As you proceed and look to the right, you see the area decidated to the New Orleans style above ground family crypts. Closer to the back of the cemetery grounds, you come across the newer areas where the community mausoleums with crypt space for caskets, and cremation niches were built. They are actually quite pretty with the stained glass windows and all. Something for everyone.

Even from outside the gates, the rows of above-ground tombs and weathered stonework create the unmistakable atmosphere that New Orleans cemeteries are known for. It remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the neighborhood and adds to the character of the surrounding streets. Don't be confused, there is a Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, but that is CLOSED, and is located in the Garden District (near Commander's Palace restaurant). You will need to be in a tour to enter, but I did it on the cheap. If you walk the perimeter, you can view the grounds from the iron gates built into the block walls. I stuck my phone in and took some nice photos. At the entrance, I peeked in and was able to see the Nicholas Cage pyramid crypt.
