PART 2 OF 2 (SEE GOOGLE REVIEW FOR PART 1) Speaking of Covid, that leads to the next occurrence. Three family members went to visit PD, again on a Saturday evening. She had been coughing almost incessantly at night and was being given cough medicine. Concerned, and hoping the doctor might be able to prescribe her a more therapeutic medication, I went to the Nurses' Station and asked to speak to the Unit Nurse. She was not there, so another nurse looked around for a few minutes, then took a message from me to please stop by my sister's room because I had a question. I waited until closing time (8:15pm actually), and the nurse never appeared. The very next day (Sunday), I received a call informing me that my sister, PD, had tested positive for Covid, and that I, along with the two other visitors, should follow Covid protocol. In the meantime, my sister's roommate was removed from the room, and another patient (presumably also Covid positive) was moved in. That very next day, I was called again by a Nurse J and informed that my sister did NOT have Covid. I was totally confused (and this is interesting since one of the diagnoses on the paperwork I have indicates Covid). Furthermore, she was unable to get her scheduled chemotherapy at Cooperman Barnabas because she was so weakened as a result. Meanwhile, the facility doctor, Dr. Z came to see PD on Tuesday, during which time PD called me so I could talk to the doctor. When I told her about the Covid confusion, she was not happy because there was no ISOLATION protocol on the door, she had not been informed and she was sitting with my sister, unmasked. She was quite unhappy. Dr Z said she would get clarification and told me to call the Unit Nurse, which I did. She identified herself as Nurse J (another one or same, I don't know) and repeatedly claimed that there was signage on the door and isolation protocol was being followed. I then questioned why if my sister no long had Covid. She went into a lengthy and unconvincing speech about the nurse who called probably meant that PD no longer had Covid. I also questioned how a trained doctor, who I'm sure could read, would miss the signage on the door. Of course, she could not explain that. During all of this time, I was trying desperately to get my sister relocated to a facility closer to me. When I asked her where she wanted to be she responded, "anywhere, but here!" I'm not trying to suggest that there are not good, hard-working staff members who care about their patients because I know there are such people in this facility. However, there are also those, especially in the evenings and on weekends who don't have the compassion or perhaps, training, that is needed. And, in spite of all of these problems, the one thing that happened on time was when PD had to switch to a different healthcare provider and there was an uncovered week in between her old insurer and the new one, so she was responsible for payment for that week. Bright and early that morning, someone was in her room to receive the payment. I don't have to say how this made my sister feel: "that it's all about the money, not patient care." I was finally successful in overcoming Medicare's bureaucracy and my sister was relocated to a beautiful facility in Connecticut. Unfortunately, she died two days later. Horrific !!! Our family member spent three weeks in Spring Hill for rehab care and it was an absolute nightmare. Nursing care was non existent! Wounds were left unbandaged, call bells went hours without being answered very often my husband was left unattended for hours. When he called home to advise me he needed help and no one answered his call bell I called Spring Hill and was hung up on !! When I finally asked for a meeting with the nursing and PT staff to discuss I was told he was to be discharged the next day! STAY AWAY from " Shady Hill ". PS . Having left my husbands wounds improperly managed he ended up back in the hospital for 6 weeks with infections necessitating multiple surgeries . Please avoid if at all possible !! I wish I could leave negative stars !! read more

