After a quick stop at the DMV to register my son's 2013 Mercedes, we set out to find a facility for a smog test. I didn't realize we needed a STAR station and initially went to a mechanic I've trusted for four years. After about 30 minutes of trying, he realized he couldn't perform the smog test. My girlfriend suggested heading to a place on 6th and Spring, saying she'd been there before. We drove over, and after a short wait, we met Matt, who was busy with another customer. When he greeted us, he explained there were two cars ahead, so we decided to wait. The total time spent was about 40 minutes, and Matt was fantastic--personable, knowledgeable, and professional. He answered all my questions about the smog process and took the time to chat when he learned my son was joining the Marines. To my surprise, he offered a military discount as a gesture of gratitude for my son's service, which I thought was awesome. Would I go back? Absolutely! I think I've found my new go-to mechanic. Hopefully, I won't need him often, but I wouldn't hesitate to return. He originally quoted $60 for the smog test but knocked off $10 with the discount. Ok, we all have a mechanic we trust when at home. But in this case we are from out of town, now what do you do? After asking Paso locals, we decided to call Spring Street Auto. As I understand it this is a family owned and operated business. In talking with them (Friday morning) they were up front that they could work on, but might not be able to get all fixed by the time they closed (parts, other jobs, all played a part of not getting finished). In that case, it wouldn't be until the next week before we could get truck back (closed on weekends). Note, we were leaving the next day to head back home. After talking to them I felt comfortable having vehicle towed over. Felt even more comfortable in the case the truck would need to be stored until I could get back to Paso. Upon meeting them in person (the daughter - receptionist, her husband - mechanic, dad wasn't around). I really felt they would do all they could to get us handled. At about 15 minutes before they closed, they called and said truck is ready. We hustled over and picked up the truck. I felt they went above and beyond, giving me great service by under committing and over delivering. Based on searches of cost for a repair like this, they were right on the average cost. They were great. The owner answered the phone when I called to see if they were a star inspection station. She told us to drive out to Shandon and back at 55 mph to reset the sensors, since the can had been inoperative for two months. Then they checked the reading. When they were sure it should test appropriately, they did the test. It passed. They were so helpful. I can recommend the shop without hesitation. read more

Me and my husband took his truck in this evening to go get a Star Smog done. The guy working said he couldn't do it Bc the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WASN'T ON. And that if he did do it he would fail it. First of all last year we took it to the smog place in slo and he didn't need the check engine light on.... This guy was so rude, and told us that "He was just trying to save us 100 bucks Bc we didn't look like we had much money" No sir we don't have money, we're actually broke but were coming here for this service that WILL get paid for one way or another Bc it NEEDS TO BE DONE TODAY, and you LIED and what you said was Extremely uncalled for. My husband has taken his car in several times to be fixed. Ron is not at all friendly, in fact he's rude, and doesn't even call to let him know how long he's going to have the car. This last time he told my husband to drop off the car Monday, he never called so my husband had to call him, he finally got the car done Friday! We definitely will not be using him again. read more

Great folks here. My truck was stranded while I was visiting friends in Paso, and I had to have Ron and Matt put a new head in my Ranger. With parts delays things took a super long time and they were very patient and friendly about the whole deal, and helping me schedule time to come back to pick it up. They tested the fix very thoroughly to be sure I could travel back and pick it up; unfortunately I had a minor complication but they sprang back into action and made sure I would be on my way the next day. have to say, I am so disappointed that I was treated as I was. I dropped off my 1998 Lexus and told they would call me upon completion. There was no call and I showed up 20 minutes after the quoted time to check in. The owner was obviously having a difficult and stressful day, as I could tell my his expressions and short temper. He snapped at me that my car was done and had been done. Proceeded to charge me $80 for my smog check. I gave him my card. As he was running it he notified me "Your car didn't pass smog". Wish I'd read reviews. I was shocked I still had to pay full price and that he didn't even tell me until after I was charged. He told me they were not responsible if it passed or failed and I'd be charged $20 less next time. I asked what I had to do to get it to pass and he vaguely told me to drive it 20 minutes one way and back at 55 miles an hour and try again. I need to go get it done again and I'm already out $80. Other places I've called since charge only $50 and $40 if it doesn't pass. read more

Maybe you're last resort , or like me no choice close to Dmv he's licensed and thought it be quick, Ron is a asshole , he treated me like crap I was trying to be friendly but he was showing my broken brake shoe and I went to grab my drink out of the truck and as I was walking out he said Get out of my shop, then he told me he didn't want me around and to wait under a tree next to him I walked by and saw them having lunch while I was being charged 105 per hr never saw the other brake never saw any work done was there wondering paso for six hours my bill was 882.47 for 2 drums and shoes for the rear $406 for parts I called auto parts stores. 3 of them the highest price 86 each drum and 48 for both sets of shoes or. On line $128.95 from a-1 auto RUDE! THIEF I FEEL SORRY FOR HIS EMPLOYE HIS SON IN LAW should have kept the drums oh he said they have been turned too many times I have had the truck since 03 never turned nada ! Worst experience for simple smog test I have ever had. Because I was moving here from Orange County CA..the DMV notice had my previous address on it. I have been a mechanic and technician for over 40 years and needed to move and give up my home to get closer to my family who live in the vicinity. When I went to get my truck smoged..the owner of this place noticed my previous address on the dmv notice and considered me a non resident, liberal, socialist that needed to be overcharged for my smog test. I was polite and tried to be non political during the time I was trying to chat with him about British cars and racing which I have had an affinity with all my born life. The way he acted showed me a reason to never do business with them again. I do not appreciate anyone making a on the spot judgement about my political affiliation or preferences based on where I used to live. I am a proud to be a conserved and liberal person that think for myself. I never came here to tell you how to live, but now I can sure say I will not recommend you shop to anyone. I LIVE HERE NOW. Since visiting your dive I have found a true shop with Christian values that align with mine. Seek brotherhood and not political judgement based on your previous address.
