Stayed here just to get away for the weekend. Definitely happy about the room though I would have accepted the smaller one. It had a bar inside the room. Fireplace. Hot tub. 2 tvs. Room was very clean and nice. Saw staff once. Very helpful and efficient. Called for the wifi password but it's unsecured no password required. It worked fine but I prefer the wifi to be secure. Checked out the pool area. Very nice but very steamy. Sauna still closed (looks to be going on for over a year based on prior reviews). Parking was right up front. We were not in the main hotel but the cottage next door (which is way nicer than the main hotel). The only 2 complaints were; our neighbors were loud and played awful music til past 3am.and we had a wasp nest in our room (which we took care of by shutting the window). As I didn't work the next day I didn't care to complain about the neighbors noise. We also missed breakfast be cause we thought it ended at 11am but it ended at 930am. Our baseball team stayed here for a tournament over the holiday weekend. The outside of the hotel looked good minus the fountains not working. The inside reminded me of an older Great Wolf Lodge with its dark, log cabin vibe. The employees I interacted with during our stay were all very friendly and helpful. The room was clean, but I definitely could have used Queen beds instead of double beds. The breakfast buffet tasted good, and was replenished somewhat quickly. Coffee was hard to come by in the weekend with all the people grabbing it randomly. The pool area was humid but expected with the temp outside. The boys had a blast swimming so that area was a hit. Our family stopped her for a little Christmas getaway. This is the 3rd time we've stayed at this hotel and we always enjoy our visit. Very run down. Staff was nice and pleasant. But the rooms, pool, and hot tub areas were all completely run down and in a state of disrepair. Our bathroom door in the bedroom wouldn't shut, the toilet wouldn't flush, the pool area had large chunks broken and missing (my child's foot was cut on the pool), the pool room floor has very large cracks, sauna wasn't even working and was locked, the hallways had cobwebs hanging down from the ceiling, I can go on and on. Bottom line, choose a different hotel. I was able to book a room at the Marriott (which was absolutely a million time better) for only $30 more per night. Well worth the extra money. Hotel was overbooked, one of our rooms had not been cleaned. Another room had used dental flosser in the otherwise empty trash. Our group checked in late (close to 3 am), and had a noon checkout. House keeping not only woke us up early (in spite of Do Not Disturb signs out), but also tried to enter one room twice without knocking. read more

I have stayed at the Stoney Creek previously maybe 5 years ago. I was sadly disappointed at condition of the hotel. The hallway carpets were torn. The room had a cockroach. There was mold in the shower area on the ceiling and a razor blade left on our coffee area. Also many older guests making noise until 3:30 am!! I would not recommend staying in this hotel until the repairs and the monitoring of guests become more important. I'm very Disappointed. read more

We stayed here on the last leg of or road trip before heading home. Staff was friendly. Room had some miscellaneous debris on the floor. The whole place needs to be cleaned/repaired/renovated. If you ask our 7 year old, the pool was great! Not the best place I've stayed. Not the worst. read more

We had a wonderful stay over the Memorial Day Weekend at Stoney Creek. The hotel was situated in Johnston which is a short drive to Ankeny or Des Moines. Beautiful hotel that is stylized in an up north log cabin theme that had a large layout but quaint rooms and common areas. The northern decor was very interesting to look at with mounted animals like moose and bears, dark stained log archways, stained glass lamps, and antiques adorning all of the walls and furniture. The lobby was very beautiful and had a very cozy TV corner that reminded me of something you see at a lake home more than at a hotel. The large coffee corner had coffee (they have their own branded K-cups!) tea, and water on demand throughout the day. Breakfast is served next door and was very good for a hot continental breakfast. Eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, waffles, oatmeal, cereal, toast, fresh fruit, yogurt with granola, and an assortment of muffins and pastries to choose from. You left full and ready for a day of adventure. The rooms layout included a good size mini fridge and microwave.The beds were super comfortable. Sound proofing was pretty good although you did hear people in the hallway from time to time. The pool area was very fun for the kids. They really liked the novelty of an indoor/outdoor pool and liked swimming under the large tree to get to both pools. I really liked that the pool was heated at an adequate temperature. The hot tub was very large and could accomodate a lot of people much to the appreciation of the adults. Tables and chairs were somewhat adequate but it was hard to find something if fully busy. Towels were also in short supply when busy. The location is right off of the highway and right across the street from a AMC Movie Theater, Goodwill, Texas Roadhouse, and other restuarants and shops. All in all a great place to stay when staying in the Des Moines metro area. We will definitely choose this place again if we are in the area. read more

