Let me start at the beginning. First we were lead downstairs to the sanctuary for a southern style breakfast. Yes, they have their own little kitchen to cook and serve the food. We had eggs, grits, sausage and such. You know, regular Southern Breakfast. It was nice of course, nothing fancy, but just plain nice. After the breakfast we were escorted upstairs to a really brite church, the pews are very well polished and the glass, Oh the glass indeed. with its "not so Tiffany" knock off but beautiful none the less. Yes, the ornate glass was stunning in its own right, not intricate in the least, not so polished as you would see in an older church, but simple and elegant. I was taking photos and wondering, when will they sell these? Oh that's bad to say, but I am living for the beauty it threw across the congregation with the sun shining ever so brightly. I was happy and content just with starring, although I am sure people thought I was nuts using a camera and taking photographs. But as a YELP-er, I must do it for the mass! Anyhow, take it or leave it, the church is beautiful, nothing super spectacular but for me, that wasn't the point. I loved the look and the genuine beauty and the fact that they kept up with it. I did not see myrrh on each one of the miraculous icons, but one icon was visibly emanating myrrh while I was there. How amazing to see this, especially in a world which denies the miraculous! The parishioners also invited us to join them for coffee hour after the Divine Liturgy. They were very kind and a pleasure to speak to; they also gave me palm fronds from their recent celebration of Palm Sunday. When doing research on this church as a potential home for my family and me to attend, though, I was disappointed to read the following on their parish website regarding the Orthodox Church and the Roman Church: "The two churches split in 1054 over the primacy of the pope and other issues, reconciled periodically, then permanently split in 1450. The East kept the icons. Both share apostolic succession and valid sacraments." It would seem that the leadership of this parish has fallen into the pan-heresy of Ecumenism, which strikes at the foundation of the Orthodox faith. To deny the Orthodox Church as the sole inheritor of the Apostolic faith is to deny the very identity of Christ, and it is for this reason that Father Seraphim Rose labels Ecumenism as the chief of all heresies. Despite the beauty of this church and the kindness of its parishioners and the presence of the miraculous within its doors, I am saddened to see that I would not be able to entrust this parish with the spiritual healing of my family.

At first I drove by the place because it looks like a house from the outside. I found it because there were cops sitting at the end of the driveway. The church is quaint and full of religious symbols. The picture in question is part of a panel towards the front-end of the church. That day, they had a priest blessing people with the oil which was nice. People are then free to get close to the picture and look at it. When you're done, you can buy a candle on the way out and they give you a free sample of oil on a cotton swab by request. Overall a pleasant experience. Am I allowed to give them anything less then 5 stars? It's God's house!!!

This was a delightful little Catholic Church in Homer Glen, one that we'll be sure to return to in…read morethe future. While we suspect that this church was originally a Joliet Diocese parish, it is now administered by the Augustinian Friars (OSAs instead of diocesan priests) along with the parish named Our Lady Of Good Counsel (considered a sister parish). In any event, the St. Bernard's parish and ministries were very nice. We were out and about and looking for a Catholic Church Mass one Saturday and happened upon St. Bernard's. It is a smaller church - along the lines of 500 to 600 seating - but one that doesn't lack for service. Since it is just off 143rd Street, you may have to look hard for it. We enjoyed the 4:30 Saturday liturgy, the Pastor who celebrated the Mass (Joe McCormick), and the people we met while we were there. This was a wonderful community that is bent on service rather than pomp and circumstance...we loved it. The physical layout is somewhat like a figure eight - one circle of the figure being the church proper, and the other circle being the common area where parishioners can meet and greet - on the day we were there it was set up to host an Italian Dinner for the parish. All in all this was a nice layout that was more attuned to the parishioners than the religious trimmings. About one mile away (on Parker Road) the parish has a building for the Religious Education classes and the rectory - both of which are planned (hoped) to be consolidated into the main church grounds (via the Goodings Grove school property) in the coming months. Inside the church part, there are no pews - only chairs, no kneelers - padded or otherwise, and the whole feel is that of a community closer to the basics than the trappings of office. It was a nice feeling. While a bit on the small side, this parish community has a lot to look forward to - the least of which is a growing and prosperous community. Recommended.

Pretty cool, isn't it?!? MEMORY LANE /a little history St. Joseph Parish is the only Back of the Yards "Polish Parish" to survive over the years. Two others: Sacred Heart of Jesus (46th St. & Wolcott Ave.) closed June 30, 1990 and St. John of God (52nd St. & Throop) was closed in 1992, then bulldozed in 2011. Although I had never been to Sacred Heart, I have fond memories of both St. Joseph and St. John of God. Fortunately, St. Joseph appears to be doing very well. St. Joseph Parish was formed in 1887 with the assistance of St. Mary of Perpetual Help. What is now St. John Paul II Hall was the original church. The current church opened in 1914. St. Joseph Plaza opened in 2015. St. John Paul II Hall and St. Joseph Child Development Center, which once was St. Joseph's Elementary School, is located at 4800 S. Paulina St. Originally St. Joseph High School, Chavez Upper Grade Center is at 4831 S. Hermitage Avenue This building is now leased to Chicago Public Schools. PARKING There is a parking lot south of Chavez Upper Grade Center, however, it is my understanding that it can only be used on days when the school is not using it. According to the website, there is also parking on Sundays in the Chavez Elementary parking lot at 48th St. and Marshfield Avenue. There is also street parking available. WEBSITE St. Joseph's website was easier to find and to navigate than some other churches. I like that it mentions the church's history. The main alter was paid for, in full, by my grandparents back in the 1920s. They owned a successful butcher shop one block north on 1700 S. Union Ave. Sad to see that the Parish no longer functions. The Diocese claims it had to close due to "demographic changes." Draw your own conclusions.