Please think twice before placing a loved one here. It would take a month to share how egregious the care here is from the non- responsive and callous social workers to the horrible administrative details and medical record keeping, careless administering of medication and lack of urgency to any matters. Unless you are there to oversee everything, your loved one may leave worse off than the day they were admitted. Day one: Listed on my mother's medical records that she had "afib.:" She DOES NOT AND NEVER HAD AFIB. I asked three times for this to be removed. It never was. It was still on her record when she was discharged. They also listed a stroke history - ALSO NOT TRUE OR IN ANY MEDICAL RECORDS. Forgot about ever seeing an actual doctor. They are mysteries who only talk on the phone and text with the nurses. I got three different stories on my mother's doctor. One was "he never comes here, he consults," second was "he sends his nurse practitioner" and third was "he comes early in the morning." Yet no one could show me proof he ever visited my mother in the two months she was there. Medications: On one occasion, a nurse walked into my mother's room and said: "I have your metformin" I said - hold on my mother doesn't take a metformin. She is not diabetic. All I got was an "Oh" and she walked out of the room. Then, it's in my mother's records she is allergic to aspirin, so what do they do? Try to administer it 4x and send her out with a script for it. It shouldn't have happened once, let alone 4x. They also tend to be preoccupied with scrolling on their phones. This results in lack of attention to details, errors and long wait times for care. I had to bring in my own bandages and topical medications to care for a rash and cuts sustained to her legs because they just didn't want to deal with it. The OT cut her leg trying to get her out of bed. This happened on a Thursday. The nurse's response when I asked they clean and dress it was"the wound doctor will be here next week." (the wound doctor is a big mystery too) I said, it can't wait, it needs to be cleaned, treated and dressed now to avoid infection." I had to do this myself until it healed. She also sustained a cut on her other leg and no one would tell me how it happened. They just kept saying they "didn't know." Again, I treated this injury until it healed. Lastly, the PT department discharged her with an ill fitted wheel chair. So more money out of our pockets. I could go on, and will share one last thing. It cost me $450 out of pocket for transport to a post op follow up at the surgeon's office. Got there only to find out that this rehab never fulfilled the X-Ray prescription needed for that appointment. It was a waste of time and a lot of money, and I did not get reimbursed for what was a huge mistake on their part. Watch the bills too......just saying. read more

My mother stayed here for 5.5 days and it was a complete nightmare and she almost lost her life there. The place had a horrible stench, covid outbreak and staff were not wearing gloves, air conditioning in her room not working, leak in her bathroom from the ceiling, room was dusty and never cleaned, they were giving her liquids when had clear instruction that she would aspirate if she drank non-thickened liquids. I would walk in her room and she would be gasping for air and shaking her head. She was not in this condition when she was admitted. After 5 days of misery they told me my mother had trouble breathing and turned blue. This was the last straw. We need to get her out of there. What made matters worse was that I had to argue with the the aide to admit her to the ER that night. Thank god we did because they discovered she had a blood clot and a lung infection. I believe they stopped giving her the blood thinners she was supposed to be taking twice a day and they had no training on how to handle a trach. They had no business accepting a patient with a trach when it was obvious they had no training. She would have died if she stayed there. They were being investigated by medicare while I was there and they blocked me from speaking to the investigators. Do not admit your loved one to this horrific place. Don't be fooled by the fancy decor. This happened over a year ago and we are still traumatized by the experience. read more

Horrible place & always understaffed. Unprofessional and rude. Management? Oh yeah a total joke. Protect your loved ones and do not send them there. My mother's personal belongings were also stolen at this facility. They have no security or cameras. Definitely do your research looks can be very deceiving. I spent two weeks at Atrium Post Acute Care in Livingston. I came directly from the hospital (RWJ Barnabas Health), where I was being treated with IV antibiotics for cellulitis on both legs. The facility is beautiful, with private state-of-the-art rooms that have a loveseat, recliner, small refrigerator and a flat-screen tv. The private bathroom includes a shower and accommodates wheelchair access. There is a movie theatre that seats 24 people. There is also a therapeutic pool with a treadmill in it located in the physical therapy suite. There are activities run by motivated therapists who are constantly assessing the needs of the current patients, and encouraging them to participate and interact with other patients. Some activities are meant to strengthen the mind, while others are more creative. There is something for everyone...(i.e. tye-dying shirts, Black Jack and other card games, dominoes, karaoke, painting, etc.) I had a very positive experience, and regained my mobility through the combined efforts of the therapists and nursing staff who encouraged me. The dietary department was also helpful and sensitive to the fact that I required a low-salt diet. The Director of Nursing was responsiive to my need to have my Parkinson's Disease medication on time, and made sure that the nursing staff knew the importance of this during my stay. read more

A star is an understatement. We just had to fight to get my God Mother out of this horrid facility. The staff is very inattentive and inhumane. She almost died in their care. If you have a relative here please reconsider and do all you can to advocate for their release it is your duty!! read more

