Stayed at this hotel for a weekend while in town for a basketball tournament. Checking in was super easy. The reception area was bright and inviting. But once you leave that area and go down the hallway to the rooms, it's a different feel. The hallways are dark. Our room was fine. We got a two queen bed room which also had a pull out coach. It was spacious for us. The room itself needed lots of updates. The wallpaper was starting to peel, the bedroom half of the room was very dark, random light switch that didn't turn anything on or off. Plus sides - person at reception was very friendly both evenings. And location is great! Would I stay there again? It depends. If there was another hotel in the same area around the same price, I'd probably try the other hotel. If this was a lot less expensive, then I'd be okay staying here again. read more

From the beginning of my stay, the experience was disappointing. I stayed at this hotel for several days, and at no point was my room cleaned or my trash emptied. For the price paid, basic housekeeping services should be a standard expectation, not something guests have to request or go without. What made the experience even more frustrating was the complete lack of housekeeping throughout my stay and the poor customer service at the end. My room remained untouched for days, trash accumulated, and there was no indication that anyone planned to service it. When my flight was delayed, I asked whether the hotel could accommodate me for a little longer. Despite having failed to provide even the most basic housekeeping services during my stay, there was no flexibility and no effort to assist. I understand that hotels have policies, but hospitality is about taking care of guests. The combination of neglecting housekeeping entirely and then refusing to work with a guest facing unexpected travel issues left an extremely poor impression. I left feeling like my business was appreciated only until checkout time. Overall, I cannot recommend this hotel based on my experience. Better housekeeping standards and more attentive customer service would go a long way toward improving the guest experience. read more

The king suite was really nice and clean. The bed was really comfortable. Tom was such an amazing front desk clerk. I was impressed how well he handled a "Karen" situation. The day we were there, there was a few teams staying over. At first I worried it would be loud and we wouldn't get any rest but Tom gave us a room on the 4th floor and it was nice and quiet. The breakfast was delish both mornings, the ladies did a really great job with as busy as it was to keep the warmers loaded. Ive noticed recently some of the Marriotts are getting cheap with their breakfast and even removing the french vanilla creamers as an option to save money so it was nice to see that had several different options here for my coffee! They always had ice cold water for you to get a cup or refill your water bottle. This was very much appreciated. read more

Stayed here for a few nights for our annual Christmas getaway. It had all the amenities we needed; dog friendly, pool and hot tub, breakfast, and close to Jordan Creek Mall. We also opted for a larger room so we could have a separate sitting area from the beds. It was perfect and made for a nice getaway. read more

Opening in 2011, this hotel is from what I like to call Springhill's weaker period, this hotel has since been renovated to match the current brand standard, and while they pulled it off better than most, there were still a couple of things they missed, but nothing too bad. Exterior/Parking/Curb Appeal/Location: The outside of the hotel was not really changed from the renovation, but it still looks quite nice and is well kept, even from a distance. The parking lot is in good shape and well lit, though while plenty of doors are present, the key reader on one is broken. The location is also convenient with several restaurants and convenience stores nearby, as well as easy interstate access. The wonderful Jordan Creek is only a couple of minutes away too. Interior Common Areas: The lobby was nice, as were the business and fitness centers, I did not check out the pool. The free breakfast was pretty solid, though the lack of waffles was somewhat disappointing. The hallways and elevator were kept clean throughout my stay. Staff: Everyone I interacted with was very nice, no complaints here. The Room: -Security: They weirdly didn't upgrade to RFID, but the magnetic lock and deadbolt, as well as the latch lock all worked. The biggest issue here was the lack of a fire map in the room. -Cleanliness: Everything was about as clean as the housekeepers could've gotten it, but the carpet was in need of a deep cleaning. Also, the bathroom floor had some set in stains on it that looked like footprints. -Overall Layout: Upon entering the room, you'll find a spacious living room with a comfy sofa, a large desk, a chest of drawers, a TV, and a wet bar area. It housed a mini fridge, microwave, ice bucket, coffee supplies, and cups. This part of the room was well lit and lacked issues. Moving on is a sink with good space and a well lit mirror, and the rest of the bathroom right across from it. It was spacious for how it was laid out and had a nice tub shower and toilet, though the lack of lotion was disappointing. Beyond this were two queen beds, more drawers, outlets, USB ports, a TV, and closet. Again, this was clean, but a little bit more worn than the rest of the room. The HVAC and view was fine. Summary: This is a nice hotel, though the minor maintenance, security, and cleanliness issues are concerning enough for me to take a star away. read more

