Bad experience trying to assess if it's worth making a claim for my portion of our strata insurance deductible. Staff repeatedly provided incorrect information and failed to answer questions. I can't imagine what it would be like dealing with them if it was anything complicated. Agree with other 1 star reviewers -- they're nice when you're buying but not great on the other end. Wendy McCracken below says I have already spoken to other staff. Yes I have, but no-one answered these questions: 1. Why was I repeatedly asked to fill out a proof of loss form, then suddenly didn't have to? 2. I understand other factors go into premium changes. I asked to know how my premiums would be affected by one factor only -- me accepting the amount I'm entitled to for the insurance deductible. That amount is ALREADY SET and won't change when the claim is finalized. So why can't it be calculated before a claim is made? 3. Why did Rahat say the insulation we ADDED (via special levy) we was just "repairs"? If your staff can't correctly interpret basic documents, I'm not confident you could manage a more complicated claim. I'm happy to change my review if these items are addressed. Thanks! read more

This insurance company is efficient in their process from getting quotes to making claims and getting reimbursed. I hate to have to make a claim but due to a water leak in my main, I had no choice but to contact their claims department. I requested for an in house adjuster to assist and they sent Brent Scott over to help. Square One lives up to its mission and objective to help make it effortless for clients especially in times of crisis. I've been with this company since I moved to our home almost 10 years ago and have never looked back. Brent was very professional and very helpful to ease our pain caused by the incident. At first I was happy to get a lower rate of insurance as to what I was paying at TD Insurance $1350 or $112 a month. First they offered $45, then $92, then when I purchased the insurance it went to $1745! I have a single detached home approximately 1400 sq ft valued at $under 200k Square one revalued my home at $455K! When I informed them they made a huge mistake they said it was there policy. I don't even know what that means? So from what they advertise from a single detached house starting at $45 a month to $145 a month I do not recommend this insurance firm! They are a scam! I believe that if anything was to happen and needed to put in a claim they would not pay it! read more

Signing up was easy. Filling out a claim was hard. Their 'investigation' was basically checking the info I provided when I signed up for the insurance. I don't understand why that isn't done BEFORE they start taking your money because you assume you're protected. They found a mistake in my info (I said I live on my own because I have my own lease, but there are other people living in the house. We only share the kitchen). Turns out the cheap solution for them was to void my policy and return the money I paid for the insurance instead of helping me out when I've been a victim of theft. VERY disappointing. THEY COVER NOTHING. Very easy to sign up, cheap prices, but once you file a claim you'll find that nothing is covered. Might as well pour your money down the toilet. They aren't there for their customers. They are there to collect your money. It also took me months to get a clear answer out of the adjuster as he was unresponsive to emails and calls. He even claimed at one point that he'd realized he wasn't receiving incoming calls, even though you have to go through a receptionist and I was leaving voicemails. So disrespectful. He even suggested that I get a contractor out to tear apart my roof to try to find the cause of its disintegration, at my own expense and detriment, and then submit a report to them detailing the issues. That's their job. And when I pointed that out to them, they finally just refused any coverage of anything. I'll lose $40K because of this company. Stay away! read more

Don't let them fool you square one employees are trained to be your friend and most of them are pretty good at it. If you decide to communicate over phone with square one (which I wouldn't recommend but is typically the fastest way to reach them) make 100% sure that you recap the conversation in an email. I guarantee you the writen response square one gives you will be different. I get that this is probably very common among insurance companies but I personally will never get insurance from square one again I would also never recommend them to anyone. If you do decide to go with square one please be careful. Don't expect they have your best interest in mind and do your own research. read more

I just wasted three days trying to apply for insurance with this company and dealing with their ridiculous demands. First, they wanted aerial photos of the house so they could look at the roof. Then they needed to know the exact size of every different part of the house and I had to send them the home inspection report. Then they needed to refer it to someone else. They promised followup calls and emails, none of which ever came. After I updated my quote and had them call me again, they said they couldn't provide coverage because of three small blemishes to the exterior siding. No house, even a new build, is perfect but clearly that's the only kind these guys are interested in. Don't waste your time! read more

**LOSS $20K - BEWARE PEOPLE THE POLICY IS LARGLY PREDICATED ON COVERING NOTHING** Although Square One Insurance prices were enticingly low, the devil is in the fine prints, and when it came to making a claim it's was an absolute NIGHTMARE! I had sold my home, and literally ONE DAY before closing the water pipe burst due to the extreme cold weather in Toronto January 2019. Long story short, the basement flooded. Earlier in the month, I had family over the New Years holiday to helped me move out my belongings as I was on vacation. According to Square One, because I had my belongings remove, (as anyone who SOLD THEIR PROPERTY would) it was now deemed as "VACANT" and THEREFORE NOT COVERED BY THE INSURANCE. How do people move out of their home and still be protected if something happens? This was absolutely ridiculous that they offered zero protection when it really counts. I currently have 4 homes insured with SQUARE ONE and I will take my business else where ASAP. I suggest everyone else to do so immediately before you suffer a $20K loss like me. read more

