I am writing this review for two reasons, first in the hopes of helping someone who is caught off…read moreguard and in a position to make a difficult decision after a loved one dies and to compliment the Greenwood Funeral Home's staff, especially, Krys. Early one Sunday morning, my phone rang, I saw it was from my brother and knew this was the call. "Ray, Mom is gone." We need to know what funeral home to call for the coroner to release her. We decided on Greenwood Funeral Home because my mother's family plot is in Greenwood Cemetery, adjacent to the funeral home. About an hour later two very nice ladies arrived and transported my mother to the Greenwood facility. On Monday morning, we went to our appointment at Greenwood and met Krys. She was kind, compassionate, and also very prepared. She had a set process and questions that helped guide our decisions...from obituary, urn, Mass readings, and many other things you are unable to think about yourself. She walked us next door to the Firemen's Charitable and Benevolent Association (FBCA) where we made the last of my Mom's arrangements. On a desk there was a sticker that said, "My job is empathy." I read it aloud and Krys said, "I have one of those too." We finished at the FBCA and told Krys goodbye. The following Monday, we arrived at Greenwood for my Mom's funeral. Greeting us with a warm, kind smile was Krys. We made it through the day because of her. I will emphatically state, Krys performs her job with empathetic grace and professionalism. I am relieved and glad that she was the funeral director for my Mom's funeral. For my family, Greenwood was definitely the right choice, with Krys as our guide, making this difficult time easier for us to manage.

Even from outside the gates, the rows of above-ground tombs and weathered stonework create the unmistakable atmosphere that New Orleans cemeteries are known for. It remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the neighborhood and adds to the character of the surrounding streets. I hope by my next visit to the city, I'll be able to walk through the cemetery and experience the interior for myself.

Burials began in 1855 but the actual construction did not begin until 1856. As most of New Orleans' tombs are above ground, it is a very popular tourists' attraction, as there are often tour busses parked outside the gate. Before buying a plot here, I'd consider the hours of operation as the gates are "only" open from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM Monday through Saturday, and 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM on Sundays and holidays. These hours can be a little constraining if you work past 4:30 PM. Prior to my dad's passing in Spring 2025, he told us that he wanted to be buried in St. Louis Cemetery 3, as he wanted to close to Bayou St. John, as it brought back fond childhood memories going fishing there. He chose to be cremated, as will my mom one day. They chose a side by side niche for their ashes in the St. Michael the Archangel Cremation Garden, which is a fairly "new" addition to the cemetery. Mrs. Mel Byrd helped us with all the details regarding his final resting place and plaque. There are 2 or 3 mausoleums here as well as countless vaults and above ground gravesites. Even though it's a tourist attraction, most tourists are very respectful when I have been there. Often times, there are no tourists there and it can be very serene. If you are not from New Orleans, this is a good/informative tour outside of the French Quarter.

Remarkable how costly their immortal houses must have been. Very unique, many angels. Befitting of what we saw, Doc put Coco on the tv.

Westlawn is a good example of a local cemetery keeping up with the times. As you proceed and look to the right, you see the area decidated to the New Orleans style above ground family crypts. Closer to the back of the cemetery grounds, you come across the newer areas where the community mausoleums with crypt space for caskets, and cremation niches were built. They are actually quite pretty with the stained glass windows and all. Something for everyone.

For the absolutely unreasonable level scrutiny that one must go through to visit their loved one,…read moreand enduring verbal abuse from who I could only assume was a Maintenance Man, the grounds really are falling into disrepair. There's visible trash on the property, and portions of grass that are dead or dying, and headstones and face plates to crypts having broken or fallen down. For how aggressive the staff is towards visiting family, you think they'd take better care of the place. It really is a shame when such beautiful and historic sites in New Orleans aren't taken care of and that's evident here at Hope Mausoleum. Just a shame.

Originally known as Tememe Derech in 1858, this Jewish cemetery was renamed Gates of Prayer in…read more1939. Currently, it serves the Gates of Prayer, Beth Israel and Chevra Thilim congregations. Entance to the historic cemetery is via cast-iron gates at the cemetery's main entrance on Canal Street. Call in advance to arrange a visit. Graves are arranged in long rows perpendicular to the street. As New Orleans required above ground burials, most of the graves are composed of marble-frame raised beds filled with soil. This satisfies the Jewish tradition that the deceased be buried in the ground while meeting the challenges posed by to New Orleans' high water table. Some tombs are quite ornate with the memorial architecture reflecting the surrounding Catholic cemeteries, yet all the graves face east toward Jerusalem keeping with Jewish tradition. The cemetery is spread throughout the surrounding neighborhood and abuts other cemeteries which leads to very irregular borders and an interesting juxtaposition that highlights the variety of religious burial traditions in the city.

As you likely know, New Orleans floods. This presents a conflict between the requirement to be buried six feet down and the likelihood of water coming along and upsetting the cemetery. The cemetery is not open to the public and our tour did not go inside, but we got here when some others were here and the gate was unlocked. This isn't the above ground tombs that the Catholic ones have, these are in ground. The gate to No 1 was open, but the gate to No 2 was locked. We did walk inside to view names and dates and appreciate the ornate tops on these headstones. It's worth a stop to see another side of the city as well as how a different faith says they need to handle their deceased parishioner's.

Tucked away, just off Elysian Fields Ave, this cemetery does not get as much attention as the ones…read morein the Quarter or the Garden District, but this is one of the best kept cemeteries in the area. Everyone always goes to the big ones, or Metairie Cemetery, which you can see from I-10 on your way into town from the airport. This site was chosen because, according to Jewish custom, the body can not rest unless it is in the ground, and this is high enough to do that. They do have a small mausoleum. There are also burials here from the Jewish community, as this is their dedicated spot. The website https://jewishnola.com/jewish-new-orleans/hebrew-rest-cemetery which gives some useful information. My favorite part is in one of the corners, there is a huge mound where all of the Hebrew texts that were damaged in Hurricane Katrina are buried, also in accordance with their customs. It is about 5 whole city blocks with trees, benches, and room for growth. I really like this particular cemetery because it is so well taken care of, loved, used and maintained. There is plenty of street parking in the area, and being just off the main streets it is nice and quiet. This is one of the most peaceful spots in the city, in my opinion. There is plenty of space in between the graves to walk through and thoroughly appreciate everything, unlike some of the others in the city. I am so glad to point this cemetery out to others to come and enjoy the sight. Come take a look for yourself!
