I had never been to professional box lacrosse game and it was a wonderfully fun experience. It was also Redneck night which added to the festive atmosphere. The indoor game is hard to describe. There's a lot of fast lacrosse balls flying around, pinpoint passing from stick to stick, a lot of hitting and chipping of opposing players, musical chants when a goal was scored, and goalkeepers who look more like sumo wrestlers as on wonders how anything gets past them into the net. There were only 2 penalties during the game, one for delay of game and another for 2 many men. I was left wondering it is was possible to receive a roughing penalty. I had a great time and I certainly had not seen anything like this before. The National Lacrosse League is small (only 9 teams), so I may have to wait until I visit Calgary, Toronto, Saskatchewan, Colorado, Georgia, Vancouver, Rochester, Buffalo, or New England. But you can bet that I'll be back if my travel schedule allows.

LONGER, WIDER, AND FASTER…read more That's one of the many things that the Canadian Football League has to offer, besides 3 Downs, an interesting kicking game, backfields in motion, lots of passing, last minute scoring, and a bunch of other rules that are different than the NFL. The first game I attended was the Calgary Stampeders vs. the Sacramento Gold Miners at Sac State in what turned out to be a failed CFL attempt to enter the US Market. That game was fast and fun, Doug Flutie was great, and I was hooked. My Canadian friends who follow the CFL are either Calgary or Edmonton fans, of which I have been fortunate to watch good games in each of their Stadiums. The CFL rules require a little study, but it all makes sense within the first few minutes of play. So during a recent Calgary Stampeders home game I attended (vs. the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, led by QB Alex Brink), I was in my element, and properly attired in a Stamps Jersey thanks to my friend Jim. One other key difference between the CFL and NHL is that the Canadian season starts in July and ends in November. I think that's to accommodate the weather that becomes a little more severe later in the season. I particularly remember a September game once that started out on a warm Indian Summer Day. Sometime in the 2nd Quarter, a "Blue Norther" came in, dropped the temperature at least 30 degrees, and then it began to rain. This Iowa Boy had never seen anything like it, and all I wanted was more.

Plus, whenever the Stamps score a touchdown, they ride a horse up and down the field. Why? Because we're Calgary, and that's how we do! His name is Quick Six and he's a boss. If you can, go when Green is in town. Those crazy Saskatchewan folk love their foot ball and the games are a great time. They also wear watermelons on their head. They're from Saskatchewan. The sooner we just accept it and move on, the better off we'll all be.

One interesting part is that when you approach the building, you walk right past the structure of what will clearly be the team's next arena, which looks like a huge and impressive project. The current arena definitely feels older and a bit dated. The food options try to keep things modern, but the building itself has a classic "old barn" feel with simple seating and no cup holders. That said, you can really feel the history inside. The seating is built steeply upward rather than flat, so there really isn't a bad view in the place. It will be sad to see it go, but I'm glad I got to catch a game here before the new arena opens. If you're in the area before it's replaced, it's worth checking out.

The crew at Wapiti were generous in recommendations for our light spinning set up and were able to help me get my permits for fishing for Banff and a day license although my son and I were only catch and release fishing. They sell lead free lures suitable for Banff and gave recommendations for locations along the Bow River in both Banff and Canmore although they have a variety of fly fishing and outdoor paraphernalia. Our first day we got skunked at Banff on the Bow River and snagged but we eventually were able to hook up to trout in Banff in Lake Moraine and along the Bow with new gear on a separate day and different spots along the other pedestrian bridge. Make sure to buy multiple lures if you're spinning cause there are a lot of trees and rocks to get snagged which are the structures that the trout tend to congregate. One thing they might not be able to help you with is FINDING PARKING near certain spots.

My spouse saw a sign advertising that Alberta Gold Chorus was looking for female singers so I went to an open house to check it out. I've always related barbershop to a men's quartet. I was totally shocked to see that this chorus of nearly 20 women was singing four-part, unaccompanied harmony. What the heck?! I was fascinated. They had me and the other visitors participating right away, learning the four parts and how they work together. It was so cool that I had to come back the next week. And then the week after. Before I knew it, I had my vocal range tested, I learned a song, passed a test and became a member within four weeks. Alberta Gold is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, which is a worldwide organization of women singers advancing their musical skills and performing barbershop harmony. Apparently there are about 25,000 members and chapters everywhere. About 600 choruses and 1, 200 or so quartets. I'm now singing as a baritone and through the organization and a weekly chorus rehearsal, am also participating in vocal warmups and lessons. I've always wanted to take singing lessons and couldn't believe that just by being a member, I would learn so much. Way more than I ever could have expected. I used to sing lead in a rock and alternative band and this is completely different as well as way more challenging. However, it has totally improved my vocal skills and singing songs other than barbershop is now much easier. I'm hitting notes I never would have before and I've only been a member for about four months. It's craziness. There currently are women in our region (SK, AB and BC) that have been active members for over 50yrs. Joining this chorus is one of the best decisions I've made in a long time. I wish I would have known about it sooner. I have so much fun and the women couldn't be more friendly and supportive. It's a camaraderie that I haven't even experienced with sports teams. I'm SO excited to sing at the Calgary Stampede! It's an incredible personal challenge and any women would be lucky to have a Sweet Adeline in their life.

The grandstand show after the races was amazing, with a huge stage, live music, dancing, a bike show acrobatics and so much energy. And just when you think it's over, the fireworks light up the sky with music playing in the background. It was perfect. The Stampede Grandstand was renamed GMC Stadium in 2022. It seats 17,000 with space for 8,000 standing room. It annually hosts the rodeo. There were lines to get into this grandstand and lines to purchase food. There were vendors serving beer and food at our seats. Lammie's has a western shop that we walked through on our way inside. We found our seats easily in the grand stand. There were big screens showing the televised events. The seats were narrow & very close together without much legroom. We stood for the national anthem. Chuck wagon race events were explained. We watched the Chuck wagons pulled by 4 horses race around the track to cheers. I learned that Chuckwagon racing is an equestrian rodeo sport where drivers of a chuckwagon are lead by a team of Thoroughbred horses that race around the track. This sport is popular in the Prairie Provinces of Canada, where the World Professional Chuckwagon Association & the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association are the 2 major racing circuits. The most famous chuckwagon race in the world is held annually here at the Calgary Stampede, with a total prize money for the 10 day event toping C$2 million. Major construction, oil, energy, aeronautics ... companies sponsor wagons with advertising rights. The best Indigenous Relay Racing teams take to the track each night at the Calgary Stampede after the Cowboys Rangeland Derby Chuckwagon Races. Ten teams show off their incredible skills, with riders mounted bareback. They race the track at fast speed, then leap off to swap horses before taking off on another lap. There was a children's chuckwagon race, and all kinds of entertainment. Each evening show ended with fireworks.
