Prairieton....small township, population maybe 1300...maybe, 12 minutes from the south side of Terre Haute. Discovered on a Facebook post indicating a "pop-up from 10am-2pm" on the Sunday we showed up, the Red Room Cakery is actually wholesale and not normally open to the public. Lots of cake displays and brag books about, cakes are clearly this guys jam, in addition to the baked goods he sells thru restaurants in a 50 miles radius of his Prairieton ovens. And by "this guy," I am referring to Chef J who is here this day with his side kick employee Olivia. And don't underestimate Olivia and her shy demeanor, as a current student of Purdue's hospitality program and an award winning cake baker from a 4-H event not so long ago, she knows her way around a baked good. I always say "behind every good man is a better woman" and that be Olivia in this case. Chef J could not be more of a sweeter teddy bear type personality if he tried. Kind of a bit unexpected considering that this spot is not normally open to the public, which really means "I have enough business and I would rather not deal with the public." But on this day and in this moment of this pop-up that I show up with my aging folks from Terre Haute, we were treated with real midwestern hospitality...the kind that I have forgotten about living on the west coast and in giant urban cities around the planet. I tend to drill down hard to get to the meat of a business or a person, so after grilling this overgrown teddy bear a bit, Chef J is explaining to me his military career (thank you for your service!) and how he got into cooking before he is inviting me around the back to see the action of the kitchen. The smell of hot sugar and yeast coming from an oven, painting a glaze of a gooey cinnamon concoction on top of the twists baked just so, the perfect amount of flaky crust and mildly doughy center to make this twist Mid-westernly delish. We are consuming one right on the spot before we depart. Some lava cakes for good measure, we walk out with some items to enjoy at home and happy to have made the acquaintance of Chef J and Olivia. And those lava cakes.... Keep in the frig vs the counter and then pop in the microwave for about 30-40 seconds....incredible! Really delicious. The actual establishment is again not normally open, so I am appreciating this unicorn moment. There is no hot coffee option, music chiming in or even many places to sit. Nothing about this spot says "hang out/linger." Rumor has it that Chef J tried pizza for awhile and it just did not catch on. What I clearly know and the greater Praireton area does not....bakers make the best pizzas because the dough is always exceptional. But anyway.... I consider the Red Room Cakery and our unique moment to visit and buy some baked goods moment a big win and really enjoyed taking the trip over from Terre Haute. Chef J is celebrating 10 years of being in business this summer. I am on the look out during all visits now moving forward when in Terre Haute to see if the baked goods served at an eatery come from the Red Room Cakery. Because there they are a little bit delicious and a little bit Midwestern, which makes the perfect baked good in my eyes.

Owner was very down to earth and honest with his suggestions. Also we got to sample a few things, so that's always a plus. Two scoops of ice cream with a cupcake. Another member of our party got a muffin they enjoyed, then our last memeber got a single cupcake and drink. The owner gave us a brownie on the house too. Ended up eating inside and watching a little bit of a cooking show that was on. Along with chatting with the owner. All in all if you want a great environment and treat this is the place to go. Was updated that they will be serving beer and wine soon. Also at some point will be doing soups and sandwiches. I'm sure this business will do great if they keep up the good work!

The restaurant smells of bread and soup as soon as you walk in. This is one of those places that you know is actually handmade as soon as it gets put down in front of you. We all ordered half soup/half sandwich meal. But the portions were huge, honestly. We could have shared. I got the lemon pepper chicken sandwich with chicken rice soup, both were actually incredible. My companions got the Reuben and pasta salad, and the sweet potato soup with turkey Reuben. Everything was great. The sweet potato soup is just that, very sweet, molasses flavor - might not be for everyone. The woman that took our order was very kind She shared some knowledge of their breads with us and even gave us a free load of sourdough to take home. They have many different types of breads, rolls, pastries etc available at the counter for pickup, anytime. Many, if not most, of the menu is turkey. We had one person that didn't eat turkey and specifically ordered the Reuben without turkey. The kitchen ran out of pastrami and put turkey on his sandwich. When she told him about the change, and he mentioned not liking turkey, she said well it's actually chicken anyhow. This was really confusing. He took it off and enjoyed the sandwich, but they should be cautious of changing ingredients without asking because of allergies and preferences. The restaurant is very small, with a few tables for dine in. There is no restroom.