He goes out of his way to make sure you get what you like and if he doesn't have it, gets it pretty damn close!! Food is awesome, we got the garlic parm wings and pepperoni cream cheese pizza! This hotel is VERY close to earning a 5 star review from me. With a few changes, it would easily get there! Great, friendly service. Everything in our room worked, it smells good, and was relatively clean. The jacuzzi tub in our room worked perfectly and the bed was pretty soft for a hotel. They lost a star for a few reasons. There was a bottle of chew and spit outside of our door, and they oddly give you a coffee maker with coffee but no mugs to use with it. The fan in our room made so much noise we couldn't keep it on and have a conversation, and although there is free Wi-Fi, it almost might as well not exist over at the cottages. Keep that in mind if you want to do any streaming or interneting from the rooms over there. Overall though, we really enjoyed our little staycation here and would definitely stay again. read more

This hotel was a nightmare, we could not leave fast enough. Booked for a 6 year olds bday. Kids wanted to swim and were excited about the bunk beds. This is not a clean hotel. Not even the lobby appears clean. Our room smelled musty, like a wet basement. Linens were dingy and stained. We should have left immediately but were trying to be optimistic. Went to the pool. Pool deck was gross. There was standing water on the pool deck area. The water was murky and dirty. Tons of kids at the pool, very few parents to supervise them. A group of boys began throwing deck chairs into the pool. My daughter was hit by a chair being thrown into the pool. We packed up and left. The lady at the front desk was kind, they did not charge us for the room. The online pictures look decent, but don't be deceived. read more

What a fun great place to stay with a Minnesota lodge theme near Des Moines. We had a large group staying for a conference. The rates are very good for the rooms. I paid less than $100/night. The rooms are uber clean and large decorated in lodge theme. The toiletries were upscale. There is a fridge, microwave and coffee maker in the room. The bed seemed a little soft but I slept well all three nights. The rooms are solid and there was no noise It was easy to regulate the temperature. I did find the TV channel selection challenging but ok after a few tries. The comp breakfast offering was ok with good coffee. I particularly liked the fruit and yogurt. I did not try the biscuits but they looked delicious. Eggs were ok. I really like that the breakfast started early at 6 am. The exercise center was inadequate for our large group of health conscious guests. It was clean but there was one treadmill and one elliptical thing. There was also a rather dated weight trainer thing. I elected to jog outside but the surrounding area is poorly lit. The bar is quaint with a friendly tender. There is a limited selection of beverages but everyone seemed to fine something to make them happy. There are no late food options. The staff is friendly but check-in took a long time with only one attendee. There is plenty of parking. There are no restaurants within walking distance but there is a movie theater I would stay again and recommend. . read more

Moose. Though my visit here was quite a while ago, the moose themed everything really stuck with me all this time. Moose. I stopped here for a night on a leg of my road trip back to the Northeast, driving here from Dallas. The drive was long and flat, and at this point I was just looking for a bed. Moose. I did indeed find a bed, but the room basically had a giant moose in it. Not in a bad way, but in one of those it's so noticeable and it is so far from what i'm used to that it's just funny ways. Antlers on the wall. Random bears holding signs. Moose wall light fixtures. Moose lamps. Moose on the room numbers. Moose lamp. Moose on the door wall ceiling floor everywhere. This hotel firms up any uncertainty that you are indeed in the middle of the midwest - wood / barn type feel, dark colors, very appropriately decorated. Moose. My stay here reminded me of that scene in Up In The Air when George Clooney checks into the hotel for his sister's wedding, and is forced to wait in the regular line because he isn't part of their relatively obscure rewards club. Didn't happen to me - but it felt like it could. Easy on / easy off from the highway, and it was close to food - which was promptly brought back to my room for food immediately followed by sleep. Good sleep, good shower, good stay, good staff, good moose. If you are in Iowa, this is isn't just a hotel - this is a Moose experience. read more

We like this chain a lot. The northwoods theme is kitschy in a fun way. This hotel is pretty large, and actually has two buildings. They have a frequent stay program that gives you about a 10% discount. As other reviews have mentioned, the breakfast is pretty good, but it varies from location to location; that being said, I think the Des Moines location may have the best breakfast. They leave a plush animal in each room and my daughter has collected a few - costs an extra twenty if you want to take it home with you. Indoor/outdoor pool is great and usually at a good temperature. It is located next to a big movie complex and there is a nice grocery store across the street/highway. read more

