Downright amazing deals -- don't get stuck in there if it ever catches on fire though, yikes.

I love this business for their fabrics. I would give them 5 stars for the fabric and vast selections. However, I am giving them 1 star based on their store policy at the Burnsville location. I recently tried to purchase 1 yard of fabric off a piece of fabric that was 1 1/4 yards. I was told they could not cut the fabric and I would need to buy all of it. I asked why? She told me this was the store policy and "We have to leave at least 1 yard of fabric for the next customer to buy. What would the next customer do with only 1/4 yard of fabric?" I said exactly, what am I going to do with a 1/4 yard of fabric that I don't need? So the store was going to charge me for a 1/4 of fabric that I would then throw away. I don't think that is good customer service. It is gouging the customer. The 1/4 yard of fabric would have cost me $1.00. So it would have cost the store even less money to cut that fabric from what I needed and write it off or they could have rolled it up and put it in a bin for $1.00. It wasn't the money, but the principle. How much revenue does this make for the business at the expense of the customer? When I purchase fabric from Joann's or Hobby Lobby they never make their customers pay for the little extra that is left over. I have even had them say they will just leave that extra bit and won't charge the customer for it. I spoke to a very nice young lady at the Brooklyn Park location and she told me this is not the policy at their store, but Burnsville is a smaller store so their policy on cutting fabric may be different. I use to shop at Mill End Textiles in Burnsville when they were open. Mill End was a smaller store than the SR Harris in Burnsville and they did not up charge their customers for small amounts of fabric either. $1.00 is not a large amount of money, but when you multiply that by the amount of customers that are charged extra I am sure it could become a significant amount. I sent an email to the store about this a couple of weeks ago. When I spoke to the store rep she said the person who reviews the emails has been out of the office for two weeks so he has probably not seen my email yet. If I owned a business and someone emailed a complaint to me while I was away. I would expect my staff to give me a heads up about this right away. read more

I was looking forward to visiting this store after reading about it in Threads Magazine. Unfortunately my visit did not live up to expectations.The industrial shelves are stacked so tightly with the fabric bolts is essentially impossible to remove them from the shelves or even view the fabric. The label end of the bolts are displayed, stacked 15-20 bolts per industrial shelf. Most of the rolls of fabric are piled one atop each other so it is impossible to see anything other than the topmost rolls. There are some rolls standing in barrels which are easier to view. My daughter and I were able to find a single yard of fabric for her project. (I had planned on purchasing fabric for 4 separate quilts but bought nothing.) There was no employee available to move bolts or rolls for customers. We took the fabric bolt to the shabby cutting table where other customers informed us we were to cut our own fabric as long as it wasn't silk or over 5 yards. Only one of the 3 measuring sticks was legible. We took our cut fabric with the bolt to the checkout where we were told we were supposed to write the price on an orange sticker and ordered to return to bolt to the shelf where we picked it up. There is no signage to direct this process. We were never even told where the orange stickers are located. Truly what you have is a fabric WAREHOUSE not a fabric shop. I cannot fathom why I would return unless drastic changes are made so buyers can see and access the fabric and appropriate signage is displayed. Yes, they have a ton of fabric, but I was going in for upholstery fabric and most of that was the same stuff over and over again - nothing modern or unique, just blah. I've never seen so much fabric and yet been so disappointed. read more

Horrible experience. Can't find anything. No signs indicating the types of fabrics. The first person to help me was really nice, second person was rude and one of the employee freaked out at another employee infront of several customers. Just seems like a disorganized mess. Really good prices though so I guess that's the kind of experience you get for half price. read more

SR Harris Burnsville. Went there tonight and was not impressed. The customer service was not good, and they over charged me for the remnants I purchased. They were in such a rush to push us out the door, I didn't notice the error until it was too late. I won't go back. read more

I love love love this store. You name it and they have it. They carry the widest selection of fabrics in the area.. As soon as I walk in, my creative visions go into overdrive.. They have name brand designer fabrics which are to die for..PLEASE VISIT THEM!! read more

I was looking for upholstery fabric and was overhwelmed. The piles are huge and deep and I couldn't begin to see 1/10th of the fabrics they carry. Very disorganized. The help was very rude when I asked for help cutting the fabric. The male salesperson said "haven't you used a scissors before"? I have arthritis and cannot cut fabric without alot of pain and difficulty. Overall, very disappointed! read more

I visited SR Harris in search of upholstery fabric today. It was difficult to find an employee on the floor, so my partner and I staked out at the cash register area waiting to find someone for assistance. An older gentleman approached and began to assist a customer checking out, and asked if we needed advice. We replied that we did. He told us not to get married, which we chuckled at and said we knew that, both being divorced. He asked if we were divorce from one another, and said we were divorced from other people but didn't plan on remarrying. He then asked if our ex spouses committed suicide. For which reason escapes me. In my personal history, my father committed suicide and my ex husband had to be admitted to a psychiatric ward after I told him I wanted a divorce. When I told him I only sought advice regarding where the upholstery fabric was, he wasn't listening. The customer he was checking out told me, and his advice was echoed by the associate adjacent to the first employee. In other news, they had a vast selection of fabric at competitive prices. If you're looking for that coupled with poor service and off color jokes in poor taste, this is the place for you. If my case I'd prefer to take my business elsewhere. read more

I love the place! I'm in awe ever time I go there. The hardest part is trying to find the same material the next time. It may be buried or some place else altogether. But the selection!!!! WOW! I do wonder how long some of the items that are at the bottom or 20 ft up, have been there. Also, the have about 20 containers (large plastic garbage containers and boxes) of zippers of various lengths, types, and colors. My OCD must be pretty bad as I wonder how long it would take to sort out just one of the containers. read more

S.R. Harris is the wackiest, most wonderful fabric store and wonder of wonders, it is not in New York City. The first time I came here I was so absolutely overwhelmed I didn't buy anything. The second time I went they had had a fabric avalanche in the back quarter (literally) and the row was cordoned off for recovery. Now they have much better fabric racks but the thrill of a fabric fall down is always lurking. They have quilting fabrics, cottons, linens, stretch fabrics, upholstery fabric, silk, netting, and just about any other kind of fabric you have ever heard of. It is roughly organized into sections but anyone expecting to put a finger on a particular piece is expecting too much; an inventory this large can hardly be cataloged. Sid Harris is a character to meet and I am so glad he came to Minnesota. I purchased a piece of fabric for a child's dress that later won grand champion in the MN State Fair; the quality is excellent. Come to Sid's like you would a garage sale; you never know what you want until you see it. And you will see (and love) a great deal. The barrels of buttons and boxes of zippers and stacks of trims are always a treat as well. I'm just glad Sid's is 45 minutes away or I would have even more fabric than I already do. read more