After eating here, I realized that I had completely underestimated this particular cuisine. The title of this restaurant may be alarming at first, but believe me, "oy vey" will be the last thing you say after tasting these delicious dishes. My family and I got two Reubens, Chicken and Rice soup, Borscht soup, Chicken Shawarma, South African Sweet Potato stew, baklava, and latkes all for about 59 bucks. And pretty much everything was homemade. Because of the great quality and quantity of all these items, I ended up stuffed and satisfied. We start off with their Reuben. I had heard much about this dish from other reviews, and it definitely did not disappoint. The corned beef was well-seasoned, and the sauerkraut was tangy and fresh. The Chicken and Rice soup was good, but could have used a little bit more seasoning. This is compared to the other items, though, so the expectation might have been set too high for this soup. Unlike the Chicken and Rice soup, the Borscht soup was firing up my taste buds with its deep tangy flavor. This dish is vegan, but Oy Vey definitely didn't compromise the flavor due to that classification. And along with the soup came a few pieces of a homemade flatbread that was soft and delicious as well. The Chicken Shawarma was pretty good. Again, the flavor was just a little lacking when compared to some of the other dishes. None of this is enough to take away from my 5-star rating, though. These are just little things that I think could be improved upon. I had the South African sweet potato stew as a side to my Reuben, and wow, was it good. The sweet potato blended perfectly with the mix of spices. This may have been the most flavorful stew I have ever eaten. Now, before I talk about this baklava, I ask you to erase anything you seemingly already know about Greek honey baklava from your mind, because that's not what this is. This baklava was entirely different, and even more scrumptious, in my opinion. Instead of your classic honey topping, this baklava was smothered in a cinnamon sauce. Like I said, a completely different experience, but one that was great in its own way. Last, but definitely not least, we have the latkes. These small, round potato pancakes were also different from the latkes I knew. And again, they were just as good, if not better. They sort of reminded me of fried mashed potatoes. There was also a side of applesauce that came with the order for dipping. The applesauce was also delicious. All in all, our experience at Oy Vey was delectable and filling. Though improvements could be made on some select items, Oy Vey really brings the flavor! So the next time you're in or around Terra Haute, stop by. Your taste buds will be very glad you did!

Horrible! We ordered our wedding cake here and the whole experience was just awful. Gave them a…read morepicture to base the cake on months in advance. They called the week before the wedding asking to send it again as they lost it. Day of the wedding the cake was delivered damaged. So much so that the bottom two layers had to be replaced with Styrofoam and the originals were almost impossible to cut. During our ceremonial cutting of the cake we noticed it was the wrong freaking flavors, imagine those pictures! Our anniversary cake was also damaged to the point that we had to literally throw it in the trash along with the majority of the served cake (wasn't eaten because it was the wrong flavor). Called Ashlee's and was told it was our fault that the flavors were wrong and that they wouldn't refund anything because we threw it away instead of returning it (which was never made clear to us). They are very rude, unprofessional and obviously not very competent. Thank you Ashlee's for ruining one of the most important parts of my wedding reception and charging me a buttloaf of money for it. Please use a different bakery as this one is SO NOT WORTH YOUR TIME OR MONEY!

After receiving one, my husband and I stopped by to discuss how to incorporate her wedding colors into the cake pops and place our order. What rude people! The person working at the counter told us we were not able to speak to the person making our cake pops because they were too busy. We explained that it would be a very quick conversation (less than ten minutes) and then we would be placing an order. After several minutes of discussion, the bakery owner turned around (after standing there and hearing the whole conversation) and told us that she was extremely busy, didn't have time to talk to us even for a few minutes and maybe we should just come back another time. I guess I don't know of too many businesses who are too busy to even let you place an order. This is probably the most unprofessional business in the area! Order from anywhere else but here

Meijer (which I do not have in Las Vegas where I actually live) in my head is way better than Walmart and Kroger, but not as good as a boutique grocery spot like Baeslers or the health driven option of Fresh Thyme. This location is horribly convenient where highway IN46 and I-7O converge. Like the casino that is being built right here as well, often it can be about location location location. Having been in this store a few times over the years, I always find it clean, bright and open, football field size massive, well stocked and always organized with a good welcoming feel. It always is never horribly busy to me compared to Walmart, which is a negative for Meijer but a positive for me. I can always find the produce I am looking for in their abundant produce section and it is pretty good quality. We have had luck with the prepackaged salmon at the meat case. Conveniently located. Pretty well stocked every time I visit. Clean. I do return and will continue to do so when back in Terre Haute.

There used to be several varieties, but now there are none to be found and no place for it on the shelves.. And the nonalcoholic section is all mixers some that actually contain alcohol!! And the section of nonalcoholic spirits and wines have been reduced by half! Is not being an alcoholic to woke now or what???