Decently good hotel. You can tell its age around certain areas, but care is certainly taken here, and they want it to feel like a nice home-away-from-home. It feels a bit like a getaway wilderness hotel. For the very-reasonable price, they are good rooms and functional; I'd come back. Pros: -Rooms are very clean with no problems. They include a stuffed animal in your room that you can take home if you want to pay for it. Rooms aren't expansive, but they work just fine. TV worked great too. Rooms also include a refrigerator and Keurig. -FREE BREAKFAST! There is free breakfast in the front lobby area. Huge line for make-your-own waffles, but also include OJ, yogurt, breads, fruits, milk, bagels, and more. Pretty standard breakfast faire, but it was good. -Pool is beyond gorgeous. The entire pool room had a lot of love and care put into it. It all has a "nature" theme to it - the hot tub is surrounded by and elevated by fake rocks and foilage that gives it a more private feel compared to the pool. The pool itself is a joint indoor-outdoor pool. Just swim under the barricade and you'll be in the outdoor area. Pretty huge pool too. -Staff seemed to be friendly. Had no problem answering our questions, checking us in, or checking us out. Felt welcomed. Cons: -If you need to make a lot of business calls or tend to use your phone data, request an upper-level room. We had zero cell phone reception in our lower level room, the game room, the fitness room, OR the pool. Reception came back when we went upstairs to the lobby. -The "game room" is a couple crane-type games and a sad bench with chairs. Won't entertain anyone for long. -Fitness equipment is showing its edges - taped in a couple spots and the cushions are a bit flat. However, everything is still entirely functional - including the cardio equipment. Fitness room included free weights, a bench, machines, a treadmill, and some other cardio items. If you appreciate a clean hotel, STAY AWAY from here! We have been on the road for over two weeks and I made a reservation at Stoney Creek in Johnston, Iowa for our last night before heading home. I reserved a premium suite so we could relax when we arrived and spent more money on a room than I normally would. As soon as we opened the door to the room, I felt like leaving. It smelled so old and dirty. There were wrappers, a sofa bed spring, a child's ring and particles all over. I can tell the "shag" carpet wasn't vacuumed after the last customers left. The walls and under cabinetry are dirty and dusty. The shower has mold. If we didn't have eight hours to drive home, I would have left. This is the most unsanitary hotel room I have ever been in. I feel dirty and smell like musty shag carpet. read more

I booked a suite on Friday night to get some work done and just relax a bit, get away from the everyday stress of life. I was so excited. I paid almost 400 bucks for one night. The whole experience was absolutely awful. The people above me were so loud and absolutely no regard for anyone below them. I get it was the weekend and all, but there's a limit to loudness I believe. It was like world War 3 up there and it went on all night long. Banging , crashing, screaming and it was impossible to relax in the room I spent 400 bucks on. I called and notified the front desk atleast 4 times until i finally gave up. The noise went on all night long. I checked out at 4 am because of was tired and annoyed and still needed to get work done. It was a horrible experience. The general manager refused to reimburse any of my money and didn't even offer a free night to make up for the misery and loss of my hard earned money. I thought he'd atleast do that to satisfy me as a customer who got fucked out of 400 bucks. Very disappointed in this whole experience with stoney creek. In a world of cookie cutter hotels, Stoney Creek Inn is anything but. With heavy beams and dark wood it evokes a hunting/fishing lodge meets Midwestern barn and corn field feel. Bears and moose and pinecones juxtapose with corn cobs and farm implements. A little schizophrenic but they work hard at creating something unique. It's a cute concept although the hotel feels slightly dated. My room was spacious and comfortable and the bathroom had been updated with new tile in the bathtub, a new mirror and light fixture and fresh wall paper. But, the shower head was the smallest I've ever encountered and was definitely not new. It was the size of a 50 cent piece, although water flowed from an even smaller area about the size of a quarter. It definitely needs to be upgraded. I also stopped by a suite where relatives were staying. It came with a fold out sleeper in the living area, huge bedroom, whirlpool spa, a kitchenette and seasonal porch, but old worn out furniture in the living area made it feel dated. A free breakfast had something for everyone: cereal, waffles, biscuits with gravy, bagels, toast, peanut butter, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, whole fruit, coffee, juice and milk. It's all self-service and ends at 10am (9:30 on weekdays), which seems a little early based on what I've experienced at other hotels. But it's a nice amenity that appeals especially to families. The hotel can feel crowded and noisy. It didn't help that they rent conference space for noisy kids birthday parties and other events like fashion shows. There were several such events while I was there and much coming and going from people who weren't guests. Service was always great, although a young lady at the front desk was unable to act on my request for early checkout, made at 9pm the night before. It was easily accommodated the next morning, though. I enjoyed the desktop computers in the lobby for checking my email and Facebook. But, my favorite amenity was the free shuttle from the airport, especially since this isn't an airport hotel. It saved me time and money. Overall, Stoney Creek Inn satisfied. read more