Spring Hills could not have been any worse for my mom. While some staff were good, most were absent or dismissive. Twice sent to wrong hospital for procedures. TWICE. Pain was never managed. My mom was sent back to the hospital by a Dr. Alice Tseng for a procedure which is outpatient based to "be admitted" and Morristown was going to send her back.I don't know what this Doctor was thinking and didn't return my phone calls. Because of her poor condition she was admitted and has been there since. She's now transferring to what I hope will be a better fit. My mother never ever complains, but would call me sobbing in the morning in pain. The food was abysmal. One afternoon, she and I could not figure out what the was on the plate. I would feel sick to my stomach when I'd leave my fully independent (one week earlier) mother there. I work in Inpatient Rehab and know what needs to be done with patients seeking to heal after a break, surgery or stroke. This was not my mother's place for that... not in the slightest. read more

This place still haunts me! My father went here to do physical therapy after a hospital stay in 2019. By day three he was no longer able to speak , hold a fork and was hallucinating. He was put on antipsychotic drugs, Benadryl and Xanax . These meds he never took before . He slept in a wheelchair by the nurses station . There was never a doctor around . The staff was useless . He was not given his proper medications. The police were called after 9 days and saw my father bruised , naked , skin and bones . He was treated at St. Barnabus Hospital for dehydration, malnutrition, open wounds from being mistreated. The list can go on and on. My dad came home for thanksgiving only to die in front of my mom a week later. Please do NOT send your family member to this place . He even went to the hospital by their doing and was given a bag of fluids and ST. Barnabus released him back to their care . When I called emergency room it was too late. The police had did a wellness check too but it was after 8 PM and they were told he was fine so they left. It was a nightmare ...we were trying to find a new rehab facility and move him . He never did go for physical therapy at the Atrium . My father was to drugged up .. please get a list of meds everyday to see what your family member is getting . This place is a living nightmare . The name changed to Spring Hills . When We filed a complaint it was called the Atrium Post acute Care of Livingston Nj ... I miss my father everyday . It's unconscionable what went on there and what they did to my father. He was a normal man just needing PT . Zero zero stars . read more

Direct competition for Care One aka Care None. Brand new beautiful facility. But all show and no substance. Nursing aides are old, tired, and overweight. They move like inpatients. Doctors, nurses, and aides do not listen to patient's concerns. Some of my concerns are very serious - missed, wrong, and incorrectly dosed meds. I was there a while and missed a critical medication my whole stay. I had no choice but to have family bring it into the facility so was able to take it. A big no no for medical facilities! But i had no choice! All the nurses and aides are overweight and the place looks like an ongoing weight watchers meeting and retirement home for nurses and nursing aides! The the nurses have ADD and when they left to get something never returned to finish responsibilities like giving meds and nursing aids do the minimum and have to return to patient's rooms repeatedly to attend to additional patient's needs that weren't addressed when first requested! They purposely don't give the call button to the patient unless the patient asks for it! It happens all the time! Secondary issues involve food orders. They have you fill out a menu choosing items you want for the coming week which can take up to an hour of your time but then you don't get what you ordered! The PT & OT gyms are new and nice but not fully equipped yet. But they have enough equipment to get the job done. The PT & OT staff are good, young, in shape and committed to give you the therapy you need. They are young and enthusiastic and why i gave 2 stars to this facility. There a Therapudic pool but never saw anyone in it - just for show probably! Otherwise staff and facility is a major disappointment. This negative review has nothing to do with the facility being new. It's the staff that will be there after 3 months, a year or 5 years! Their hire stands & practices suck!!! The fact remains the medicare requirements are minimal at best and these facilities don't do any more than Medicare's minimum. read more

I Been to the atrium twice.... a year apart the First time I came there from hospital for rehabilitation which worked well till that previous sickness put me back in hospital and that time was a different hospital and I stayed about almost a year got well and discharged back to Atrium for the second time and I was there some time And thru it all I can say I had some ups and down I had some very Good nurses and some was very nasty But over all staff was pleasant and very helpful especially the aids and because of there inspiration help to help me help myself I am productive and being blessed with well being taking one day at a time in remembrance of my journey and stay with the Atrium Thanking God for guiding to a place that I would get what I needed especially with there therapist staff They was no joke !! I went in on a bed to leaving walking again therapy there works...and I am Happy to say Thank you God first then I Thank you Atrium. read more

