Reviewing churches is definitely a dicey area, because so many people could be offended or forced to relive childhood spiritual trauma. I'm trying to stay away from divisiveness. I want to help local church hoppers. Fairfax Community Church reminds me of a "mocha choco ya ya latte" (as my funny friend S would say). From the parking lot traffic control, to the dome-shaped coffee lounge, to the public text-message screen in the lobby, and even the mostly white families in attendance, I got the feeling we were at Fair Oaks Mall. But instead of a store, I found a snazzy Christian soft rock performance and a suburban dad preacher guy. I was really impressed with the computerized daycare/Sunday school pickup. The website boasts a pizza night - which is honestly something that drew me: free food (regardless if one tithes). The church is affiliated with the Church of God (of Anderson, Indiana), and hosts activities that feature Willow Creek megalo-church's Association. Not to say that God is Left or Right of some theological/political/social divide, but that the people who organize religious activities have certain inevitable biases. I can't figure out where to put this church, but it's probably moderate to conservative, at least compared to me. It was definitely an interesting and entertaining experience. No adult education on Sunday, at least that I could tell. From the website, it seems there are multiple small groups. This is a good place to be an anonymous churchgoer, because it's pretty crowded and there are two contemporary services in a row.

The teaching is biblical, practical, and applicable to everyday life, helping people grow in their relationship with Christ. The leadership models servant-hearted ministry, and it is evident that they care deeply for the congregation. One thing that has especially stood out is the involvement of the pastor's wives in women's events and ministries. Their participation creates a welcoming, family-like atmosphere that feels like home. The church is also prayerful, transparent, and open about financial stewardship, which builds trust and confidence in the leadership. We are grateful to be part of a church family that values biblical truth, authentic relationships, and faithful service.

Dress is casual. You can certainly wear a suit if you want, but the average worshipper here ranges from khakis and a polo to jeans and a t-shirt. In my case, if the weather permits, I'm in shorts and a t-shirt. No matter how you dress, you won't be made to feel out of place, as there's likely someone who is dressed the same. The music is contemporary in nature, and there are no hymnals present. That's not to say that hymns aren't ever sung, but the service definitely is representative of a more modern service. Strong diversity of ages represented, especially since it's a contemporary service. Grandparents on down to kids are in attendance. There's also been a big influx as of recent of families with young children. Different ethnic groups are also well represented given the makeup of the area, which is also nice as so many other churches out there seem so segregated when it comes to Sunday mornings. Military families should feel pretty welcome here. There's a number of active and former service members here. The church isn't affiliated with a particular denomination, and members seem to come from a variety of different church backgrounds. If I had to put a label on it, I would say that it's an evangelical church. To try to draw more parallels doesn't really do Knollwood justice - my advice is to just give it a shot. Everyone involved in the worship service does an excellent job. What I particularly like is the Q&A session at the end of the service. We live in an interactive day and age, and having a church that is interactive is a great thing. In terms of what is taught here, you're not going to find anything wacky -- the message is always grounded in the Bible, delivered in an engaging manner, and with an eye toward helping make it relevant for your daily life. Bottom line, this is an excellent church. Hopefully I've provided enough detail for people to decide if Knollwood is right for a visit, but I'm more than happy to provide more views if there are specifics that I haven't covered.

Today (1/21/24), was the first Sunday service I have been to at this church, I learned the church has been in existence for 11 years but the pastor has been there for 18 months, he is from San Francisco. I will begin with the fact that I have a degree in Biblical Literature. The message began with a reading of Acts 19 that speaks of the riot at Ephesus. I understand that not everyone there is a Bible nut like I am, but I cannot be the only one that sensed a thousand red flags going up in my spirit when the lead pastor made a parallel to the riot at Ephesus and what happened on January 6. First, he inaccurately blamed the riot that happened in Ephesus on Christians when in fact, the scripture teaches that the tradesmen of Ephesus caused it; they were upset their businesses were going under because the people of Ephesus were turning to Christ and were no longer serving the goddess Diana and her image. Second, relating to Jan 6, this pastor must not have seen the bodycam evidence of the police stating it was a setup (I'd paste the link but there is cussing in it), or the police escorting people into the Capitol, or the fact that we now know there were dozens of federal agents dressed as everyday citizens who took part in the riot that day. I personally know a good man who was there protesting peacefully who was just released from prison once the Jan 6 tapes were released and the world saw the lies that were pushed on us for 3 years. I know what happened to him wasn't right and I have the Holy Spirit to guide me in truth and not in lies. To blame the riot of Ephesus or what happened on Jan 6 solely on Christians is deceptive. I tried to hear what he had to say but I cannot and will not sit under anyone who cannot discern a lie from truth, especially when truth is widely available. Whatever he believes, he should have never put that in his sermon, period. And even IF Americans started a riot on Jan 6 why did this pastor blame it on Christians? This is a completely bizarre take. This man has perverted the word of God and now we know his woke political stance. He even gave a disclaimer before showing pictures of Jan 6 saying "this is going to be very disturbing for you to all see." Disgraceful. I feel bad for God having to put up with such nonsense from the pulpit. I know times will get hard and the Lord wants pure vessels to take the wheel of His church, not woke pastors perverting the scriptures. I have not yet spoken with anyone from the congregation to see their viewpoint, but if they follow a man who shares this poison with the family of God, it's not a good sign. It is healthy for Christians to say something, for them to have a righteous anger when it comes to erroneous teachings. We must use our discernment in these last days because it will get worse for the Christians to discern good and evil. I believe this pastor is deceived, even if he has good intentions.