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. Our room was located below the first floor. As soon as we entered the room, we immediately noticed a strong musty odor. I was actually having trouble breathing in the room that night. The carpet even felt damp. I don't know if the musty odor was indicative of a mold problem. Our stay at the hotel was fine. The rooms definitely need updated - carpet is wearing, tile in the bathroom is chipped and separating, and the bathroom smelled funny - maybe stale or moldy? There wasn't anything gross about the room, but it just wasn't that great either. My husband went to the breakfast area and said there was a good selection. I really appreciated the Keurig, microwave and refrigerator being in there. We'll probably choose somewhere else to stay next time unless we hear that it's been renovated. read more

We stayed at Stoney Creek Inn as a part of a group of more than 40 families with kids of all ages. The hotel staff did an excellent job accommodating us and all of our group's needs. The room was comfortable and clean. I couldn't believe how quiet it was in the rooms! I never heard any noise from our neighbors and the hotel was full. I slept well without ear plugs. My only complaint was our room had neither a refrigerator nor a microwave. When we stayed here two years ago we had both, so we came prepared with popcorn and drinks. Others in our group had both...it didn't seem fair since we paid the same rate. Overall we had a great experience and would recommend Stoney Creek Inn to our friends and to other groups looking for a place to gather. read more

I stayed at this hotel while driving through to Denver. It was a random choice and I was so happy that I had come upon this hotel! I knew it was the right choice when I drove up and noticed all of the wood and the cabin like look. The lady at the front desk was very helpful in getting me a room and telling me about the hotel. There is a bar inside the hotel for evening drinks which I did use. They had a good selection of Iowa craft beers. They had minimal food but plenty of suggestions to order out. The pool and hot tub area was fantastic! I enjoyed the cabin like atmosphere in there as well. The pool went inside and outside and the hot tub was big enough for plenty of people to enjoy. I had a king sized room which was very spacious and rustic. I will definitely stay here again on my next road trip! read more

I pulled a table away from the wall to use the electric outlet and found a strangers dirty socks. Also tried to check in and ended up waiting at the front desk for service for about ten or twelve minutes with my arms full of my belongings. Eventually wandered around looking for employees and found one in the bar chatting. I asked for assistance and explained there's five people behind me in line and was informed she was the only member of staff on duty and she was very new. During that interaction there was no greeting/hospitality/apology for my wait. She struggled to find our reservation for a few minutes because she's unfamiliar with the system. When it was found she gave us the key & sent us on our way with a point in the right direction. The rooms are not quiet & I could hear kids/adults screaming in the pool outside my window til 1030 (even tried to drown the noise out with my t.v.). Also the noise from the hallway is disturbing as if anyone makes noise while walking by it sounds as if they're in the room with you (lots of running/screaming children) The room itself has a very nice large comfortable bed. Like sleeping on a cloud. Room could have been cleaned better as there's large black shoe scuffs on the toilet, walls and doors. Dirty socks from previous guests. There's also a strong unforgiving smell in the hallways similar to that of an old apartment building. I feel we paid too much for our experience at the Stoney creek inn and we will not likely return. read more

The theme-ing of the hotel is great, and it's very clean and well kept - but that's where it ends. The beds are small - just larger than a twin. There certainly isn't room for two to sleep comfortably. The halls ways are not air conditioned. You'll be sweating by the time you get to your room. The free breakfast? Gas station quality at best. But not a nice gas station - a really bad one with horrible eggs and bad service. There are a lot of other hotels in the area that are similarly priced that would be a better choice. read more

Nice pool. Poor customer service. I stayed 5 nights and the toilet leaked the entire time. I told the front desk 3 times and it was never repaired. When I made the reservation I informed them it was tax exempt and again upon check in and the front desk clerk said they couldn't do anything about it but charge me then the awesome manager took care of that. Rooms are nice, housekeeping didn't vacuum my room all week and the bathroom floor had small pieces of toilet paper on the floor from before I checked in. It has a nice fridge and microwave and coffee. All in all a very nice quiet place. read more