I have been here 3weeks week ends lack of care. Every other day care is 89 percent. The rest of the people don't care and ruin it for the ones that go the extra step. I would give them a- Now for the kitchen White Castle is the most gourmet restaurant compared to them food always cold I order 2 fried eggs toasted bagel I get cold eggs and soggy toast. I have been trying to get a med I need for breathing they keep making excuses can not find etc etc Best thing is never need them. Under No circumstances should you or a loved one be subjected to the horrors of this facility! I was admitted by ambulance directly from St Barnabas Hospital in Livingston. (The social worker recommended Atrium). I was being treated for osteo myelitis and sepsis, from which I almost died. Infected blood was circulating through my body and organs due to an untreated infection in my leg. I spent 3 days in intensive care after 2 operations, and 3 weeks in other units. On first glance, Atrium is fairly new and beautiful. I was given a private room, also beautiful. But I quickly encountered a staff that was uncaring and often rude. I was still on intravenous pain meds and antibiotics, neither of which were checked or given on time. Since the nursing staff rarely came in to check on me the IV's would run out. Pressing the call button many times usually brought an aide after 20 mins. to 1/2 hr. None of them was certified to change the IV's so I had to wait for a nurse. Another interminable wait. Happened at least twice during the day and also at night. Night staff were even worse. Rude! They gathered outside my room nightly to have a very long and LOUD gabfest. Always woke me up. My complaints to head nurse were ignored. Since I was bedridden I had to use a bedpan whenever nature called. Another very long wait. Had a few accidents because of this. Night staff were furious and left me laying in wet bed clothes and sheets until they decided to come back. To add insult to injury my purse was stolen! I could go on and on....A true nightmare and worst experience of my life. After 4 days of abuse I finally called an ambulance to take me back to St. Barnabas. Another week in hospital. So don't believe the hype. Stay away ! read more

If you love someone do not I repeat do not have them admitted to the Atrium in Livingston NJ. Always, understaffed, patient ratio is approximately 30 patients to 1 nurse, the aides perform the minimum requirements under Medicare guidelines. The call bell is out of reach for the patient to call for help when needed. The staff will ask the patient what medication they are on. If a patient is admitted with a bed sore they are not properly treated which exacerbates the problem. The Administrative/Nursing staff are rude and unprofessional. The facility never answers the main phone line. Personal belongings are lost or stolen. As for, the Food Service Department I would not feed my dog what is served to the patient's, example pancakes with a side of spaghetti, food is always cold. In closing , I would avoid this facility at all cost there is no continuity of care. read more

DO NOT choose this facility. The receptionist was lovely but after that everything went downhill. The staff is rude, unavailable and incompetent. Within 6 hours my husbands condition was getting worse. He was calling me saying it was impossible to get a nurse. When I called the phone rang 30 times. When I asked about my husband they put me on hold for 10 minutes and when they picked up the person yelled at me that I needed to wait. The nurse came on the line and said my husband was doing fine. When I contacted my husband he said how would they know, he had thrown up 2 times and the nurses weren't responding. I spoke to a few of the staff. They all said it's a horrible place to work and they are not treated well. read more