My condo was destroyed in a fire in 2021, I'm still not home yet. it's been a stressful (close to) 3 years. What wasn't stressful is my dealings with Square One. Everyone from the person who answered my first call to submit my claim to the insurance adjuster were so pleasant to deal with. Jamie Love, my insurance adjuster was a Godsend! You hear such horror stories about insurance companies working against you. I couldn't be happier with how this traumatic event was handled through Square One. Today I called to update/start a new policy because I have moved into a new residence. Insurance adviser Colleen Ferch answered the call and my questions. Yeah, they're 5-star insurance company because they have a cool web page, cheap service, yada yada. They're good on paper but when it comes to claims they do everything in order not to pay. Paying premiums to this company is the same as dumping your money on the streets. One of their agents, K. Cerna, was neither impartial nor honest assessing my latest claim. He disregarded the evidence I sent (emails proving the negligence, carelessness of tenants) and instead made claims that are not based on facts and evidence but based on his biased opinions about the situation. Horrible experience with this company when trying to get a claim. They took over a month to do their assessment and in the end declined my claim. I had a problem with water damage and it occurred two weeks after I had a tennant move in. I hadn't switched the insurance for the additional coverages for a tenant i.e. rent, legal etc.. The damage that occurred is something they cover regardless of the type of insurance you have based on their policy. This was also confirmed by their sales reps. They declined my claim regardless.To make things worse I had to get emergency repairs completed using their approved vender in the invent the insurance would cover who charged me a premium. If they approved it and I hadn't used an approved vender, they would not cover costs for the work done. In the end l get declined and paid a lot more than l would have had I not bothered with calling them for help. I would not recommend them at all.They give you a great story when they onboard you. A lot of reviews here that are positive for customer service and all are negative related to their claims process. Not one positive one. That should tell you all that you need and i regret not doing mu research. They collect your premiums and are nowhere to be found when you need them.I am definitely screwed and it scares me to think where id be if the claim was the value of my house. Scummy company. I purchased a rate, and immediately realized I had made a mistake in the rate plan. I cancelled it within 60 seconds of purchasing it. I asked for a refund, and they held to the "$50 if cancelled within first 12 months". Such a poor practice, and customer service was not helpful in the slightest. Avoid at all costs. Square One, unlike some other companies and brokers, is genuinely interested in working through the questionnaires efficiently and getting to a quotation. It helped a lot that Marco Ho (and the other agent I talked to) listens patiently and attentively, and explains complexities clearly. My situation is indeed a little complicated, partly because I live far from the property being insured, and both the main part of the house and the studio over the garage are rented. I nonetheless manage it well and the renters are great, so I know I am a good risk. Their underwriters could see evidence of the quality of the maintenance in the photos. I've been a loyal Square One customer (tenancy insurance) since moving to Vancouver in 2012. Today I was unceremoniously dumped by the company, and to be honest, it kind of stings! A rep called me to tell me that Square One WON'T be offering renewal to me after eight years. I wasn't sure if I had heard correctly. She didn't want to stick around and explain, but I was able to get her to admit that they want me to find another insurer due to the mounting expense of my claims. Really? See, over the Christmas holidays when our apartment suffered water damage from a neighbor's unit, I called and opened a claim file just in case we needed to incur emergency relocating costs. Instead of making a claim, we decided to rely on friends and family who generously helped us store our belongings and offered us a place to stay over the holidays while the owner had the unit fixed. I figured this was a win for our family and a win for the insurance company too. So our file was closed without a dime claimed. But apparently this incident was so egregious that it warranted dumping a customer who's been a vocal Square One advocate for eight years. Well, clearly I was wrong about Square One and I can only surmise that they are not the same type company they used to be. read more

In order to get a deductible that would actually allow me to have any of my personal effects covered I would have to pay 50% more than what other companies charge...do your research and you will stay away from Square One. read more

I ordered home insurance, but instead, the company made me buy the tenant insurance. When I tried to cancel it the same day, they took a 50$ penalty. The problem is with their website. When you make a quote request, it gets saved and in several months, when you go back to their website asking for a different type of insurance for a different property - it asks you to edit the previous quote, without letting you switch the insurance type. As a result customers now have to pay for their systematic error. Not a good way to treat your customers. Do not recommend this insurance provider to anyone. Samir read more

Just an update Folks. Since posting my one-star review this Company has informed me that they have denied my Claim competetely. I have nothing in writing except the quote from their Contractor and a cash offer from my adjuster. The quote was 20,071.38 and they offered me 9,442.00 to walk away and get rid of me. I called to complain and thats when they decided to leave me out in the cold. I into my sixties and now am trying to complete the work myself. I am so impressed with Square One Insurance for Home Insurance, that I have referred my friends, my sister and even my Mom. For me it is an easy referral because all I have to do is say "do you want to save some money". What make Square One different is that they allow you to break down your insurance policy and only pay for things that you actually have. When I looked at my policy, I was paying for Furs, Stamps & Coins, a Watercraft, Student Property and Sports Collectibles... none of which I own. Square One was able to remove these items and reduce my monthly payment. I think the key is that most other insurance companies do not have the ability to give you an individual policy. Just so happens that my insurance ran out at the end of last month so I contacted Square One over the phone for a couple of quotes. I spoke to Jas who walked me through all my options and thoroughly explained to me the details of the two policies I require. She was direct and quick, and promptly sent me all the details of my policies to review, and pointed out the important areas I should pay attention to.
