The teachers are awesome, many of them teach at UVA as well. The biggest issue I ran into going to PVCC was the lack of availability of advisors. If you're on a general studies associates path- GOODLUCK getting an appointment with an advisor- I had to schedule an important meeting for a month away. Other advisors wouldn't take me either. I tried to schedule a quick meeting (a service that they offer) but they have not responded to me. Students need to have these resources readily available. I should not have to wait a month to find out if I can graduate or not.

Now that my prerequisites are done, it's just fitting to write a review of my experience at PVCC…read more Being a stay at home mom was great and all, but I wanted to learn something new. I was lucky that I lived close to PVCC and started taking some classes. I didn't really have anything in mind, not even a clear goal, I just missed learning. First step you have to go through: ADMISSIONS. Be very careful who you talk to here. The advisors have a different take on which classes you can take or not. Advice seems to change from person to person. They are there to sell and make money from the classes they offer. I got credit for most of my courses from my previous degree in a science-related field, but one advisor wanted me to take the math placement test and repeat college algebra. One and a half years later, another advisor, said I didn't have to take a math placement test and repeat college algebra since my general, organic and biochemistry subjects were credited at the college. I would have wasted time and money on a class I didn't really have to attend. Thank goodness that sensible advisor was there that day and she signed me up on Statistics I (I got A, btw). In addition, it's better to talk to Advising in person. Emails won't get you anywhere. PROFESSORS: I am totally impressed. I took Anatomy and Physiology I and II here, and my professor was an MD. The Statistics I class professor has a doctorate from UVA. The Lifespan Development (PSY230) professor has very good credentials, but I DO NOT recommend HIM. Do NOT taken this professor's online class (last name starts with R). That psych class was the only B I got. I hate recommending looking up these profs at ratemyprofessor.com, but i totally recommend it now. FACILITY: Cadaver Lab. Great for students who are serious about studying Anatomy. Not all CCs have this kind of lab, so students here are extremely lucky. TESTING CENTER: Smells like the pits. I am very sensitive to smells and I couldn't concentrate from the moldy smell from the carpet. PROGRAMS: It is a Community College, so only A.D.s are offered. Despite that, the programs are very competitive. During my time here, I've seen students compete like it's the Hunger Games (especially ADN hopefuls) because they only have a few seats in this program. It was what I initially wanted to apply to, and it made me sick to my stomach that I would have to do Battle Royale for this. HAPPY ENDING: As I have mentioned, I thought I was going to apply for an associate degree so I could eventually go back in the workforce after my stint as a sahm, but I got accepted to a 16 month Accelerated BSN program some place else. AVOID: I see a lot of MLM recruiting posted on bulletin boards and weekly job posting emails. It's even plastered in most cars parked on campus. Overall, it's a good CC, also affordable. I definitely recommend, especially, for adult learners.

I returned to school to complete the courses required for licensure in Florida. At this stage in my life, that is not common--it is intentional, and it matters. I completed a course through Liberty University and then attempted to enroll in additional required courses. I was denied solely on the basis of the age of my transcript. Not my degree. Not my experience. Not my competency. The age of my transcript. I was told to take introductory and basic courses despite already holding a master's degree in this field and decades of direct clinical experience. That is not about maintaining standards. That is dismissing experience entirely. This is age-based discrimination. What makes this unacceptable is that I had just completed an ethics course at this same institution covering discrimination. Yet when faced with a real situation, they enforced a policy that does exactly that. I reached out multiple times. Same response every time. No consideration. No flexibility. No accountability. An institution that teaches ethics while practicing discrimination has lost its credibility.

Washington and Lee University is a historic campus, and it's worth a visit if you're into southern history. Washington and Lee was founded in 1749 and named after George Washington and Robert E. Lee. At this liberal arts school, you'll want to check out the University Chapel & Museum, where you'll see the 500 seat chapel, the Lee family mausoleum, and Lee's office when he was president of the university from 1865 to 1870. Also check out the Reeves Museum of Ceramics, which houses the 4th largest collection of ceramics in the U.S. I love walking around university campuses when I'm in a new area, and I'm glad I explored this one.

I spent a summer here at a program during high school 20 years ago and absolutely loved it. It's small and cozy and home-y and the small town of Lexington has plenty of shops and restaurants within a 5 minute walk of the school. Visiting this summer I easily found my way around like old times, after 20 years not much has changed. It's still beautiful, I saw a few updates, but essentially felt like I had stepped back in time.

We had a relatively small class, so the pace was just right. I learned a lot about basic survival techniques, and though I had read about many of the techniques before, the school gave me the opportunity to put into practice what I had only read about. Classes are led by Del Hall, whose knowledge about survival and woodsman-ship borders on encyclopedic. I really enjoyed the tracking class and the finding wild edibles class. The food is absolutely delicious and is prepared for you by Del's wife, Lynne, who also helps Del run the school. A variety of snacks and beverages are also available 24/7 and you never go to sleep hungry. A highlight for me was the ice-cold and very fresh unpasteurized pure goat's milk available every morning. I'm not a big milk drinker, but this stuff was elixir! All in all it was a very educational and worthwhile trip. The only thing preventing me from giving the school 5 stars is the strong personality of Del Hall. Although an excellent teacher, he is very much a Type A personality (like me) and there were some minor personality clashes. Also, he is very religious and would go off on metaphysical tangents during class, when all I wanted to learn were the practical aspects. To be fair, Nature Awareness School has removed ALL of the old survival courses from its website, and now seems to be a religious retreat of sorts. I'd return to the school if they brought back their old courses in tracking and edibles, but since I am an atheist, the school no longer offers anything useful to me.