I was very disappointed not to get a survey sent to me by Marriott. I am a lifetime platinum and Titanium Elite member. Perhaps that is why I did not get a chance to review on Marriot's site? I normally do get asked to review the properties, and I have a good feel for what a particular brand should resemble because of my frequent stays. We like the Springhill Suites (SS) layout for our large family. This hotel met the needed space, but I'm sorry to say, was not up to the Springhill Suites new and clean feel we are accustomed to. First, this must have been a different hotel and not originally a SS considering the layout, which is fine, IF it was updated and clean. The sink outside the bathroom was a nice plus. The renovations were shoddy. Very low budget workmanship: previously leaking ceiling evident, poor painting, wall paper peeling, old furniture feel, and cheap fixtures. Not the feel you get from the online pics or what you expect from a SS. Main beds were comfortable. Couch pillow had blood looking stains on it. staff was good (business like to very friendly). Breakfast was decent, but nothing special. Pool and hot tub were very functional and very clean. Really enjoyed using them. Hotel feels more like a Hotel 6 or maybe Super 8, but is lacking for a Marriott property, especially considering prices charged. I have stayed in better hotels in the Des Moines area and do not plan on staying here again. read more

We are traveling across the US. We specifically look for hotels with high cleanliness scores and also for windows that can be open a couple of inches. The Bonvoy app specifically states that the windows could be open, but when we arrived there were no screens on the windows and the checkin clerk said none of the windows opened. Cleanliness was OK, but not excellent. The hotel was very dated and didn't live up to the standard of other SpringHill Suites we've stayed in. This hotel is not standard for most Marriotts. It has clearly been renovated at one time but the rooms and hallways smell like cigarette smoke. They do their best to have room deodorizers in the lobby but the hotel still smells awful. The one elevator they have is so slow. We waited almost 5 minutes for the elevator on our way out. The rooms are old and the paint on the baseboards and doors could use some love. Not just repainting over existing paint chips because it looks terrible. The a/c is old and still runs on the vents by the window and because it literally ran almost non-stop, I woke with a terrible head cold. The bathrooms smell like piss. The only positives I have are the location wasn't too bad, the staff were friendly and the beds were acceptable. I would NOT recommend this hotel. Check around for better deals or pay more for a better hotel. I know I will next time! read more

This place is not as they say!!!!! What a disappointment! Has an exceptionally clean review. That is a lie. It's gross! Dirty carpet. Dirty bathroom. Dirty couch. Advertising free hot breakfast. Also a lie! They hand you a bag with yogurt and sealed in plastic hard egg. Gross!!! I had to buy coffee in the little market by the front door. Seemed to be an effort for the front desk rep to charge it on my room. She didn't want to be bothered. I called down to see when the pool closed and front desk was rude! Not happy. Staff is extremely kind and helpful. The room was clean (although the bathroom had one strand of hair clearly visible on the shower bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Those bottles are attached to the shower wall). It's been a nice location and relatively quiet room considering how close we have been to an outdoor exit. Our only minor frustrations have been that there weren't outlets easily accessible on both sides of the bed (we had a queen size with tables on either side) and that the AC was not keeping the room as cool as our preference. The AC is not a digital one and only has options for low fan/high fan, low heat/high heat, low cool/high cool, and an additional dial that turns towards either a red side (heat) or blue side (cool). Neither of us felt cool on any of the cool settings. My guess is for people who prefer 75 degree or above temp indoors it would be fine. We mitigated the uncomfortableness by using small travel bedside fans. I feel like we paid more than we should have for the lack of comfortable room temperature. The little minor things do tend to add up especially when you pay over $100 a night. However because of the location and friendly helpful staff the hotel room served us well. read more

We were warmly greeted with waters and cheez-it's upon arrival. This hotel looks like it was recently renovated but not all portions of the hotel. The room was nice, but an extremely firm bed. The jacuzzi was also great to relax in at the end of the day but some other parts of the pool area are not so great. The ceiling fans are on their last leg and the one over the jacuzzi is about to fall over. Great spacious pool area with nice towels. The breakfast starts at 6:30am bug I had to leave for work at 6am. They do have fresh apples and bananas in the workout room so that worked as a grab and go breakfast due to my time crunch. read more

Very friendly, courteous, helpful and reliable service here. Rooms are spaceous, comfortable and very clean. On Monday to Thursday, they have a fun welcome hour, kind of like a happy hour where they provide light beer and wine. Parking lot fills up after dinner time. The free breakfast buffet isn't that great (scrambled eggs looks like a gob of yellow; cereals, mills are actually fresh, cold and excellent, oatmeal, assorted fruit and breads. The location is just outside of a major freeway (80) and very close to downtown Des Moines and other areas of interest. Would definitely consider staying here again next time I'm here. read more