It's the only hotel that you don't need to bring shampoo and conditioner girls. It's wonderful!!! I was there on business for a month but went home to Dallas for one weekend. I asked The GM if he could hold it for me there so I didn't have to take it back for just 2 days. He not only kept it for me but he upgraded me and let me check out of my room and check into my new room before I left. Gale ( the GM) went above and beyond. I give this hotel a 5 Star Rating!! Locals, if you want to get away for the weekend rent a cottage and you will feel like your in the mountains. They have other locations so check those out as well. Fabulous!!! read more

I stayed there this past weekend. I would like to preface this experience story with the fact I was there to celebrate my engagement with my fiancé. I am also 22 weeks pregnant. I ATTEMPTED to take a bath but the stopper in the tub did not work. We called and they sent us maintenance. Okay that's fine. My issue is the fact they do not have ANY sort of grip or bars in their shower /tub to assist with getting out. NOT only is there no matt on the inside of the tub, there is no sort of rug or slip resistant matt OUTSIDE of the the tub either. SO while getting out of the tub, I slipped and fell. HARD. I have a pinched nerve in my back, a big bruise on my shoulder blade, and pulled muscles. REMINDER: I AM PREGNANT. Their bathrooms are absolutely not safe. I explained to the lady up front what had happened and she said her boss would call me. HAVE YET to get a phone call at all and am honestly considering taking legal actions. I am upset that I paid nearly $200 for a room that I was quoted $130 for online. and on top of that, I got several serious injuries because they have no safety precautions in the rooms bathrooms. I do not recommend and we will NEVER be back. read more

Stayed here for my brother's wedding and for a visit when his first baby (my niece!) was born. Both times we reserved the room with the jacuzzi and fireplace. This isn't your typical jacuzzi either - it could fit 4 people undoubtedly! The fireplace turns on with the flip of a switch, and you can set it on a timer. The beds are super comfortable! They usually leave a cute plush animal on the bed when you check in (this past time was a moose, super cute!). The hotel itself is ridiculously easy to get in and out of - it's right off the freeway, but doesn't seem like it when you're there. Very quiet and rustic feel, which we love! The wedding ceremony and reception both took place in one of their available conference rooms, and it turned out a lot nicer than I had imagined! Low-key and relaxing. The surrounding property is quite beautiful with small areas you can take a stroll, or just sit around with a few friends to chat. There's a movie theater walking distance away. Des Moines is such a cute little city and we truly love visiting. For the amenities you're getting, it's an extremely affordable place. We decided to stay here every time we visit, even if we have to drive to the other side of town! read more

Charming and nice. Quiet. Laid back. Enjoyable despite not being super modern. Had stayed here about five years ago for a cousin's wedding, so when we needed a place to meet a friend between Kansas City and Madison, it came up immediately. Almost didn't because she was concerned about the effect of the moose head on her 4-year-old, but she looked around, and it was the only place that seemed to have a decent value in the area. Pool was a must for our little water babies, and they loved the indoor-outdoor combo, which was reasonably warm compared to many. Lovely, spacious pool area. It's got a nice feel throughout, not like these other sterile, cookie cutter places my wife usually prefers because to her, newer is better and safer. But she enjoyed it despite its quirks. A/C could be better, TV is modest (but at least it's flat screen), closet doesn't exist in the regular rooms. Housekeeping was friendly but a little inconsistent. Rooms are reasonably well maintained - older stuff, but nothing poor. Loved the true freezer with the fridge and micro. Loved the many sets of solid stairs that I felt comfortable bounding up and down instead of waiting for the single elevator. Loved how I never heard any neighbors from inside my room for the three nights I was here, even though I'd see them in the halls. I played guitar in the afternoon and nobody noticed. We had adjoining rooms and never got woken up by the toddler. They didn't have a little necessities shop like man hotels are doing, nor their own food service, save for breakfast (and weekend hangout), but the eggs were real, the milk was cold and the staff was helpful when needed. Tons of restaurants nearby, including a great bbq joint. Grocery is a bit farther away. I wouldn't mind seeing an extra set of drapes so we could sleep in. The dark blinds are not bad but not what I look for in a vacation spot. Fitness center is solid but limited - no balls, one multigym, three cardio, no headphones and they were out of water cups. read more
