It's an engaging, welcoming, open, progressive place actively committed to social justice, with room for everyone to get involved or just enjoy fellowship. Its pastor, Charlie Parker, leads with just the right combination of intellect, warmth, and humor - in his sermons and in person - while choir director Bruce Caviness brings jaw-dropping talent to the music program. (Best Easter-Day Widor's Toccata in the city?? I THINK SO.) As the national Methodist church, it was the regular place of worship for presidents Grant and McKinley. (Both of them attended in the old building, which was near the center of the city, but don't worry: the "new" one - finished in 1932 - is still one of the city's most beautiful.) Don't let the fact that Boy Scout Troop 666 meets in the basement fool you (666! Seriously! In a church basement!) - this place does God's good work, and I'm so glad to have grown up in its shadow.

Starting with narration by Erik Dellums, Jackson gave us music to enjour and an evening to remember. Everyone left with a smile, likely resulted from the soaring & beautifully sung notes at the top of the tenor range, the forceful and joyous sound of Patrick Lundy & the Ministers of Music, and the Symphonic Orchestra providing musical depth and lovely sounds to supplement the organ, played by Evelyn Curention, and the piano, played by Alma Sanford. The church is a lovely structure that accommodated hearing every part of the music from every seat. The minister, Charles Parker, was delightful and brief. Jackson, who sings at this church regularly, proved a star in every aspect and I can't wait for Sacred Arias III! Congratulations on this well-attended and well-received program!

Thankfully, a friend's son told me about WIC and it has been a blessing. It has a small congregation, about 80 people, but very close, warm and welcoming. The music is good, the preaching/teaching is outstanding, and there's a great mix of age groups, bringing together both life-long Christians and new believers. Getting to the church is easier now that I have a car, but the bus drops you only two blocks away on Wisconsin. Definitely worth checking out if you are new to town or looking for a place to renew you faith.