Just want to leave a positive experience with the front desk manager Jennifer. I wanted to book a room at this property through a third party, so that I am able to use my points. For whatever reason, it kept telling me that I can only book a room with a king bed vs one with 2 queen beds. I called and spoke with Jennifer who said she has plenty of rooms with 2 queen beds. I explained my situation and she said if I booked through a third party she can't guarantee my request of the two queens. After pleading with her she said she would make an exception for me. I then booked the room online and Jennifer confirmed she made the changes on her end. I thanked her for her help and hung up. Fast forward three hours later, we had a disagreement with our travel companions who did not want to travel to Des Moines. Unfortunately, the reservation is non-refundable. I had the travel agent contacted Jennifer to explain the situation to which she approved the cancelation without any hassle nor a penalty. I just want to thank Jennifer for the pleasant experience with this property, even without an actual stay here. I am regretting not being able to stay here but I trust she's a great asset to the company. Thank you Jennifer! read more

I've stayed in numerous SpringHill Suites across the Midwest, and this is probably my least favorite ones. Check-in was pretty standard, but the flow of the lobby left something to be desired. When I got to my room, I was pretty psyched to see a flat panel TV. One of the best things about SpringHill Suites is that the TV is placed in the middle of the room and not in some bulky cabinet, so you can point it at the bed, couch or desk. Unfortunately for these rooms, the wall the desk is on is long and the TV is widescreen, which means you can't possibly see it from the desk. The room also did not feature wireless internet, so I didn't have the option to use my laptop from the couch or bed. The door to the bathroom opens out right in front of the sink and vanity, which is extremely annoying. Most other SHS locations have the door facing the vanity, so the open door hits the wall rather than the sink counter. It was fine for my solo travel, but would have been really annoying if I had my wife with me. The wall around the shower was generally gross looking. The paint/wallpaper was either discolored or peeling at some points. Everything else was pretty standard for this chain of hotels though. It took me a while to figure out how to turn on the ceiling fun, until I happend to see a light switch hidden behind the desk lamp shade. If I ever stay in Des Moines again I would be willing to stay here, but I will likely try some of the neighboring hotels first. read more

Hotel is renovating but there was no interruption in my stay. I enjoyed the fantastic service from the front desk. I was moved to a newly renovated room and loved it. Only bummer was the dryer didn't accept coins so I had to hang my laundry in my room. Fitness center was clean and equipment was well maintained. read more

Just the basics - We stayed here earlier in the year. It was the best deal in the area and the bonus was I think it had been recently remodeled. Our non-smoking room was clean, good sized and the customer service was wonderful; especially after we thought we had lost some items, the staff had them waiting for us at the counter. It's in a good central area in W. Des Moines, close to the interstate and the mall. There's a restaurant on-site if desired as well. I think you can tell the difference in decor and the mattress in the marriott line and the bed, although not horrible, wasn't the best. Other than that, it was okay. I would stay here again if need be. read more

This clean cozy room stayed cool the entire time...fantastic air conditioning.....I enjoyed having my own apartment complete with kitchenette and pull out bed to entertain guests. A land line and business center with free copies and faxes helped me complete several projects and........front desk staff were fun, empathic, intelligent, catering, and easy on the eye. They made sure I got to an appointment on the other side of Des Moines..... Happy Hour kept me full with wine, beer, chili, nachos, soda, weiners, etc. Never needed to go out for dinner......Breakfast included everything from scrambled eggs and bacon to chocolate pancakes with fresh fruit available always. Pool and jacuzzi were so relaxing....often had them to myself or with only one or two others. Will definately stay here again. read more

We had stayed here last year for several days while completing a real estate sale and quite enjoyed it. While in Iowa again this year for a few days, we decided to go back. It could not have been a different experience. Due to a late flight, we had to check in around 12:30 AM. They ended up giving us a handicapped room which is not a bad thing. This room, however, smelled strongly of isopropyl alcohol upon entering which caused us to wonder what, exactly, they needed to disinfect. Upon turning on the bathroom light, we were greeted by a cockroach scampering across the floor. Needless to say, I started checking for bedbugs. Didn't see any so we went to bed. Due to the late arrival, I didn't make it to breakfast until 9:10, only to be told that service ended at 9. This was after we were told the evening before that breakfast was served until 9:30. So....off to Perkins. We left the room at about 1:15 and returned at 5:30 to find our room had not been serviced. The Mgr. brought towels, picked up garbage (and bug), and apologized. We left the room a bit earlier the next day (around 11:00 AM and had a note outside the door saying that we would need to notify the front desk if we wanted our room serviced. Really, Marriott? This place just felt dingy, dirty and the service was certainly not up to Marriott standards, even in a lower end property. The final straw came when they announced they would be turning off the water on our last day at 9:00 a.m. We spent our final 2 nights at the Marriott next door. I even had misgivings about that property but, fortunately, everything there was all that I expect from Marriott, and more. Staff was delightful, food in concierge lounge was fabulous, and the room felt like the most luxurious place I had ever stayed. The previous few days probably affected that last comment about the room! Seriously, for our particular stay, the Marriott was not significantly more expensive for an environment that was worlds apart from the Spring Hill . I strongly recommend passing on the Spring Hill. There are several other properties in the vicinity (besides the lovely Marriott next door) that are probably superior to the S.H. They certainly won't be any worse. read more
