We were there for a Saturday mass (they have two, 4:30 and 6:30) and the mass was packed. I'd estimate about 800 worshippers. The interior of the church is very beautiful and done in a modern style. Has soaring ceilings and lots of stained glass. The mass itself was traditional. One thing that struck me as odd was that there were no acolytes, only the priest and a reader. Although there is plenty of parking, the sheer number of worshipers means that it's going to be difficult to leave the parking lot and get back out onto bestgate road. Music was good. Communion was carried out under both species.

We spent a lot of time visiting different churches and different denominations and I'm so glad we found a home at Saint Andrew's. The community is open, welcoming, and inclusive. You don't need to be Episcopalian (in fact, I am not), or subscribe to any set of beliefs, or be of any race, creed, sexual orientation, or even dress code in order to participate fully here. The sermons are an important part of the service for me, and St. Andrew's is blessed with preachers that are engaging and thoughtful. Oh, and getting here is easy to boot: fifteen minute walk from the Metro, or plenty of parking.

Enough of my views of church. Now, I discovered a 3rd reason. My childhood Boy Scout troop still is going on strong, over 30 years later. I came back to see how they were doing. Of course no one is still around from my days, but it was nice to see that the spirit is alive and well. I'll come back to see if I can help out at times.

The church gives to the community through the Community Pantry. They build water treatment facilities in Honduras (and they bring back wonderful coffee to share). They house the homeless during the winter when it's frigid. They build homes in West Virginia through Habitat for Humanity. They take care of children by providing them with a wonderful Christmas. CCPC takes care of the community as well as the spiritual needs of it's people!

This church has always rented out it's building to people that have loud parties. Last night at 1:30 a.m., I called the police. There was loud music and strobe lights going. The best thing I can say about the current situation is that thanks to our city counsel representative, Fred Schultz, the police have been very reponsive for the last two years and they will go to the church and quiet them. This church is a terrible neighber.

I find the people in the congregation very friendly, I find their events very friendly and I find the entire focus of the parish to be on the people, having fun and of course on creating/keeping a personal relationship with God. I do not get there very often because I live in downtown DC - but every time I go, I like it more. The priest is very friendly and easy to talk to. He speaks about the Bible in normal terms, using language that is immediately understandable. The events are full of people - normal people who are interested in getting to know new people. There is no stand-offish-ness here that I experienced. I volunteered for one of the Greek Fest dinners and I was taken in with open arms. This past weekend, I went to a craft fair in the hall and I found more of the same. Friendliness, big crowds and the realization that the church community lives in contemporary times, with busy people who have busy schedules and who have lives in a diverse world. I really am happy that I found this church. I look forward to moving out to this area in the next year or so - I will become a regular parishoner at Sts. Constantine & Helen once I live nearby!