The church is small for the number of parishioners there now. If you are not 10-15 minutes prior, you will be standing in the back. We have been there for 3 years and routinely come 20 minutes early. I love this parish, but I'll admit that I do not like the actual chapel one bit. The design of the church is the most convoluted and confused attempt at 60s era multi-use. Much like the saying 'a camel is a horse designed by committee', it seems everyone on the design group got to choose a shape, material, and architectural style. I've spent many, many hours wondering what in the world they were trying to achieve. After 150+ masses, I haven't the foggiest clue. The horrid church is more than made up by the best clergy I've had the fortune of being with in 25 years of military travel. Each priest has a tone and style that is unique and works well. The sermons are by far the best part of the mass.

One of the best things about Bible Study Fellowship International is that there will always be a class to join as a guest if you are traveling, any where in the world. In just about every major city all over the world there is a BSF class for both men and women. This awesome church happens to be the host facility for a men's Monday evening BSF class for the DC area. The wife and I happened to be there for a wedding. Knowing well in advance that we would be away, I searched online to see where the closest men's class would be for the week we were up there. Cornerstone happens to be just 8 miles from her aunt's house in Arlington where we were staying so it was perfect. I just did my normal weekly lesson where we study verses and answer questions each day and it's the same format. I have found that most of the men's classes meet at the same time and same day all over the country, Monday @ 6:55PM. Makes it easy to remember and I can stick to my normal routine even when I am traveling for work, or in this case on vacation for a friend's wedding. We meet in the main sanctuary (anywhere from 200 to 450 men, depending on the size of the city or area you are in) sing a few songs, say a prayer, then break into smaller discussion groups. All week long we are on our own with the bible and daily questions. In the small groups it gives us a chance to bounce ideas off each other and talk about the tough questions together. A lot of times someone will say something and it just clicks or they might have the same exact answer as you so it's neat to see what the other guys have for their answers. I love visiting random classes because it's a whole new batch of awesome christians that happen to be from all walks of life (doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, you name it). After going through the entire lesson and sharing the different answers we pray for each other then head back to the main sanctuary and meet as a large group again. We usually sing a couple of songs as everyone trickles back in. There are a lot of discussion groups because it's only about 10-15 people per group. The host churches always have a bunch of Sunday school classrooms. Cornerstone's classrooms were nice and the main sanctuary was nice too. Once we all get back to our seats we listen to a lecture about the same material, then on the way out we are given a little packet that usually has about six pages of notes that are about the same material. The last page has our next lesson readings and questions for each day for the coming week. It's a great way to learn. I wish my college classes were this thorough! It's a four step learning process. One, you are own your own during the week, each day, reading scripture, answering questions about each passage. Two, you discuss the questions in a small group sometimes getting personal or very challenging when it comes to application and hearing other personalities answer the same question in a different way. Three, hearing a full blown lecture that kind of feels like a sermon from an educational standpoint from someone that has spent over 20 hours during the week preparing the material, which is all from the same scripture we just did our own and talked about in our small group. Four, you get to read five or six pages of notes on the same passages that are written by scholars with multiple PhD's in theology from the BSF headquarters. After each week's lesson and going through all the steps you really get a better understanding of what you just studied. Each year is focussed on one area. Last year when I came here to Cornerstone, we were studying Genesis. This year we will be studying Matthew. The BSF calendar goes along with a basic school year. It usually starts just after Labor Day and runs through May, usually taking some breaks for holidays but still getting about 30 lessons in. I love BSF and I love traveling and meeting new people. All the men I met that night in Annandale at Cornerstone were really cool and I would recommend this church to anyone that lives in the area. The facility is great and the people are very nice. If you are interested in BSF, check out their website for more info and start studying the history book of life! You won't regret it. Thanks to Cornerstone for being a great host church! I look forward to coming to an actual service one day.
