DO NOT RECOMMEND THE STUDENT MINISTRY!!!…read more Initially, I was excited about attending student life because of the preaching by the lead pastor, and the song selection in student life. I had thought that church would be a safe place to work through a few things that were going on in my life. Instead (with a few exceptions), I got the exact opposite. While most of the leaders I talked to were willing to listen when I told them that I was being bullied at the church, nothing was ever done to prevent the bully from repeating her actions. As a matter of fact, one of my "friends" told me that I should forgive her and allow it, despite the fact that her behavior toward me was downright hurtful (verbally and even physically) and had not stopped. Along that line, when I tried to be open with teachers/leaders for my age group regarding some other difficult points in my life, I was shut down/scolded to the point where I felt uncomfortable even attending my small group. It became clear that the leaders preferred it when we didn't talk about the difficulties we were facing. All that said, I did have several caring youth leaders who were willing to listen. It's just that several were not. Overall, this church does have many kind people in it; in fact, some of the individuals I've met here are the kindest I've ever known, and I wish that I could continue to attend without such awful behavior from some being swept under the rug. But attending this church isn't worth the stress brought on by dealing with handful of horrible adults and youth in student ministry.

Talk about divine intervention. My husband moved to this part of town and we immediately started…read morelooking for a church to go to. When we chose this church and told my mom, she realized that Fr. Joe Kemph (the priest I'd basically grown up with at my church near home) was the pastor of Assumption. Even better, my husband proposed a month later and we made plans to be married here (by Fr. Joe!) We adore Assumption. It's a huge church with a very large (and growing) congregation, but we still feel a sense of community belonging to this church. It's relatively casual (which we really like) and has a wonderfully loving philosophy. No one is standing up at any pulpit telling you why you're going to Hell and when, it's just all about loving thy neighbor and doing your best to live as God intended. Honestly, the main draw back is that they have a policy about people COMPLETELY filling the main sanctuary before they'll open the balcony. But, with a large congregation, they ALWAYS have to open the balcony and yet they still wait until the last possible second (while you're standing there uncomfortably) to open it up. This almost always results in us missing the first few minutes of Mass. Honestly - we could just get there early and get a seat down below like everyone else managed to do, but it's hard getting out of the house on Sunday mornings. That's a very minor point (and obviously not a deal breaker). We were married in this church (in a GORGEOUS and touching ceremony) and our first child will be baptized there this fall. So, if you happen to move to this part of town (or just want to try out a new church) I can't recommend this place more highly.
