As…read moresoon as you cross the St. Croix River into Wisconsin, go about a mile and take a left, heading north, on Soderbeck Road. In a bit less than a mile, you'll reach a 4-way intersection. This is Benson. Take a left on Benson, heading west. At the next intersection, a T, take a right onto Tennessee Road and follow the curving road north and west as it curves down to the river. In about a mile, the road terminates in a gravel parking lot. Walk-in campsites are free, first come, first served and dispersed willy nilly at the top of a hill, reached by climbing stairs. Fire rings, tents sites and a solitary pit toilet are the only amenities. There is no potable water here, no checking in, no hosts, and no answering to The Man. The campground is perched atop a 30 ft limestone cliff. The edge is marked by a sign, but do be careful. The campground has tall pines as well as deciduous trees that turn pretty colors in Fall. Avoid coming on weekends in the summer. Free camping brings party people as well as extra ranger presence. This can be a very nice, quiet place to camp, if you know when to go. Also, avoid coming when I'm there. I really like my space, man. So...just don't harsh my mellow okay? The most desolate time I've been here was in February, 2002. It was the coldest night of the year and we couldn't get a fire going. A blizzard started coming down and after I could no longer feel my feet, I decided to bail. I remember that my Volvo 240 barely made it back up that hill. I gunned it and hoped for the best. I made it, and ended up driving home on a completed deserted I35 going about 15 mph all the way back to St. Paul in a complete whiteout at 2:00 a.m. Another time I organized a writer's retreat and about ten of us came out and had a good time. A really good time. A really, really good time. Not much writing was done, but I nearly lost a limb to a crazed, machete-wielding doctor. Listen doc, all I ask is that if you take my arm off, you put it back the way you found it. You can do that because you're a doctor right? And doctors can fix anything, right? Right? I can personally vouch that the walls of the pit toilet are reinforced to withstand even the most vigorous assault from machete-wielding maniacs who have forgotten their Hippocratic oaths. Once said maniacs have expended their energy, star gazing is another fine activity that also happens to be quite safe, requiring no weapons or alcohol of any kind. Okay, full disclosure: I DID make some provocative, button-pushing statements toward the good doctor, but it was all in good fun, and I thought that she was simply looking for instruction on the safe operation and handling of the machete. God, we did do some appalling things that weekend, like eat raw haggis out of a can atop steaks. Yikes. Oh to be young! Well, I guess we weren't exactly spring chickens then either... But I digress... Sandrock Cliffs is considered part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, and as such it is managed by the National Park Service, and patrolled by federal rangers, so naughty behavior here can get you in some gnarly shit, man. And let me tell you, you think nobody is around for miles, and BAM! There's a friggin' ranger standing in your camp with her hands on her hips like a disapproving, silent green ninja. I mean, where the hell did she come from anyway, man? I never heard an engine. Maybe she canoed in and scaled the cliff with a rope and a grappling hook. Instead of throwing stars, she'll cut you down with throwing clam shells, and then write you a ticket on the back of a leaf...that's IF you're lucky. You can get more detailed maps about this and other awesome hidey spots and out of the way places to hike and canoe by making a stop at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway Marshland Visitor Center on the Minnesota side of the St. Croix River off of highway 70, just before crossing the river. Munchie runs can be made by going to Grantsburg, about a 15 minute drive from the campground, depending on how crazy you drive. Grantsburg has a hospital too. I know, because I cut my knee open on a clam in the Clam River, and a doc there sewed me up real nice. Not the machete doctor. A different one. A small trail leads down to the St. Croix river to a canoe launch site. When the river is low, you can cross to a heavily wooded island, dense with prickle bushes and mosquitoes. A flat loop trail parallels the edge of the river, beginning at the far southern edge of the campground and proceeding about a mile or two total, including turn-around.

They have lots of great activities including a rubber duck race where the donate 1/2 of the money raised to the local food shelf. Everything was going great until yesterday(Sunday) when I decided to walk around the campground to check out more of the area. I was on the road at the far end of the campground when a campers 4 dogs spotted me and started running and barking aggressively. I stopped to try and give the owners a chance to call them off as well as hopefully deescalate the situation. That is when the German Shepherd came around the back of me and bit my bum. I said ouch. The owner finally got the dogs attention and put him in their camper. I left and went back to my camp site. I saw the skin was broken and soon I had a large bruise. I called the office and asked if the campground owners could please stop by my site as I wanted them aware of what happened. 2 hours later still no contact from them. I then went up to the bar and restaurant and located Merle and Laura. I told the what transpired and only had one request which was to please find out if the dog is up to date on vaccines. They said they would. That was 6 pm last night. I left the campground at 10 am this morning and still have not been contacted. Dogs off leash when so many children are around is an issue. If the campers next to me had encountered this dog with their 1 and 3 year olds I do not think it would have been I so minor. Again loved the campground and activities but disappointed that this issue was not followed up on. Worst part is the dogs belong to a long time seasonal camper at the facility so I'm afraid it won't be addressed.

It was great they had a pool and splash pad but they didn't open until 10 and while the sign said closed at 8, the online policy you sign said it closed at dusk. We went just after 8 and were told it was closed. We pointed out the policy and was told they had to update the website. It was disappointing and not a great impression. The camping spaces are very close together and for the price to stay in the wagon ($175/night) you have to bring basically everything to cook and stay. Overall it's fine for a little getaway and we live close but I probably won't come back.

There's 15 family members that reside behind no trespassing signs on property. It was advertised as dog friendly which is a fib. Dogs must be on leash eternally. Plus there's 0 exercise area. Now that's real dog friendly. I tried to remedy that problem by offering to put in a fenced area for dogs for FREE, since if I was going to stay there for summer it was necessary for my 2 single year old high energy pups. At first this was fine by Jenny the girl who wears the pants and owns this setup But after driving to Belle plains, mn to get 100 ft of chain link fence off marketplace she changed her mind. I'm also out $120 for fence now on top of the $750. After a slightly heated discussion she gave me 24 hours to get out or cops get called I left within a few hours but never got a refund. She tells me to sue her! That's in the works. I'm 71 yrs old and live on SS exclusively so I desperately need that money but she could care less. She did offer to give me back a part of it but prorated it at weekly rate. A weekly rate was dramatically different than seasonal so I refused it. I also very kindly offered to leave no reviews anywhere if shed refund my money but she said I was attempting to extort her. Not at all, I was merely offering us both an easier way out of this nightmare. I never cost these folks one dime since my motorhome is entirely run on solar so no electricity was used and I never even deposited any trash there during my 1 week stay. She has been successful in getting my 2 previous reviews taken down from this platform so she must be regretting something. I'm only writing true facts that I lived through in this place. I've never in my entire life been treated like this and do not like it. Does this sound like the kind of place you want to stay?

My wife and I have been here since they opened, we were the first to sign on. Every campground we have been to require you to keep your dog on a leash. This is very family safe campground. We see kids riding bikes and playing all the time.

They also have a swimming pool and game room. Bingo on most Saturday nights and all the essentials inside the store. Parks and disc golf course are some other things to do while here. Parking is easy as long as you check in and we love that they offer a discounted rate for an all day golf pass and will rent clubs and pull carts if needed. They also allow golf carts on this course and in the RV park. Lake close by to fish on and you can park your boat.
