the mountains in the background is stunning, and if you come early when the water is still, you can get a pic with an insane reflection of the mountains in the water. It's quite an accessible area of the park, definitely a must stop. Of note, there is a NP bathroom here but no running water. Plenty of parking when I came on a Sunday in may but I'm under the impression it can fill and you may have to park a little further away.

The LSR Preserve is near Phelps Lake and has a visitor center. I like driving to the Preserve on Moose-Wilson Road because there is all sorts of wildlife and natural features to be seen. You can also hike through this area. I parked and walked all the way to the visitor center while taking in the amazing views. The trail is surrounded by a sagebrush meadow. Lake Creek flows out of Phelps Lake and is a short walk from the visitor center. The visitor center ended up being closed when I arrived. It is in a wood building and offers ranger-led programs, trail information, weather, and information on Mr. Rockefeller's vision for the Preserve. The LSR Preserve is a beautiful area and worth checking out when open.

Two of my buddies and I did snow school with Exum on 6/30/13. We were going to backpack the Teton…read moreCrest Trail starting the following day, and having no prior experience with alpine hiking, snow skills, self arrest, etc., we forked over the $170 each for an all day snow school session. We met our guide Mike and the assistant/training guide Pete at the base of the tram in Teton Village. There was one other person in snow school that day, a female who was going to summit the Grand that week, also with Exum. After introductions and gear distribution (helmets, ice axes, and crampons), we took the tram up. We had to hike about 2 miles left after getting off the tram to get to a snow covered high slope where we could practice on. That's when the "fun" began. Let me summarize: Snow school was TOUGH, both physically and mentally. I guess because of the somewhat benign-sounding name it conjured up images of making snow angels and snowball fights for me, but it was definitely not like that. All day we learned valuable alpine hiking skills -- e.g. traversing across steep snow, walking straight up and down steep snow, stopping a slide with hands and feet, and of course, self arrest -- feet downhill on stomach, feet downhill on back, head downhill on stomach (the hardest for me), and head downhill on back. This was tough and tiring stuff. But definitely valuable at the same time, all three of us felt much more comfortable by the end of the day. We also learned proper crampon use (even though we did not take crampons on our hike with us). We were spent at the end of the day, and the 2 mile mostly uphill hike back to the tram was brutal. But it was all worth it, definitely worth it. We had a safe and uneventful TCT backpacking trip starting the next day, and I honestly don't know if we'd have been able to complete it had we not done snow school with Exum. Mike and Pete were both excellent, good teachers, austere yet nice, and patient. I highly recommend Exum for those new to alpine hiking and mountaineering.

As a beginner to climbing, I was really looking forward to a motivating and supportive experience…read moreon my Grand Teton climb with Exum and our guide, Aili. Day 1 went well, with the climbing portion being successful, and Aili was happy with our (my husband's and my) climbing skills. I was upfront with my guide from the start, explaining that I prefer to hike at my own pace, which was a major reason we opted for a private guide. However, from the very beginning of the hike, I felt judged and had to constantly deal with negative comments (e.g., "come back next year," "we can go back and try to do some other climb"), implying I wouldn't make it and that my pace wasn't going to work. The guide informed me that if I couldn't complete a 5,000 ft elevation gain in 5 hours, I wouldn't be allowed to attempt the summit. I requested the option to at least hike to the Lower Saddle and allow my husband to continue to the summit, but I was told this wasn't possible. The guide insisted that with my pace, by the time we'd reach the saddle, I'd be too tired for a summit attempt, and it would be a long day. All I received were reasons why it wouldn't work, and not once did I hear suggestions on how to make the best out of this attempt. Eventually, I had to turn back halfway to at least allow my husband to get a fair attempt at the summit. The guide never attempted to understand my potential and was very demotivating throughout the experience. I'm not a novice hiker. This year alone, I've hiked the Manitou Incline , Barr Trail up to Barr Camp, a 13er in Colorado, and just two months ago, I summited Kilimanjaro. I was fully prepared to endure a long day and give my best effort, but I wasn't even given a fair chance. The overall experience was disheartening. This is my second year with Exum attempting this climb, and it's clear that Exum and their guides are not suited for beginners who are looking forward to a more personalized and life-changing experience. I do have to give credit for teaching instructions.
