On December 9, 1937, Pope Pius XI named the Church of St. John the Baptist as the Cathedral for the new Catholic Diocese of Paterson in northern NJ consisting 3 counties: Passaic, Morris and Sussex. The current St. John's is very much the result of the vision of the church's thirteenth pastor, Very Rev. William McNulty. He engaged P. C. Kiely, a prominent church architect to design a new neo-Gothic church that can seat up to 1,800 people. The cathedral was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The decor is slightly frightening and the acoustics are terrible. The church has been fund raising for seemingly over a decade and has yet to make any changes. So long as the place looks scary, people will not enjoy coming in through those red doors. As far as being a presence in the community, its not, the location does not help, but even when inside the rectory, the employees are rude, and church and rude should never go together. I can thank this church however for baptism into Christian life and motivation to move away from Roman Catholicism and into the accepting arms of the Episcopalian Church.

Heavenly First Reformed Dutch Church of Nyack, New York is a Repository of Faith to be seen!…read more It sits at #18 on the Broadway corner of Hurd Street, with small grassy knolls below the front vestibules. It has an IMMENSE, HUGE stained glass at the front. The land was granted in 1835 by Peter Smith, who at first was also one of 4 elders who presided over the building of the Reformed Church for about 200+ people of the Dutch Reformed Faith. The grounds and Protestant Church were incorporated in 1853. The present visual brick structure was built in 1901, including the bells and tower. It was not hard at the time to build large, majestic skyward reaching architectural builds, as sandstone quarrying and shipping were prevalent in Nyack. Today the Protestant Churches all work together. Nyack has over centuries been a Protestant city. Worship is available Sundays with prayer + music. First Sunday of the month is communion day.

A great day trip especially for family or parish. Most areas could be accessed for wheel chair person except in deeper forested area. Even includes a picnic area. Church is sadly modern but has very interesting etched glass windows about saint and holy folks connected to Salesians. My only complaint is they need a better map- digital or paper to figure out all there is on the grounds. There was a fading map near picnic area which seemed to indicate another rosary garden of sorrowful mysteries but we could not locate it walking or driving.

Hello Church Family!…read more My husband and I visited this church while visiting our friend who attends this church. The sermon by Pastor Jay is so solid. I really felt nourished by both the Word delivered and the music played by one man on a guitar. It was all so wonderful and homey. The congregation is small and so so genuine. They have lunch provided by a member of the congregation directly after service followed by a wonderful bible study around 1pm. The service is at 10:30am. I highly recommend this church! We will certainly be back when we visit our friend! They were so so welcoming and sweet.

The sermons are not your typical topical sermons. They are gospel-focused, teaching through the whole Bible and not skipping around random verses every week. The children's pastor is also so great with the kids; feels like a real family. My kids love going to church every Sunday. I attended a large mega-church for 9 years, but have definitely grown more spiritually at this smaller church. If you are looking for a church where you can really grow spiritually, and be part of a church family and not be ignored, this is the church for you!

It's in the well-prepared homilies which always help us reflect on the readings, but frequently address sensitive and even "hot" issues of the day at the intersection of faith and secular responsibility. This is not easily done and not often attempted in many, even most, Catholic parishes. The lay readers are superbly able and prepared, and Baptisms are sometimes embedded in the Sunday liturgy. That is like a community birthday party. Franciscans are known for creating a welcoming and joyful worship environment, and their efforts pay off here at St. Mary's. The weekly bulletin is an example. It's all good news about the Good News: Pictures of weddings and baptisms, it's Spanish/English for the strong and active Latino population, activities are celebrated in print and in photos - It's a happy place. I know of somebody who'd call this parish a field hospital for the faith-wounded.