Do not let the exterior walls and nicely updated facility with brand new furnishings fool you about this place. We brought my brother here at the end of June from Kessler Rehabilitation in West Orange and this place made Kessler look like five star hotel. My brother's case was a complex case, and the first that the Atrium has had. He had a ruptured Brain aneurysm back in January in which he had a Craniotomy surgery, and suffered many complications afterwards. A week after that he had a strangulated hernia in which he needed to have two surgeries and was in an induced coma for a month (during this time he suffered several tiny strokes, had sepsis, pneumonia) finally woke up out of the coma and suffered another brain aneurysm given that the doctors were not able to perform and re-coil the aneurysm after the first operation (due to his complications). Fast forward to April, after months of being in ICU at Hackensack hospital, he was at Kesslers where he had a Temporary Tracheostomy, and a feeding tube and was receiving both physical, occupational and speech therapy. When he was admitted to the Atrium (the next step down from Kesslers-- given that the insurances aren't willing to pay to keep you there as inpatient unless you are making significant amount of progress) there were several disturbing events that ensued: 1.) Improper Air conditioning/ventilation in rooms. During the hot summer months of July where temperatures were rising above 95 degrees, the air conditioner in my brother's room didn't work. They moved him to three separate rooms and even sent up maintenance workers several times to try and fix the issue but my family had to bring in a fan to keep the air circulating. Also there were constant leaks from the ceiling in the patient bathrooms. 2.) Improper Discharge Care/Planning. The discharge planning was awful. The social worker, medical director and Head Nurse who were all involved in my brother's case did not coordinate with any third parties to ensure that my brother had his own customized wheelchair (which they measured him for at Kessler, they even turned the wheelchair away when the company delivered it there at the facility stating that they already "got him" a wheelchair (which by the way was too small for him). Everything was left at the last minute, hospital bed, home health aid, ect. It has been two months now since my brother has been home and the case manager and medical director have not returned my sister in laws phone calls. We even had a patient advocate get involved and she hasn't even gotten back to us with an update (which supposedly she was working with them). My brother does not have a wheelchair, nor does he have a home health aid to help my sister in law out. He needs help getting changed, moving around in bed and eating at times. Medicaid got involved and is writing a complaint to the board regarding my brother's care. This is unacceptable that families have to go through this aggravation. 3.) Lack of aides: There are not enough aids to help patients if they need to be fed or assisted 4.) Attending physicians: Since my brother was intubated for several weeks and had a tracheostomy which was since removed, he couldn't fully speak loud, he would only whisper and we questioned the attending physician at the Atrium to see if he should get checked by an ENT and he advised us that it was just the fact that he needed to practice to get more air in his lungs to speak. Fast forward to today, we had him checked by an ENT and they advised that he has a polyp on his vocal cords which is preventing him from speaking. If he doesn't get it removed he won't be able to speak. Thank God we trusted our own instincts and had him checked. If we had known sooner would we would have taken him ourselves. The only good thing about this place were the therapists who were passionate and considerate and did everything to help my brother progress in his therapy. As far as management in concerned, there is no coordination there and you have to constantly be on top of them for updates. If you have a broken leg or arm, I would say go to this place, but if you have underlying medical conditions and cannot fend for yourself, please do not send your loved ones here! They could care less! read more

My uncle was admitted at the Atrium Post Acute Livingston, the care was excellent, a beautiful and modern facility. The care he received was superb from all the staff and help him to recovery and a comfortable stay. I truly believe this is the best Post Acute in the area for care and attention. read more

What a beautiful facility! My uncle was in the facility after his knee replacement. The nursing staff was wonderful and treated him so well! The therapy team there did an amazing job at getting him back on his feet and walking again. The courtyard was such a great place for the family to come and enjoy the day with him. They helped us every step of the way. We highly recommend the Atrium in Livingston to anyone who is looking for a place for there loved one where you know they will be well taken care of. read more

horrible place to be,no good staff,and the food was horrible,i would never recommend this place to anyone,the bathroom leaked water,there's no heat,you don't get your medication at times,the staff is very nasty except for gina,she was very nice,they put gravy on most of your food even when you tell them not too,you have no call button whatsoever,the staff is not americans so they treat you horribly,always have an attitude,never friendly,im sad that my doctor recommended this dump for me,you can never get thru to the nurses,they hide and wont even listen to you,i wanted my clothes washed,they told me the machine was down the whole time,we we're on lock down because some of us caught covid there,what a mess that was,no one came into the rooms to check on us,we had to fend for ourselves,than after two weeks of isolation the nurses and the aids returned to check on us and opened our doors again,then physical therapy began in our rooms,they let outsiders do therapy in march and the covid was so strong,then they locked down the place so no one could have visitors,because covid was now there,smh,these nurses we're not heroes there,they we're nightmares to all,you may have one or two decent nurses that we're americans,but the rest we're absent to the patients,they we're just rude and nasty,they never picked up my food boxes until the next day,serving cold food and drinks all the time,and not following diet restrictions,please don't go thru what i went thru. read more
